Although nowadays her images are often used on coffee cups and T-shirts, and the movies based on her life or her novels are often box-office hits, Jane Austen, one of the most important English novelists of the 19th century, spent her short, quiet life away from public attention. For most of her life she lived in a rural area of southern England where she was born. Her formal education was limited to a short time at boarding school.
Austen started writing at the age of twelve, for her family’s amusement and her own. In 1803 one publisher paid £10 for the copyright of the novel we now know as Northanger Abbey, but then refused to publish it, so Austen had to go to great lengths to buy it back. Later, she published Sense and Sensibility in 1811 at her own expense, which was a big success. Her other significant works came out over the following years. Northanger Abbey was finally published in 1818, one year after her death at age 41.
Her novels are all in Austen’s own words, “pictures of life in country villages,” but the details reflect the influence of the great social changes. Through their heroines (女主人公), readers can see how difficult women’s life were during a period when a lady’s security depended on her making a good marriage. But would the marriage hurt the independence of mind? This was the key issue that Austen and her heroines cared most about.
Instead of using a male pseudonym (笔名), which was a common practice for women writers at her time, Austen just signed “a lady” as the author of her books. It seemed modest (谦逊的), but her writing voice was so confident and sharp, laughing at what was widely accepted as traditions. For Austen, to live was to be herself, and her quietness was indeed a loud voice against the established conventions.
4. Why is Austen’s popularity mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To highlight her importance in fashion.
B. To make a comparison with her real life.
C. To explain the reasons behind her success.
D. To give an introduction to her achievements.
5. What do we know about the book Northanger Abbey?
A. It was Austen’s first published book. B. Its publication was a difficult process.
C. It made Austen popular with readers. D. Its copyright was sold to another writer.
6. What did Austen consider most important for women?
A. Social equality. B. Freedom of thought.
C. A safe marriage. D. Peaceful country life.
7. Why did Austen use “a lady” as the author of her books?
A. To challenge traditions. B. To follow the trends.
C. To show her modesty. D. To hide her identity.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. B 7. A

【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“In 1803 one publisher paid £10 for the copyright of the novel we now know as Northanger Abbey, but then refused to publish it, so Austen had to go to great lengths to buy it back. (奥斯汀没有使用男性笔名,这在她那个时代的女性作家中很常见,她只是在自己的书中署名“一位女士”。这看似谦逊,但她的写作声音却非常自信和尖锐,嘲笑了被广泛接受的传统)”可知,奥斯汀用“一位女士”署名是为了挑战传统。故选A项。

Our family sat around the dining table, trying hard to think of an idea. We wanted to make a scarecrow (稻草人) to enter it into the 2024 Scarecrow Festival.
The scarecrow festival had started during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, in an attempt to lift people’s spirits. It was a hit, and had become an annual event, getting bigger each year, with around 50 scarecrows being entered in 2023.
As well as the scarecrow display, dotted along a 14km section of road, there are market stalls, games, food and entertainment. And all the money made goes back into community projects. The scarecrows are judged on different categories, such as the funniest and the most traditional.
“Why don’t we make Crowgun this year?” Pearl, my elder son, suggested. The idea was a nod to Australian breakdancer (霹雳舞者) Rachael Louise Gunn, 37, who became famous after her performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“That’s a great idea,” I said. We bought a parachute sports suit from a second-hand store and filled it with hay. Shaping Crowgun into a break-dancing pose was challenging — metal wires hidden inside let us twist its arms and legs upside down. As we were carefully adjusting its break-dancing pose, the kids couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
On festival day, over 50 scarecrows lined the 14km road. Our Crowgun was there among them, standing next to figures like Marilyn Monroe, a huge spider. Pearl got a little scared when she saw the hairy legs of the spider, but she couldn’t help smiling at how energetic our Crowgun looked. Neighbors chatted at food stalls while kids played games nearby. When Crowgun won “the Funniest Scarecrow,” we cheered excitedly. Pearl’s face lit up with joy as I praised his clever idea.
Now, we’re thinking about next year’s design. This festival proves even small towns can create big joy. To other rural communities: try something similar! Laughter and teamwork truly bring people together.
8. Why was the scarecrow festival originally started?
A. To compete with neighboring towns’ affairs.
B. To raise funds for rebuilding homes after disasters.
C. To promote local sports clubs like the cricket team.
D. To uplift the community during COVID-19 and hardships.
9. What made the family finally choose to create “Crowgun”?
A. Pearl’s creative idea offering a fresh twist. B. Their aim to celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympics.
C. Their desire to honor a famous athlete. D. Breakdancing scarecrows being easier to make.
10. What do the community members think of the festival?
A. They consider it as overly competitive. B. They prefer fundraising to creativity.
C. They prefer smaller, simpler affairs. D. They value it as a unifying and joyful tradition.
11. What message does the text convey?
A. Sports-themed events are essential for rural towns.
B. Creativity and teamwork can strengthen small communities.
C. Children’s ideas always lead to success in competitions.
D. Traditional scarecrow designs are losing popularity.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. B

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““Why don’t we make Crowgun this year?” Pearl, my elder son, suggested. Laughter and teamwork truly bring people together.(这个节日证明,即使是小城镇也能创造出巨大的欢乐。我想对其他农村社区说:试试类似的活动吧!欢笑和团队合作确实能把人们凝聚在一起。)”可知,本文传达的信息是创造力和团队合作能够增强小型社区的凝聚力。故选B。

It was a cool autumn morning when the school announced the annual sports day. For most students, it was a day of excitement and joy, but for me, it was just another event I wanted to avoid. I had always been the type to shy away from group activities, preferring the company of my books and thoughts.
Our class monitor, Sarah, noticed my unwillingness. She was the very image of enthusiasm and leadership, always trying to bring the class together. One day, she approached me during lunch. “Why don’t you join us for the relay race? It’ll be fun,” she said with a warm smile. I hesitated, but her persistence was hard to ignore.
The next day, Sarah organized a practice session. I unwillingly joined, feeling out of place among my more athletic classmates. As we ran, I tripped and fell, scraping (擦伤) my knee. Embarrassed, I wanted to quit, but Sarah was there in an instant, offering a hand and words of encouragement. “It’s okay, we’re a team,” she said. At this time, other fellow classmates came to encourage me. Their kindness made me feel less alone.
As the days went by, I found myself looking forward to the practices. The care and support among my classmates was infectious. I began to see the value of teamwork and the joy of shared experiences. My initial unwillingness melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.
The anticipation for the sports day filled me with excitement. I dream of the cheers, the applauding crowd, and the thrill of competition. Training hard, I longed to showcase my skills, push my limits, share and feel the joy of victory. This event was more than a game; it means a lot for me. I could not wait to be part of it!

____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The day I looked forward to came eventually. The air buzzed with cheers as our relay team stepped onto the track. I was seized by tension and unease, my palms sweating constantly. Sarah patted me on my shoulders, giving me encouragement with an inspiring look. A sense of determination crowding in, I raised my head confidently. When the whistle blew, I dashed like an arrow. But my competitors ran rather fast. My teammates’ shouts urged me forward. What made me frustrated was that I didn’t catch up with them. I was the last one to hand over the baton.
Our opponent winning narrowly, I blamed our failure on myself. “If I’d run faster, we could have won.” I murmured, burying my head, with tears of guilt rolling down my checks. Approaching me. Sara said firmly, “We all gave our best!” The team gathered around, echoing her words. So warm was I that I felt incredibly comforted. Later, we shared snacks under a tree, encouraging each other to do it better next year. We were overwhelmed with joy, broad smiles lighting up our faces. It was then that I realized victory wasn’t just about medals; it was the courage to try and the bonds we’d built. Sports Day had taught me to cherish both.

Her novels are all, in Austen’s own words, “pictures of life in country villages,” but the details reflect the influence of the great social changes.
C

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
