Growing up on the Guanzhong Plain, He Jing didn't start mountaineering until 18. Her first climb, in 2006, was in the Qinling Mountains, and it sparked a passion for the sport.
In 2012, feeling sad for the loss of her grandmother, He attempted her first mountain over 5,000 meters — Mount Siguniang in Sichuan province. The experience provided her with a sense of peace and relief. "As I approached the summit (顶峰) and saw the rosy light on the snow, I found peace and a release from my inner confusion," she recalled.
Since then, He has been devoted to climbing high-altitude peaks. She summited her first 8,000-meter peak, Mount Cho Oyu, in 2016, using just one bottle of oxygen. Realizing she could handle the extreme altitude (海拔), she decided to attempt future climbs without oxygen, a move partly motivated by cost savings. Climbing without oxygen carries significant risks due to the thin atmosphere at high altitudes. To prepare, He trained strictly, running at least five times a week, climbing 200 flights of stairs with a 20-kilogram load twice weekly, and using an oxygen-restricting mask to simulate high-altitude conditions.
"At altitudes above 8,000 meters, the human brain experiences extreme lack of oxygen, and the body becomes sleepy. I kept telling myself not to fall asleep, as I might never wake up again," she said. Her first successful summit without bottled oxygen came on Sept. 25, 2017, when she reached the top of Mount Manaslu in Nepal.
On Oct. 9 this year, she reached the summit of the 8,027-meter Mount Shishapangma in China's Xizang autonomous region, becoming the first person from China and the third woman in the world to scale all 14 of the world's peaks over 8,000 meters without the use of additional oxygen.
24. What motivated He to attempt her climbing in 2012?
A. Her enthusiasm for climbing.
B. Her desire to challenge herself.
C. Her sorrow for losing her grandmother.
D. Her determination to handle the extreme altitude.
25. How did He prepare herself for climbing without additional oxygen?
A. By running four or five times a week.
B. By training in high-altitude conditions.
C. By climbing stairs with loads regularly.
D. By wearing a mask with adequate oxygen.
26. Which of the following words best describe He?
A. Energetic and sociable. B. Determined and passionate.
C. Demanding and humble. D. Strong-willed and friendly.
27. What does He's experience tell us?
A. Look before you leap. B. More haste (匆忙), less speed.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

"Turn off, tune out and drop in." That's the message to customers at a Dutch digital detox (戒瘾) cafe who are paying for the privilege of leaving their phones at the door. The Offline Club, which began life in Amsterdam, offers an oasis (乐土) of calm and pause from the constant digital busyness of life lived through the black glass of a smartphone. It creates moments of quiet reflection, and encourages conversations with strangers instead of endless keyboard arguments hammered out 280 characters at a time.
With board games, a piano and books on hand, the idea is to swap recharging your device for refilling your soul, even for just a few hours. Aided by word spreading on social media, the club has already branched out to multiple cities across the Netherlands, and is now ready for an international launch.
"People love it: they tell us this is exactly what they've been waiting for; they can't believe it didn't exist already," says co-founder Ilya Kneppelhout. "A girl called Belinda who struggled with stress and anxiety told us she hadn't felt so at peace with herself in a year and a half."
Customers switch between time to themselves and time to connect. "People don't just pay to get rid of their phones — they're also paying to meet others," says Kneppelhout. "We live in quite an isolated world where we're more connected online, but in the physical world, it's hard to meet people."
He's already had a group of digital downtime followers in the UK, where Georgina Sturmer, who has worked with clients experiencing over-dependence on phones, points out another benefit of a switched-off society. "We are constantly at risk of having every word or image captured and shared," she says. "This sense of being endlessly photographed is something that has come with these devices being in our lives so much. Wouldn't it be great to feel safe knowing it doesn't matter if we're having a bad hair day, or don't really like our outfit?"
28. What can we know about the Dutch digital detox cafe?
A. It is the first cafe in Amsterdam.
B. Interaction among people is advocated.
C. Only black smartphones are allowed there.
D. Customers have to type 280 characters nonstop.
29. How did the cafe become more and more popular?
A. By media's advertising.
B. By netizens' commenting online.
C. By employees' handing out leaflets.
D. By customers' word-of-mouth promoting.
30. Why is Belinda mentioned in the third paragraph?
A. To show the effect of the cafe.
B. To explain the cause of her anxiety.
C. To stress the seriousness of her situation.
D. To introduce the problem of modern people.
31. What is Georgina Sturmer's attitude towards the cafe?
A. Ambiguous. B. Concerned. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
D
The science of why insects gather around lights at night has never been nailed down. Popular theories propose that moths and other insects navigate (导航) by the moon and mistake lamps for moonlight, or that the insects fly towards light to escape coming danger. Now researchers believe they have a more convincing answer: contrary to current theories, insects are not attracted to light from far away, but become trapped if they fly close to an artificial light source.
According to Dr Sam Fabian, study co-author and Imperial College London entomologist, moths and many other insects that fly at night evolved to tilt (倾斜) their backs to wherever is brightest. For hundreds of millions of years, this was the sky rather than the ground. The trick told insects which way was up and ensured they flew level. But then came artificial lighting. Moths found themselves tilting their backs to street lamps. This caused them to circle around the lamps endlessly, the insects trapped by their evolution.
Fabian and his colleagues filmed insect flight paths around lights in the lab. The videos reveal that time and again, moths and dragonflies turned their backs to artificial lights, which appeared to greatly change their flight paths. "If the light is above them, they might start orbiting it, but if it's behind them, they start tilting backwards and end up flying in circles or diving toward the ground."
Researchers have long warned that light pollution is a big driving force in the dramatic decline in insect populations. Moths and other insects that become trapped around lamps become easily caught by bats. The artificial lighting can also fool them into thinking it is daytime, causing them to bed down and skip a night's feeding.
There are, Fabian believes, helpful lessons from the research. "What this tells us is that the direction of artificial light matters. Could we change lighting environments not to trap insects? Because we're facing a massive decline in insects around the world, and artificial light at night is one of the factors that could potentially be leading to this decline," Fabian said.
32. What do the underlined words "nailed down" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Popularized widely. B. Discussed openly.
C. Defined accurately. D. Explored academically.
33. Fabian's study found that moths circle around the lamps endlessly because _____.
A. they can't keep their balance
B. they use improper flight attitudes
C. they lose track of which way is up
D. they are attracted to lights from far away
34. What is the significance of the research finding?
A. It may lead to better conservation of insects.
B. Natural enemies of insects will be got rid of.
C. Artificial lighting will be greatly reduced at night.
D. It may raise concerns about insects' eating behavior.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why insects lose their ability to fly at night.
B. Why artificial light and evolution trap insects.
C. How artificial light impacts insect populations.
D. How insects evolved distinct strategies of flight.

Jack was new to Woodberry Forest School this year. He carried a secret burden; a stutter (口吃) that often brought about laughter from his classmates. This made him very upset. Shy and reserved, Jack chose to fade into the background rather than draw attention to himself. He felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid of getting into trouble. Jack's science teacher, Katherine, a warm and caring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack's stutter and shyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class and how he would shy away when called upon to speak.
Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to embrace bravery and believe in his own abilities. Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of systematic methods to help him. She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence and creativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter. Whenever possible, Katherine was always ready to praise his efforts, always declaring, "You are so great!" Whenever Jack stumbled over his words, Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with the strength to continue. Day by day, Jack found himself speaking with greater confidence and fluency.
One day, Katherine announced that each student should give a presentation of a science project in front of the class. Jack's heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety surrounding him. How could he possibly stand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that they would laugh at him? As the presentation drew near, Jack's anxiety mounted. Then came the big day. He watched his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. They gave their presentations with confidence and went back to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waiting for his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting on pins and needles.

解析:W: This is Marcy Ardmore from Sladen Motors. Some automotive parts we ordered from your factory haven't arrived yet.
M: I'm sorry to hear that. We sent your order over a week ago, but the shipping company has been experiencing delays due to the bad weather, and the tracking emails they sent us don't contain enough detail to determine when the parts will arrive.
W: I see. Do you have contact information for the shipping company? I'd like to see what I can find out.
M: Yes, I can give you their phone number. But I'll also call them. Hopefully the more concerns they get, the more seriously they'll take the issue.
8. 答案:A
9. 答案:B

M: Well, I am tired. I had a terrible night's sleep because I kept waking up. It's been like that for a few months. I can't really focus in class sometimes as I'm so tired.
W: Sorry to hear that. Have you tried using one of the health and fitness trackers to track your sleep?
M: How would a sleep tracker help?
W: It monitors the quality of your sleep. Some trackers even measure air temperature, the amount of light and noise, and monitor how you breathe. And you'll get to know your sleep habits, so you can see what helps you sleep.
10. 答案:B
11. 答案:C
12. 答案:A

W: Yes, but the cleaners will need 2 days to make sure that the house is clean and tidy. Then the house will be available.
M: What date would it be possible to visit it?
W: The day after the renters leave the house.
M: OK. Would 1 o'clock be all right?
W: I'm afraid that I have a meeting at 12:30. I have available appointments at 10:15 and 3:00.
M: In that case, can we schedule the appointment for 10:15?
W: No problem, I'll book it into my schedule.
13. 答案:A
14. 答案:C
15. 答案:B
16. 答案:C
解析:W: Hello, Luke, tell me about your research. What inspired you?
M: I once noticed people queuing outside a shoe store to buy a new style of trainers. Then I came across an article in a magazine about the incredible number of shoes that are produced. That piece made me want to find out more.
W: So then you went to the event called Trainer Exchange?
M: Yeah. It's for people to buy and sell trainers. At this event, everyone had to hand over ten pounds just to get in!
W: And you interviewed someone, didn't you?
M: That's right — I started with a couple called Meg and Tyler. They had a stand, piled high with hundreds of pairs of trainers, all styles and colors. But what drew me to them was the fact that they were a couple in their thirties, and almost everyone else are teenagers.
W: And I know so many shoes are thrown away. Why is that?
M: There are lots of reasons. Shoes can look worn or a new style comes out. But above all, it's that there are so many cheap styles that start to fall apart in no time.
17. 答案:B
18. 答案:A
19. 答案:B
20. 答案:C
解析:M: Good morning. Well, as you know, the community gardens at Hadley Park aren't in the best shape, and although the local government has a budget to deal with some of the problems, we do need volunteers for other tasks. Um, first of all, don't worry about any litter you see lying about — one of the local schools has offered to help out with that as part of their own environmental project. The priority for you will be to give us a hand with the new wooden fencing — it needs constructing along parts of the bicycle track. You've probably also noticed that the pathways that come from the bicycle track are quite narrow, but the government will widen them later in the year. The other thing we're doing is getting rid of some of the foreign species that are growing in the gardens and putting back some native plants and trees. So, you'll be doing some digging for us and getting those into the ground. So, wear strong, waterproof boots; it's quite muddy at the moment, and your own gloves would also be advisable. Tools will be available and we'll also provide food and drink.

21. 答案:A
Learn about how the United Nations addresses issues ... and how you can support the Sustainable Development Goals." 故选A。
For security reasons, children under 5 years of age are not permitted on tour."
23. 答案:A

根据第二段中的"moths and many other insects... the insects trapped by their evolution."
34. 答案:A
What this tells us is that the direction of artificial light matters... could potentially be leading to this decline"可知,光污染是昆虫数量大幅度下降的主要推动力,研究发现人造光的方向对昆虫很重要,这启示我们改变夜间照明环境应是保护昆虫的一种方式。故选A。

Dear Ryan,
I hope this email finds you well. I have some thoughts on using AI for grading our English essays. I believe it's a promising approach that can provide us with more timely feedback. AI can analyze various aspects of our compositions to a certain extent, such as grammar and structure, which can help us correct our mistakes more rapidly.
However, I also think it would be beneficial if you could provide some personalized feedback, especially on the content and creativity of our essays. These are areas where AI might not be as reliable, and your insights would be invaluable in helping us improve our writing skills more effectively.
Thank you for considering my opinions.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
It was finally his turn. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation. Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
Paragraph 2:
When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine's, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance. No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn't just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.
