Listen Up!
Did you know the British Library is home to the nation’s sound archive (档案)? An extraordinary collection of over 6.5 million recordings of speech, music, wildlife and the environment, these recordings — from the UK and around the world — date from the birth of recorded sound in the 1880s to the present day.
Join us for Listen Up! — our sound and listening workshops for Key Stage 2 students.
Listen Up: Dive into (深入研究) Sound (90 mins)
In this creative workshop, learners will uncover the history of recorded sound, experience how a sound can transform a space, tune into (留意) the everyday noises around them and see where close listening can take the imagination. Inspired by these experiences, they will create original responses through discussion, drawing, and writing.
Listen Up: Sound Lab (90 mins)
Inspired by the history of recorded sound, students will use a range of skills to create, collect, amplify (增强), mix and record sound. They will use digital equipment including speakers and contact microphones. This exploratory and hands-on session (课程) ends in a performance of sound compositions celebrating learners’ creativity and experimentation.
Sessions can be booked as a stand-alone workshop, or combined to make a full day at the library. If booked on the same day, one session will run before lunch and one after lunch.

Aesha Ash spent most of her life ballet dancing and even turned it into a career (职业) as a member of the New York City Ballet. As much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her responsibility heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company.
After retiring (退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet.
Aesha set up a one-week camp that invited kids to not only learn the basics of ballet, but also get an introduction to French (since she says it is “the language of ballet”).
Her first camp was in 2018 in a poor neighborhood in New York. When she arrived she was greeted by dozens of students, most of whom were African Americans. She wanted to help kids who otherwise might not have ever had the chance to live in the world of ballet.
On the final day of camp, after a week of learning, the students put on a final performance (表演) for their family and friends. Before the performance, Aesha said she was nervous that it would be less of a performance and more of a mess, since the campers were all between 8 and 11 years old. Much to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect. She said, “When we went out to our first circle and the kids began counting in French and performing the steps they had just learned, my heart melted.”
Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. She found a way to turn that seemingly unbearable weight she once carried around into something good for kids, as well as for the world of ballet.
24. When did Aesha decide to start The Swan Dreams Project?
A. About ten years after her retirement.
B. When she was about to retire in 2007.
C. When she was working for the New York City Ballet.
D. After she met some ballet lovers from poor areas.
25. What do we know about the one-week camp Aesha set up?
A. It only accepts African American kids.
B. It only attracted several students at first.
C. It is cheaper for students from poor areas.
D. It was first held in a neighborhood in New York.
26. Why was Aesha surprised on the final day of her first camp?
A. The campers performed more steps than they had learned.
B. The campers invited her to perform with them.
C. The campers gave a good final performance.
D. The campers could speak fluent French.
27. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Being the only African American ballerina in her group.
B. Providing poor kids with chances to learn ballet.
C. Doing something good for the world of ballet.
D. Ballet dancing as a career.

“The Last Dance”, the documentary, told the story of Michael Jordan and his success with the Chicago Bulls. We learned a lot about Michael Jordan and his championships. We took behind-the-scenes glimpses (一瞥) at what it’s like to compete in the NBA. We were given a glimpse into the ‘90s basketball era (时代) at a time when almost no sports are being played. But it also meant something for our culture, experts say.
Dr. Josh Shuart, the director of sport management at the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology at Sacred Heart University (Connecticut), told the Deseret News that the documentary showed something important for our modern society. Watching “The Last Dance” gave us something to look forward to during a time when there’s nothing else going on, he said. “Why is it important and why did people watch it? The latter is simple: with the absence of live sports of any kind, it was probably the single most interesting thing on TV,” Shuart said in an email to the Deseret News.
Michael Jordan matters for sports culture, too. Jordan set the standard when it came to connecting athletes to brands (品牌) and brands to athletes. Athletes can take care of their brand during their careers and even well into retirement (退休) . Shaquille O’Neal is an example, Shuart said. The Los Angeles Lakers legend — though highly celebrated for his basketball career — has built post-basketball success through business opportunities.
There might not have been too much new content in “The Last Dance” for sports fans who grew up in the Jordan era. But storytelling still provides a path for us to find happiness, Shuart said.
“Above all, even though we know the beginning, middle, and end, the storytelling provides amazing insight and results in a very interesting story,” he said.
28. What is “The Last Dance” mainly about?
A. The development of basketball in the 1990s. B. Michael Jordan’s growing-up experience.
C. The history of the Chicago Bulls. D. Michael Jordan’s success with the Chicago Bulls.
29. Why did the author take Shaquille O’Neal as an example?
A. To prove that it takes athletes much hard work to be successful.
B. To show Michael Jordan’s great influence on other athletes.
C. To discuss why basketball means a lot to most people.
D. To compare Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.
30. What does Shuart think of “The Last Dance”?
A. It shows Michael Jordan’s unknown life. B. It cannot attract Michael Jordan’s fans.
C. It is encouraging and successful. D. It is boring for most people.
31. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A documentary review. B. A business report.
C. An official notice. D. A TV guide.
D
People make a choice to volunteer for their community, but making it a graduation requirement takes away the meaning of volunteerism. Many states require students to perform a set number of volunteer hours to graduate. With recent talks about implementing (实施 ) this in Virginia City Public Schools, a critical question arises: if volunteering is mandatory (强制性的), is it truly volunteering?
Required or not, volunteering helps other people who are in need and helps the community as a whole. Requiring students to volunteer will increase the number of people who serve their community, but people volunteer out of the kindness of their hearts. They should not be forced to volunteer by someone else. “When students are told what to do or think, they lose drive to do it because their beliefs are ignored,” according to Brillianto’s article “Why Volunteering Should Not Be a Requirement.”
Another problem with forced volunteerism is that not all students have transportation. “I don’t think it should be required to graduate. I think it should be a choice like it already is, because some people just don’t have the ability or transportation to do that” said sophomore Leila Alpaugh.
“Quality over quantity” also comes into play when it comes to volunteering. If forced to volunteer, some students who don’t care about the cause will weaken the passion of others who do, and it can end up causing problems for the organization and others who volunteer there.
So, instead of making volunteering a requirement, schools should encourage students to talk to a guidance counselor (辅导员) about current service projects they could take part in.
32. What makes volunteering less meaningful?
A. Limited service choices. B. Linking it to graduation.
C. Boring volunteer classes. D. Recording service hours.
33. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A. Forced volunteering helps few people. B. Forced volunteering becomes common.
C. Volunteers’ real thoughts matter. D. Schools’rules have bad effects.
34. What does the author show by mentioning “transportation”?
A. The importance of enough choices. B. The benefit in serving strangers.
C. The trouble in reaching an agreement. D. The unfairness of forced volunteering.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward forced volunteering?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Guarded. D. Negative.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下列材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的知文。
Lily was a high school student who loved complaining herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she would feel jealous (妒忌的) and want to buy something better. Her parents often told her, “True value isn’t in what you own,” but she never listened.
One day, Lily noticed a girl from another class, whose name was Mary. Mary’s family was wealthy, but she always wore simple clothes and carried an old schoolbag. Unlike Lily, Mary never joined in the students’ discussions about brands or prices. Instead, she spent her time helping classmates with math problems or volunteering in the school library. Her grades were always at the top of the class, and everyone respected (尊重) her.
Lily couldn’t understand why Mary didn’t care about material things. One afternoon, Lily saw Mary sitting alone under a tree, reading a book. She decided to talk to her. “Why don’t you buy nicer things?” Lily asked. “Your family has enough money.” Mary looked up with a smile.“I’d rather spend money on things that matter,” she said. “Like helping others or buying books.”
That night, Lily thought about Mary’s words. She realized that she had been looking for things that didn’t bring real happiness. The next day, she made a decision: she would stop comparing herself with others and start focusing on what truly mattered.

W: Well, one day I was reading about a school in the Netherlands. That had been started by a poor married couple and the wife was called Beatrice Cadbury! I discovered she was a member of the famous Cadbury family. I felt puzzled. Why was a rich woman living as a poor person? The answer was so amazing that I decided to write a book.
M: What did you discover?
W: Well, as a child she lived in huge houses and was educated at the best schools. She had a very comfortable life. But Beatrice grew up wanting to make society a better place. She married a man from the Netherlands. While she was in the Netherlands, she decided she didn’t want to receive any more money from the Cadbury business. She told her brother, who was running the company, that he should give her share of the money to the factory workers instead.
M: And then what happened?
W: Well, she even invited poor people to live in her house. When it became too crowded, she and her family had to live in a tent.
M: Oh, a great woman!

If you have any problems, please contact the housing staff. You’ll find the office at the entrance to the college and it’s open from nine until four Monday to Friday. During the holidays, it’s open, mornings only, on Monday and Thursday. However, if you have an emergency, you can contact somebody on 9785423. Moving on now... The college has excellent facilities to help you with your studies, including the Learning Resource Center that has about 50,000 library books. There are also 50 computers so you can use the Internet. There are plenty of places to eat at the college, like the Hungry Cafe on the first floor where you can have sandwiches and salad, or, if you prefer a hot meal at a very reasonable price, you can go to the Food Hall. You’ll find it next to the bookshop, on the ground floor. Otherwise, you can have a pub lunch in the students’ bar. There are also machines around the college, where you can buy chocolate and drinks. Right, if anybody has any questions about these matters, or anything else, please stay behind now. I hope all of you enjoy your time at our college.

D. A TV guide.

B. Positive. C. Guarded. D. Negative.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. D

【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Requiring students to volunteer will increase the number of people who serve their community, but people volunteer out of the kindness of their hearts. They should not be forced to volunteer by someone else. “When students are told what to do or think, they lose drive to do it because their beliefs are ignored,” according to Brillianto’s article “Why Volunteering Should Not Be a Requirement.”(要求学生做志愿者会增加为社区服务的人数,但人们做志愿者是出于他们的善意。他们不应该被别人强迫做志愿者。Brillianto的文章《为什么志愿服务不应该是一种要求》指出:“当学生被告知要做什么或想什么时,他们就会失去动力,因为他们的信仰被忽视了。”)”可知,作者暗示志愿者的真实想法很重要。故选C。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Another problem with forced volunteerism is that not all students have transportation. “I don’t think it should be required to graduate. I think it should be a choice like it already is, because some people just don’t have the ability or transportation to do that” said sophomore Leila Alpaugh.(强迫志愿服务的另一个问题是,并不是所有的学生都有交通工具。大二学生莱拉·阿尔帕夫说:“我认为不应该把它作为毕业的必要条件。我认为这应该像现在一样是一个选择,因为有些人就是没有能力或交通工具去做这件事。”)”可知,作者提到“交通工具”是为了说明强迫志愿服务的不公平性,因为并不是所有的学生都有交通工具去做志愿服务。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“So, instead of making volunteering a requirement, schools should encourage students to talk to a guidance counselor (辅导员) about current service projects they could take part in.(因此,学校不应该把志愿服务作为一项要求,而应该鼓励学生与辅导员讨论他们可以参加的当前服务项目。)”可知,作者对强迫志愿服务持否定态度。故选D。

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share some advice from the classmates. Recently, many students have mentioned that while you’re clearly a passionate teacher, class activities sometimes come across as repetitive. They’ve noticed that the lack of variety has led to a gradual decline in their engagement with English.
Could you try introducing new activities? For example, group debates, role-plays about daily life, or watching English videos followed by discussions. These ideas could make lessons more dynamic and encourage active participation.
We deeply appreciate your dedication and hope these suggestions help create an even more enjoyable learning environment. Thank you for your understanding!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The following week, Lily began to learn from Mary. She stopped begging her parents for expensive items and instead used her pocket money to buy a few second-hand books, which she shared with classmates who couldn’t afford new ones. When she saw someone struggling with homework, she would sit down patiently and help, just like Mary did. During lunch breaks, instead of talking about brand-new sneakers or phones, she joined Mary in the library, organizing books and helping younger students find what they needed. At first, she felt a little shy, but seeing the smiles on others’ faces warmed her heart.
Months later, teachers and classmates all praised Lily. Her grades had jumped from average to top 10, and she organized a weekly study group that helped half the class improve. At the school’s volunteer day, she led a team to clean the community park, laughing as she picked up litter with classmates. “Lily’s heart is as bright as her smile now,” her math teacher said in class. Her parents, seeing her donate old clothes to charity, hugged her tightly. Lily finally understood: true value lies not in what you have, but in what you give.
