DEAR READERS
My friend Tristan is a hurdler on a track-and-field team (田径队). I love to watch him run and jump over the hurdles (障碍). In these races, the hurdles are there to slow down the runners.
We all face hurdles in our lives. They slow us down as we run toward a goal. Some hurdles are low and can be easily jumped over. Others are much higher and a lot more difficult. They are big problems. To move forward, we need to break them down.
I thought about this as I read the story of Congressman (国会议员) John Lewis. He faced many hurdles because of his skin color (肤色). In 1956, when he was 16, he wanted a library card but was not allowed to have one. At that time, in some places in the U. S., only white people could use libraries. Experiences like that one made Lewis decide to break down the unfair hurdles for black people. He spent his life working towards this goal, not just for himself, but for people all across the country.
Although Lewis couldn’t get into a library as a young man, he later became the subject (主题) of many books on library shelves. He also wrote his own books. Lewis passed away in 2020, but his story lives on. It continues to make us believe that we can make the world fairer.

If you visit Beijing 101 Middle School, you’ll meet three lovely alpacas (羊驼) hanging around on campus.
“They came to our school in 2019,” said Zhang Ruixuan. The 15-year-old boy is one of the volunteers who take care of the alpacas together with the school’s workers. “These cute animals are definitely (绝对地) our school’s ‘treasure’”!
During the break, the alpacas always come to the playground to watch the students doing group exercises. At the end of the day, they sit in front of the school gate to see students off. “They give us great company (陪伴),” said Zhang.

“Alpacas are very timid (胆小的),” said Zhang. “If you scare them, they will spit (吐口水) at you to protect themselves. But they are smart and gentle in nature. They will treat you the way you treat them.”
The volunteers also need to help school workers clean the alpacas’ home—a small wooden pen (围栏) built beside an office building. “We need to put hay inside. Hi, Christine!
I once faced a big hurdle in math. I failed an exam and felt very sad. But I didn’t give up. I asked my teacher for help and practiced every day. Slowly, my grades improved. Even the tricky math problems that used to make me stare at the page for hours started to feel manageable. Finally, I passed the next exam with a good score! This experience taught me that hard work can overcome any difficulty.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
