I used to think my little corner of urban England was somewhere I could get away from the stress and strain of modern-day life — until they moved in next door. There are two of them. They are white, woolly and probably have sharp teeth as well as loud bark. But every time their constant barking interrupts my sleep, I remind myself that, in many respects, I am lucky. The neighbors don’t hold all-night parties, nor do they shout or throw crockery at each other, and though their dogs may bark, they don’t bite.
According to a recent consumer magazine report on “nightmare neighbors”, dogs are the fifth most common source of bad relations between neighbors. Noise of any description heads the list of complaints, followed by DIY enthusiasts, parking quarrelling, and arguments over house extensions.
So what alternatives are there? One is to take legal action. But this can be time-consuming and expensive and does nothing to improve already difficult relationships. The other alternatives are to sell up and go, or to try to reach a solution with the help of someone neutral. Mediation UK— the United Nations equivalent of garden fence conflicts — was set in 1984 to help resolve community disagreements.
In most cases, the lack of communication is found the main cause of conflict. David Nation of Plymouth Mediation points to poor public housing and widespread unemployment as additional factors. He also reports more cases of complaints from people who live in flats. Large houses built in the nineteenth century and designed as single-occupation family homes have, he says, been changed into flats with little or no attention to sound insulation. Dividing walls are paper thin and hardly block out sound at all.
Buyers can also be put off by the external appearance of neighboring houses. Anything from wild, uncared for gardens to unusual external color schemes can put off buyers — even though the offending property is next door. But it could be worse. John Gladden, of Norbury in Surrey upset his neighbors in St Oswald’s Road by mounting a huge fish in fiberglass (玻璃纤维) and putting it on the roof of his house. The local council argued that he should have got planning permission; residents thought the fish did nothing to improve the appearance of the neighborhood, and war broke out. Sightseers poured in and homes near the suburban property can now be hard to sell.
1.Why doesn’t the writer like her next-door neighbor’s dogs?
A.They wake her up. B.They sometimes bark.
C.They are aggressive. D.They remind her of sheep.
2.What does “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.the color scheme B.the garden C.the situation D.the house
3.The purpose of this passage is to _______.
A.inform people what to do if they have problems with their neighbors
B.describe the writer’s own problems with her neighbors.
C.illustrate the types and causes of problems between neighbors
D.explain the activities of the organization Mediation UK
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.C
根据第一段中“They are white, woolly and probably have sharp teeth as well as loud bark. But every time their constant barking interrupts my sleep, I remind myself that, in many respects, I am lucky. 故选A项。
通读最后一段,根据划线词句前文“Buyers can also be put off by the external appearance of neighboring houses. 和后文“John Gladden, of Norbury in Surrey upset his neighbors in St Oswald’s Road by mounting a huge fish in fiberglass (玻璃纤维) and putting it on the roof of his house. 以及“Sightseers poured in and homes near the suburban property can now be hard to sell. 从而推知划线词句“But it could be worse.
通读全文,根据第二段“According to a recent consumer magazine report on ‘nightmare neighbors’, dogs are the fifth most common source of bad relations between neighbors. Noise of any description heads the list of complaints, followed by DIY enthusiasts, parking quarrelling, and arguments over house extensions.
You might have heard about integrity all your life, but have you ever wondered what it truly means? From your employers to politicians and even newscasters, it is being used by everyone. Although the word is overused many times, what really matters is being integral in life and 1 (maximize) that trait because it affects everything in life. Once we master integrity, our lives actually start flourishing.
We make many important decisions in life but sometimes, in fact, our lives 2 (impact) by the more minor decisions that almost seem insignificant. Trust me, these small actions and decisions can greatly impact our self-respect, integrity, and overall reputation! In a world dominated by people who make headlines for all the wrong reasons, 3 (find) people who actually do the right thing and contribute to society can be extremely rare.
What is the meaning of integrity, now that you have heart it so many times? Integrity means living your life according to your own morals and ethics. To have integrity, you 4 have a clear sense of what is right and wrong. Besides, you must also know what the purpose of your life is, and 5 you intend to do with your life. You must stop 6 (panic) about what I just told you, and I’m not telling you to find the meaning of your life right away. Just develop it as an afterthought.
In order to start having integrity, you must first define the morals that mean 7 (much) to you. Then you need to decide what you want to achieve in life, and why? When you start defining your morals and ethics, it won’t be long before you will start actually following them in life. 8 you start doing that, that is integrity!
There are some important things that you should know about integrity. This isn’t something that you are born with. It is a personality trait that you develop with time. It is certain experiences in our life 9 shape our morals and ethics, and integrity is definitely like that.
Integrity isn’t what you develop and keep forever. It is used in decision-making or when you plan to start 10 new in your life!
1.maximizing 2.are impacted 3.finding 4.must 5.what 6.panicking 7.most 8.Once 9.that 10.something
故填are impacted。
此处作主语,应用动名词短语finding people,谓语动词是can be。故填finding。
根据下文“Besides, you must also know what the purpose of your life is, and 5 you intend to do with your life.(你还必须知道你生活的目的是什么,你打算用你的生活做什么)”,besides并列两个句子,可知空处表示“必须”用情态动词must。故填must。
故填what。
故填most。
分析句子结构可知,此处是强调句型It is…that/who…,强调的是主语experiences in our life,指物,应用that。故填that。

Dear editor,
I’m Li Hua, a student in senior 2. Congratulations on the 10th anniversary of Campus English! I have been its fan for two years.
I really find your program beneficial to me. First, the announcers speak in fluent and authentic English. I often imitate their pronunciation and intonation. Second, I like the English songs, which help me relax. However, I think it would be better to add something new, which covers English learning experience as well as excellent compositions from the students.
I would appreciate it if my suggestion could be adopted.
Yours,
Li Hua
