Once in a village lived a wealthy man who had a clever son with curly golden hair. However the man was very worried about his son, Peter. The man tried every way to make his son stay away from bad habits, but it didn’t work at all.
One day, the man got to know that John, a famous teacher, had come to their village. The man went to John and asked him to help his son to get rid of his bad habits. John agreed and asked him to bring his son.
The next morning, the man came to John with his son. John took the young man for a walk through the garden. While walking, John stopped suddenly and pointed at a sunflower growing there and said to Peter, “Pull it out...” Peter held the plant between his thumb (拇指) and forefinger and pulled it out. After this, John went on to walk with the young man. After a while, he stopped again and pointed at a slightly bigger plant and said, “Pull it out...” Peter grabbed that plant and pulled hard and it came out with its roots and all. “Now, pull that one...!” said John, pointing at a bush. Peter used all his strength and succeeded after trying twice. “Now pull this one out...!” said John, pointing at a big guava (番石榴) tree. Peter grasped the trunk of the tree and tried to pull it out but it wouldn’t move. “It’s impossible,” said the young man, breathing heavily.
John smiled and said, “So it is with bad habits. When they are young, it is easy to pull them out, but when they take a hold, they cannot be uprooted. Don’t wait for bad habits to grow in you!” John’s words changed the young man’s life forever.

China has made a big step forward in its aviation industry (航空业) with the C919, the country’s first home-grown airplane. This exciting development means that China is now able to build its own airplanes, just like the big names Boeing and Airbus. The C919 is a bit like the Airbus A320 and the Boeing B737. It can carry between 158 and 192 passengers and can fly distances between 4,075 kilometers to 5,555 kilometers. That’s enough to fly from one side of China to the other! Air China and China Southern Airlines have just taken delivery (运输) of their first C919 airplanes. They plan to use these planes on many different routes, which means more people will get to fly on them. China Eastern Airlines, which got its C919s first, is already using them on several routes within China.
Up to now, more than 1,000 orders have been placed for the C919, and nine planes have been delivered. That’s a lot of interest in a new airplane! Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern have all ordered 100 C919s each, and they expect to get all of them by 2031.
The C919 is not just about flying people from one place to another. It’s also helping China to develop new technologies and improve its manufacturing (制造业) skills. This can lead to even more advanced products in the future.
Since the C919 started flying with China Eastern Airlines last year, it has completed over 3,600 flights and flown for more than 10,000 hours. That’s a lot of flying and a good sign that the plane is reliable.
China’s air travel market is growing fast. In July, there were 69 million trips, which is a new record. As more people travel, the demand for airplanes will keep increasing, which means there will be more of them in the future. Experts predict that China’s air travel market will become the biggest in the world by 2043, and the C919 could be a big part of that growth.
So, the C919 is not just an airplane; it’s a symbol of China’s progress and a sign of even greater things to come.
8. Why the C919 is important for China’s aviation industry?
A. Because it is a copy of a Boeing plane.
B. Because it is the first airplane to carry 192 passengers.
C. Because it is the only airplane used by Air China.
D. Because it is the first airplane made by China.
9. The first customer of the C919 is from _________ Airlines.
A. Air China B. Airbus C. China Eastern D. China Southern
10. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in Para. 5?
A. Trips. B. Records. C. Airplanes. D. Products.
11. Which statement can be inferred from the passage?
A. China’s aviation industry has a bright and hopeful future.
B. More than 10,000 orders have been placed for the C919.
C. The C919 is only about carrying people to travel.
D. More industries will be created because of the C919.

March 20 marks World Oral Health Day (世界口腔健康日). It’s a time to focus on the importance of good oral health. Zhang Liwen, a dentist from a hospital in Beijing, was invited to share some tips on oral health with teenagers at a middle school.
Why is oral health important?
It’s more than just about having a healthy mouth. Our mouth is the first place where food goes, and it holds harmful things. Keeping our mouth clean and healthy helps our stomach work well. And our mouth affects our confidence and feelings, too. Problems like bad breath can make us want to avoid socializing.
What are some common oral problems faced by teenagers?
Tooth decay (蛀牙) is one. Signs of it are teeth with dark spots or teeth that hurt when eating very hot, cold or sweet foods. Tooth decay can harm the tooth nerve (神经) and the life of the tooth.
Then there’s periodontitis (牙周炎). It often happens when you don’t take good care of your mouth and teeth. It could lead to loosening of the teeth, among other problems.
How many times a day should I brush?
It’s best to brush your teeth for three to five minutes a time. But it’s best not to brush your teeth for more than five minutes because it can hurt your gums. Brush your teeth two to three times a day. The most important time is the evening when you brush your teeth before bed. It’s also advised to wash your mouth out with water after every meal to wash away bacteria from food.
What is the best age for getting orthodontic treatment (正畸治疗)?
The best age for orthodontic treatment is between 12 and 16 years old. At age 12, generally, all your adult teeth have fully appeared. It’s easier to move young adult teeth through orthodontics than it is for older adult teeth.
Furthermore, by receiving orthodontic treatment earlier, it becomes easier to clean your teeth and set yourself up for an easier oral health road ahead.
12. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “spots”?
A. Certain areas or places. B. Parts of television shows.
C Small marks on something. D. Positions in a competition.
13. Who is the most likely to have oral problems?
A. Jane received teeth treatment last month. B. John brushes teeth carefully every day.
C. Amy loves eating hot food very much. D. Tom seldom has ice-cream or chocolate.
14. How can teenagers have good oral health?
A. By brushing the teeth for three to five minutes a time.
B. By getting orthodontic treatment as early as possible.
C. By eating chocolates, cakes and candies every day.
D. By avoiding social communication with other people.

Furthermore by receiving orthodontic treatment earlier, it becomes easier to clean your teeth and set yourself up for an easier oral health road ahead.
12. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “spots”?
A. Certain areas or places. B. Parts of television shows.
C. Small marks on something.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
