Temidayo Adedokun, 31, who was born in Nigeria and now is working in America, became pregnant with her first child. She couldn’t hide her joy, and couldn’t wait to shop for baby clothes with traditional African prints that she grew up wearing.
“I was super surprised that I failed to find affordably priced African aesthetic (美学的) products that were designed from an authentic (正宗的) place,” Temidayo said.
Temidayo decided to take matters into her own hands. At first, she focused on creating clothes just for her baby. But then, she put some of them on a website to see what happened.
The feedback she got gave her just enough confidence. She figured she’d make the baby clothes an after-work side business to her full-time position as a lawyer in Oakland, California, until one day she was told she was given a boot. Once again, she needed to make her own choice. That’s when she decided to make it a full-time job.
“I had to evaluate: am I going to search for another job I don’t have a great desire for?” she said. “Or am I going to take this as a chance I’m not sure about myself? After all, I’m not familiar with this field. What if something unexpected happens? However, for the symbols of children’s clothing in my heart, I threw myself into it. So I chose the latter.” Then, in March 2020, Temidayo officially announced her own brand: Ade+ Ayo.
Since then, Temidayo has received much praise from other African parents informing her that her clothes help them start having conversations with their kids about what they’re wearing and allow them to show their children the treasures handed down by their ancestors. And, for those who aren’t African, her clothes have been a way for parents to introduce their kids to a new and colorful world. “I feel very blessed to be able to be doing this,” she said.
24. How did Temidayo feel after trying to buy African aesthetic clothes?
A. Pleased. B. Confident. C. Stressful. D. Disappointed.
25. What does the underlined phrase “given a boot” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. fired. B. allowed. C. informed. D. accused.
26. What did Temidayo originally think of her creating her own brand?
A. It was informal. B. It was profitable. C. It was risky. D. It was trendy.
27. How can we evaluate Ade+ Ayo?
A. It’s created African aesthetics. B. It’s spread authentic cultures.
C. It’s targeted overseas Africans. D. It’s inspired people’s creativity.

There is such a thing as a free lunch, it turns out, as long as you don’t mind too much what it is. Tamara Wilson found hers a few streets away from her west London home — and as well as picking up some unwanted bread and fruit that would otherwise be thrown away, she made a new friend.
Wilson is one of 3.4 million people around the world using an app designed to encourage people to give away rather than throw away surplus (剩余) food. “It’s such a small thing, but it makes me feel good and my neighbour feel good. And a lot of small acts can end up making a big difference,” she said.
The last few years have seen an explosion in creative ways to tackle food waste by linking supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and individual households to local communities. Olio, the app used by Wilson, saw a fivefold increase in listings during 2022, and the signs are that this rapid growth is continuing into 2023, said Tessa Clarke, its CEO and co-founder.
About a third of all food produced globally is wasted, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Almost 1.4 billion hectares of land — close to 30% of the world’s agricultural land — is dedicated to producing food that is never eaten, and the carbon footprint of food wastage makes it the third contributor of CO2. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways of tackling the global climate crisis.
Olio, Clarke said, was an attempt to change this on a small, local scale. “The app connects people with others who have surplus food but don’t have anyone to give it to because so many people are disconnected from their communities.” Users of Olio post images of surplus food that others in the neighbourhood might want. Olio also has a network of 24,000 volunteers who collect surplus food from local supermarkets and stores for app users to claim.
Despite the success of the app, it was hard to make a difference to the huge scale of food waste, Clarke added. “Even though we’re doing well, we’ve only scratched the surface (触及表面). But if everyone makes small changes in the world, we’d dramatically reduce the amount of food that ends up in bins (垃圾桶).”
28. What does the author want to show by telling Wilson’s story?
A. People tend to use apps to order food. B. People prefer to make friends on apps.
C. People find a high-tech fix to food waste. D. People show more concern for each other.
29. What’s the consequence of food waste according to the text?
A. Global warming. B. Loss of land. C. World hunger. D. Poverty and inequality.
30. What does Olio do to help tackle food waste?
A. It sells surplus food to those in need. B. It allows volunteers to stay connected.
C. It provides a platform for people to promote food. D. It fills the information gap between green communities.
31. What does Clarke think of the work on reducing food waste globally?
A. It is a great success. B. It requires joint efforts.
C. It is beyond human power. D. It has won public support.
D
Teaching middle-school children about climate change may be one of the most important things we can do to save the planet. It’s those kids who have the most potential, according to a new study
It’s at this developmental age that students can master complex concepts like climate change and remain open to new ideas, the researchers say.Middle school is usually when we start to figure out how we really feel about the world and to form our own opinions.
The researchers carried out an experiment with students in North Carolina. They gave specialized climate change training to middle school teachers, sharing lessons that would specifically encourage the kids to interact with their parents and talk about the topic.Research has shown that lessons on climate change that have the most impact typically frame the topic around something you can often see or experience,so.the lessons were focused on these themes, such as how the environment relates to animals or how an individual can directly affect the environment.
The researchers divided the students into two groups:a control group that didn’t get the specialized lessons and an experiment group who did. They also surveyed parents before, during and after the program, following these groups for two years.
After the program, the 357 students who got the special lessons and their parents showed a larger change in their level of concern about climate change than the 224 students who did not get the training. The 357 kids, the study found, can best reach adults and encourage them to act to fight climate change, regardless of their parents’ political beliefs. In fact, the researchers found this method has the greatest impact on the people who are otherwise hardest to convince:conservative (保守的) males.
“Ireally think it is very timely and really speaks to the fact that we have to prepare kids for climate change,”said study author Danielle Lawson.“Immediate action is key.We have about 12 years to take action together to keep the global average temperature from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.Beyond that critical point, climate change will have done permanent damage.”
32. Why do middle schoolers have the most potential?
A. They are free from wrong ideas.
B. They like to deal with complexity.
C. They are interested in the outside world.
D. They are at an age to form their own views.
33. How can we describe the lesson topic?
A. Challenging. B. Familiar. C. Charming D. Limited.
34. What did the study find?
A. People’s political beliefs are hard to change.
B. The 357 kids are good at communication skills.
C. Kids receiving the lessons influence their parents more.
D. No method but this one can convince conservative males.
35. What can be inferred from Danielle Lawson?
A. We have enough time to take action.
B. It’s urgent to deal with climate change
C. The kids can solve the future climate challenge
D. We can do nothing about global warming after 2034.

We used to live in a small village. While all of the villagers were quite poor, my family was relatively better off. My mother would bring over whatever food we could spare to our neighbors.
The Lim family, who ran a bicycle shop just opposite our house, was the poorest one. It was hard for Lim to feed his twelve growing children daily. It became even harder when the economy was doing very badly in the 1930’s. For many people, three meals a day was a luxury, let alone buying a new bicycle. Even my family had to make ends meet with two meals a day.
One day, I noticed my mother seemed very troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. There and then, she decided to sacrifice part of our meals for the family. Despite my protest that we too were hungry, she kept on doing the kind act from then on. Fortunately, the troubled situation did not last long, and the children in our family returned to our three meals a day again.
As time went on, I noticed that Mr Lim grew cheerful, too. The number of customers at his shop kept increasing. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as bicycles were very useful and popular for transport then.
However, it was at this time that my father’s business took a turn for the worse. My father was a grocery owner and he trusted people readily. One day, his senior assistant ran off with almost all the shop’s earnings. My father had to make up for the loss.
During that time, his health was also worsening. One night, my father suddenly fainted (晕厥). My mother tried several times to wake him up but failed. We children were all frightened and cried loudly.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Hearing our cries, Mr Lim rushed to help.

D 25. A 26. C 27. B
根据第二段“I was super surprised that I failed to find affordably priced African aesthetic (美学的) products that were designed from an authentic (正宗的) place(我非常惊讶,竟然找不到价格实惠且源自真正非洲本土设计的美学产品)”可推知,没能买到价格实惠的非洲美学产品,她感到惊讶,同时也会觉得很失望,故选D。
根据第四段“That’s when she decided to make it a full-time job.(就在那时,她决定把它变成一份全职工作)”可推知,她是在被开除后把卖衣服当做全职工作,因此“given a boot”的意思是“开除”,和fired意思相近,故选A。
根据倒数第二段“After all, I’m not familiar with this field. What if something unexpected happens?(毕竟,我对这个领域并不熟悉。要是出现什么意想不到的情况怎么办?)”可知,Temidayo创建自己的品牌时最初是觉得很有风险的,因为她不熟悉这个领域,故选C。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Since then, Temidayo has received much praise from other African parents informing her that her clothes help them start having conversations with their kids about what they’re wearing and allow them to show their children the treasures handed down by their ancestors. And, for those who aren’t African, her clothes have been a way for parents to introduce their kids to a new and colorful world.(从那以后,特梅迪约受到了其他非洲父母的诸多称赞,他们告诉她,她的服装有助于他们与孩子展开关于穿着的对话,并能让孩子们看到他们祖先留下的珍贵物品。而对于那些非非洲人来说,她的服装也为家长们提供了一个向孩子们介绍一个新奇多彩世界的方式)”可推知,Ade+Ayo这个品牌传播了真正的文化。故选B。

There is such a thing as a free lunch, it turns out, as long as you don’t mind too much what it is. Tamara Wilson found hers a few streets away from her west London home — and as well as picking up some unwanted bread and fruit that would otherwise be thrown away, she made a new friend.
Wilson is one of 3.4 million people around the world using an app designed to encourage people to give away rather than throw away surplus (剩余的) food.
C 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据第二段中“Wilson is one of 3.4 million people around the world using an app designed to encourage people to give away rather than throw away surplus (剩余的) food. (威尔逊是全球340万使用该应用程序的人之一,该应用程序旨在鼓励人们放弃而不是扔掉多余的食物。)”可知,威尔逊使用应用程序来捡到一些面包和水果之外,还交了一个新朋友,即通过她的故事展示人们找到了解决食物浪费的高科技方法。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Almost 1.4 billion hectares of land — close to 30% of the world’s agricultural land — is dedicated to producing food that is never eaten, and the carbon footprint of food wastage makes it the third contributor of CO2. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways of tackling the global climate crisis.( 近14亿公顷土地(接近世界农业用地的30%)用于生产从未食用的食物,而食物浪费的碳足迹使其成为二氧化碳的第三个来源。减少食物浪费是应对全球气候危机最有效的方法之一。)”可知,过度的未食用食物的生产会导致增加碳排放,由此造成全球气候危机即全球变暖。故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“The app connects people with others who have surplus food but don’t have anyone to give it to because so many people are disconnected from their communities.( 这款应用程序将人们与其他有多余食物但没有人可以施舍的人联系起来,因为很多人与他们的社区脱节。)”
根据最后一段中“But if everyone makes small changes in the world, we’d dramatically reduce the amount of food that ends up in bins (但如果每个人都能对这个世界做出小小的改变,我们就能大幅减少垃圾桶里的食物数量。)”

D 33. B 34. C 35. B
根据第二段“It’s at this developmental age that students can master complex concepts like climate change and remain open to new ideas, the researchers say.Middle school is usually when we start to figure out how we really feel about the world and to form our own opinions.(研究人员表示,正是在这个发展阶段,学生才能掌握气候变化等复杂概念,并对新思想乐于接受。中学通常是我们开始了解自己对世界的真实感受并形成自己观点的时候)”可知,中学生在拯救地球这方面最有潜力是因为他们正处于形成自己观点的年龄。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第二句话“Research has shown that lessons on climate change that have the most impact typically frame the topic around something you can often see or experience,so.the lessons were focused on these themes, such as how the environment relates to animals or how an individual can directly affect the environment.(研究表明,影响最大的气候变化课程通常围绕着你经常看到或体验到的东西来阐述这个话题,因此,这些课程侧重于这些主题,例如环境如何与动物相关或个体如何直接影响环境)”可推知,这些主题是围绕我们经常看到或体验到的东西来阐述的。
根据第五段第二、三句话“The 357 kids, the study found, can best reach adults and encourage them to act to fight climate change, regardless of their parents’ political beliefs. In fact, the researchers found this method has the greatest impact on the people who are otherwise hardest to convince:conservative(保守的)males.(研究发现,这357个孩子不管他们父母的政治信仰如何,可以最好的与成年人联系,并鼓励他们采取行动应对气候变化。事实上,研究人员发现,这种方法对那些最难以说服的人——保守的男性——影响最大。)”可推知,接受课程的孩子对父母的影响更大。故选C。
35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段 Danielle Lawson所说的话“Immediate action is key.We have about 12 years to take action together to keep the global average temperature from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.Beyond that critical point, climate change will have done permanent damage.(立即采取行动是关键。我们有大约12年的时间共同采取行动,防止全球平均气温比工业化前水平上升1.5摄氏度。超过这一临界点,气候变化将造成永久性破坏)”可知,Danielle Lawson认为我们现在必须采取行动来保护我们的地球,防止气候变化,否则气候变化将造成永久性破坏。由此可推知,应对气候变化是当务之急。故选B。

【40题详解】
分析设空可知,空处应是本段小标题,是对本段的高度概括,根据后文“Often we lose sight of the positive, beneficial things in our lives.Everyone has things to be grateful for and making a list helps to concentrate your mind on these positives.Sit down with a pad and pencil, preferably in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.Allow yourself a few minutes to think about your life and identify the good things.(我们经常忽视生活中积极、有益的事情。

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Hearing our cries, Mr Lim rushed to help.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, my father recovered but had more bills to pay.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing our cries, Mr Lim rushed to help. The moment he figured out the emergency, Mr Lim quickly drove my father to the nearest hospital and paid the medical bill. Luckily, the operation turned out a success. While my father was in hospital, Mr Lim often visited us with some necessities. To relieve my mother’s burden, he even drove us to school every day.
Finally, my father recovered but had more bills to pay. Again Mr Lim came to our rescue. He lent us some money and arranged for my father to work in his shop to get some income. At the same time, he financed the education for me and my sister and brother. Whenever my parents thanked him for his help, he just simply said that our kindness deserved it. Finally, I understood the old saying that a good neighbor is better than a distant cousin. I felt blessed to live in such a good neighborhood.
①看望:visit/see
②减轻:relieve/ease
