When my parents moved to a new city, I felt like my world fell apart. Everything that had once felt familiar was gone: my friends, my routines, even the streets I used to walk on. I didn’t know anyone, and the thought of starting over terrified me. On the first day at my new school, I sat at the back of the classroom, hoping no one would notice me. The noise of students chatting made me feel even smaller, like a stranger who didn’t belong.
But then, during English class, something unexpected happened. The teacher asked us to introduce ourselves by sharing a short story. My heart raced and my voice shook as I spoke about how my grandmother taught me to recite (朗诵)English poems under the stars in our backyard. I remembered the smell of jasmine in the summer air and the way my grandmother’s voice carried a quiet strength. To my surprise, the class listened in silence, and when I finished, a soft round of applause (掌声)came from several students. For the first time that day, I felt seen.
After class, a girl named Lily came up to me. “I love poetry, too,” she said with a warm smile. We talked about our favorite writers and the comfort that words can bring. She invited me to join the school’s English club. The following weeks were filled with new experiences: reading aloud with confidence, preparing small plays that made us laugh, even writing our own poems and sharing them. For the first time since moving, I felt that English was not just a subject, but a bridge that connected me to others and gave me courage.
By the end of the term, I was no longer the quiet student in the back row. Standing on stage, reciting a poem with my new friends, I realized that starting over didn’t mean losing myself — it meant discovering a new side of me, one that was braver, stronger, and ready to belong.
24. Why did the author sit at the back of the classroom on the first day?

25. What made the author feel noticed during English class?
A. Her grandmother’s story. B. Her teacher’s praise.
C. Her friend’s invitation. D. Her classmates’ applause.
26. Which word best describes the author by the end of the term?
A. Anxious. B. Confident. C. Lonely. D. Generous.
27. What does the author’s experience show?
A True friendship always begins with hobbies.
B. Success comes only after repeated practice.
C. Starting over can lead to new discoveries.
D. Confidence is the key to winning competitions.

On social media, reading has taken on new styles. Many readers now create colorful and detailed notes, known as marginalia (书页批注). These marks sometimes cover entire pages and may even match the color of a book’s cover. While some see this trend (趋势) as creative and personal, others question whether writing in books is a bad habit or a useful practice.
Yet marginalia are hardly a modern invention. From Leonardo da Vinci to modern writers, generations of readers have long left their thoughts in the margins. Such notes often provide valuable insights for later readers and occasionally reshape the understanding of the text. In recent years, bestselling novelist Ann Patchett released a special edition with notes of her novel Tom Lake to raise money for bookstores, showing how marginalia can generate cultural and financial value.
Scientists have also examined the phenomenon scientifically. A study in Frontiers in Psychology recorded brain activity and found that writing by hand uses more parts of the brain than typing. This suggests that the physical act of writing, including marginalia, deepens memory and comprehension. Maryanne Wolf at UCLA further argued that making notes enables readers to go beyond the author’s ideas and discover their own understanding.
In education, marginalia also plays a role. Turkish professor Demet Yayli observed that taking notes encourages deep reading, helps students clearly express their views, and strengthens their learner autonomy. With greater autonomy, students are able to make decisions in learning and take responsibility for their progress, rather than wait for directions. Although note styles may appear unusual — underlining every line of a favorite character or marking romantic passages — experts agree that as long as the practice aids comprehension, any style is acceptable. Writing in the margins, far from being harmful, can personalize texts and enrich intellectual engagement.
28. According to the first paragraph, why has marginalia caused debate?
A. It changes the appearance of the book. B. Its true value is doubted.
C. Readers enjoy colorful notes. D. Books should follow trends.
29. Why was Leonardo da Vinci mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To explain marginalia is a bad habit.
B. To say marginalia is not something new.
C. To show marginalia can create cultural value.
D. To prove books with marginalia tend to be expensive.
30 How did scientists examine the effects of handwriting?
A. By comparing writing topics. B. By collecting memory test scores.
C. By tracking brain activity. D. By recalling the author’s ideas.
31. What does the underlined word “autonomy” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Importance. B. Curiosity. C. Creativity. D. Independence.
D
Recent research has shown remarkable conservation (保护) outcomes from community-based management (CBM) in the Amazon. Rather than relying only on government agencies, local people take responsibility for protecting fisheries and lakes. Their work has expanded protection far beyond the lakes, covering forests and upland areas important for many species.
In Amazonas alone, about 15 million hectares of forest have thus been protected. The costs are low, but the benefits are great: Fish numbers have gone up again, and animals such as giant otters, manatees, and Amazon river turtles have also increased. These achievements highlight the special strengths of local people. Permanently present in these landscapes, they have the strongest interest and ability to keep resources safe, becoming the “unsung heroes” of conservation. The model also shows a good mix of scientific knowledge and traditional practice: while protecting biodiversity (生物多样性), it also increases family income through sustainable harvests.
However, there are challenges. At present, all the costs are dealt with by the volunteer watch groups themselves. Depending only on unpaid work cannot last long. To solve this, systems such as Payments for Environmental Services (PES) should be used so that communities can be properly paid.
The researchers urge greater recognition and financial support from governments and civil society. Supporting community-based conservation is not only an ecological necessity but also a matter of social justice (公平). By empowering those already engaged in frontline conservation, society can safeguard biodiversity, strengthen local economies, and ensure a better future for the next generations.
32. What can we learn about CBM in the Amazon from paragraph 1?
A. It relies completely on government.
B. It is led by international organizations.
C. Its work only focuses on lake protection.
D. Its nature protection work is done by local people.
33. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. Forest protection requires high costs.
B. Fish numbers keep falling with efforts.
C. Local efforts bring low-cost success.
D. Animals rise as forests keep disappearing.
34. What problem does the CBM model face?
A. Shortage of basic training.
B. Dependence on unpaid work.
C. Lack of local interest.
D. Disagreement among experts.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A New Path for Protection
B. Community Life in Amazon
C. Forests at Social Risk
D. Challenges Beyond Science

Fun Facts About the English Language
The English language is spoken by millions of people worldwide and is famous for its many curiosities. From unusual spelling rules to surprising vocabulary, it offers learners both fun and challenges.
Hundreds of new words are added to dictionaries every year. In 2020 alone, more than 500 were included in Merriam-Webster. ___36___ This shows that language grows together with them.
Letters also play curious roles. “E” is by far the most common, appearing in about 11% of all words. It occurs in “the,” the most used word, and in verbs like “be.” ___37___ With so many appearances, it is naturally the most typed letter on keyboards.
Pronunciation brings even greater challenges. The combination “ough,” for example, can be pronounced in ten different ways. In one sentence——“A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough”——all of them appear. ___38___ These irregularities remind learners that English spelling has never been fully unified.
Culture adds more surprises. The United States, for instance, has never declared English its official national language, even though it dominates daily life. ___39___This shows that a language’s influence depends more on practice than on law.
English continues to evolve. Dictionaries expand every year, old words gain new meanings, and learners everywhere adapt to its changes. ___40___
A. That is why “E” is called the king of letters.
B. Such a fact may surprise many language learners.
C. This mix of rules and exceptions puzzles learners.
D. The letter “E” is mainly used in specific writing.

By the end of the term I was no longer the quiet student in the back row. Standing on stage, reciting a poem with my new friends, I realized that starting over didn’t mean losing myself — it meant discovering a new side of me, one that was braver, stronger, and ready to belong.
24. Why did the author sit at the back of the classroom on the first day?
A. To avoid drawing attention to herself.
B. To observe the new teacher’s style.
C. To make friends more quickly.
D. To get a better view of the blackboard.
25. What made the author feel noticed during English class?
A. Her grandmother’s story. B. Her teacher’s praise.
C. Her friend’s invitation. D. Her classmates’ applause.
26. Which word best describes the author by the end of the term?
A. Anxious. B. Confident. C. Lonely. D. Generous.
27. What does the author’s experience show?
A. True friendship always begins with hobbies.

30. How did scientists examine the effects of handwriting?

C Local efforts bring low-cost success.
D. Animals rise as forests keep disappearing.
34. What problem does the CBM model face?
A. Shortage of basic training.
B. Dependence on unpaid work.
C. Lack of local interest.
D. Disagreement among experts.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A New Path for Protection
B. Community Life in Amazon
C. Forests at Social Risk
D. Challenges Beyond Science
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. A
