Global warming: islands in hot water
The Pacific Ocean covers around one third of the Earth’s surface. △Scattered across this ocean are thousands of islands. In recent years, the people of these islands have noticed tides getting higher and storms getting worse. And they wonder—is their world about to change? Sadly, the fact is that the islands in the Pacific, especially low-lying coral ones, are suffering the serious effects of global warming.
As global temperatures increase, so do sea levels. Increasing temperatures cause ice sheets and glaciers at the North and South Poles to melt, releasing additional water into the ocean. Warm water also takes up more room than cool water, so as the ocean warms, sea levels rise further. Scientists expect sea levels worldwide may rise by 0.6 to 1.3 metres or more by 2100 if the planet continues to warm.
ice sheet(术语)冰原;冰盖
On the Pacific Islands, the most obvious sign of rising sea levels is that at high tide, water moves further inland to flow into houses and over roads. In fact, beaches or even whole islands are disappearing: five of the Solomon Islands have already vanished beneath the waves since 1947! Increasing sea levels also contaminate the islands’ freshwater supplies.
in·land adv.
When salty seawater seeps through the ground and gets into wells, the water becomes useless for drinking and
irrigation. Besides, growing sea levels interfere with some islands’ natural reshaping processes. Usually, waves gradually remove sand from one side of an island and dump new sand on the other side.
interfere with sth.
Unfortunately, however, rising waves accelerate the process, and this certainly causes problems for anyone living on the side that is being washed away.
Meanwhile, increasing global temperatures can have disastrous consequences in other ways. Extreme temperatures generate extreme rainfall patterns. Consequently, the islands go without life-sustaining rainfall for months, leading to crop failure and reduced freshwater reserves.
go without (sth)没有…
Then suddenly too much comes at once, and precious soil and homes are washed away by the floods. For example, on the hilly Cook Islands, storms have given rise to landslides that carry islanders’ homes down the hillsides. Additionally, the annual tropical cyclones are becoming stronger and happening more frequently, resulting in more severe flooding and landslides.
What is more, as the ocean warms, many coral reefs, which act as natural barriers and are home to a rich diversity of ocean species, are dying. Heat and extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere hurt the corals that build the reefs. Without healthy reefs, fish move away, and the islanders have less to eat.
act as/like sth充当;起作用
hurt对…有不良影响,have a bad effect on sb/sth
Despite the challenges, the islanders are not giving up without a fight. For many island communities, fighting climate change is not a choice; it is a matter of survival. They are working with scientists and learning to protect their homes from flooding and storm surges by building sea walls from old bits of coral reefs.
surge(风、水等) 突然的涌动 bit 小块儿
They are cutting down fewer trees, since trees hold onto soil. They are also planting mangrove trees to protect the
coastal areas. To keep the damaging salt away from their crops, they are growing crops in containers. They are looking for crops that do not mind salty water. Hopefully, they can find a way to stay on their islands, at least for a while.
However, some islanders have made a life-changing decision—moving away from the ocean. It is by no means easy as the ocean has been part of their lives for generations. An entire village on the island of Vanua Levu in Fiji abandoned their coastal homes to move up into the hills. Fortunately, they could begin a new life: buying land, building new houses and growing pineapples.
Vanua Levu /vɑːˌnuːə ˈlevuː/瓦努阿岛 Fiji /ˈfiːdʒiː/斐济
Some miss their old life by the sea, but at least the hills provide refuge from the rising sea, and they are still together. Many of those whose islands have no hills are looking for homes on new islands, or even in new countries. Most do not want to leave, but with the ocean moving in, they feel they have no choice.
move in (on sb/sth)从四面八方逼近;进逼
No matter what solutions the islanders develop, their islands are still in hot water. Global warming requires not only islanders to fight back. After all, we are living in a human community with a shared future. Maybe we can take a lesson from the ocean. Melting ice in the Arctic makes higher waves in Fiji because all the oceans are connected—there are no walls between them.
fight back (against sb/sth)奋力抵抗;还击
Change one, change all. If we need to tackle the problem of climate change, we will have to work together as one.
A.Write a summary of the science magazine article. Use the following questions to help you.
• What are the effects of global warming on the Pacific Islands?
• What efforts are the islanders making to save their homes and lives?
The islands in the Pacific Ocean are suffering from the serious effects of global warming. The rise in global temperatures causes sea levels to rise, resulting in high
tide water moving further inland. Moreover, the rising sea interferes with some islands’ natural reshaping processes and creates problems for people who live on the side that is being washed away. Extreme temperatures create extreme rainfall patterns. Long droughts affect crops and freshwater supplies, followed by heavy rainfall that washes away soil and homes.
Heat and extra carbon dioxide make many coral reefs disappear, removing natural barriers and an important food source. The islanders are not giving up against global warming without a fight. Some islanders have made the life-changing decision to move away from the ocean.
Some move up into the hills, while others look for homes on new islands, or even in new countries. However, global warming concerns not only islanders as all the oceans are connected, so we must all work together to tackle the problem.
B. What effects of global warming have you witnessed or read about? What could you do to help solve this problem?
I read that global warming poses risks to the survival of animal species on land and in the ocean. As temperatures climb, animal habitats are threatened by forest fires, floods and melting ice. Habitat disruption damages ecosystems that have evolved for millennia but are unable to adapt to the sudden climate change.
climb(温度、国家的货币等) 上升;增值;升值
This leads to food shortages, among other things. Some species are able to relocate and survive, but others cannot. For example, the polar bear may be a strong swimmer, but as the ice continues to melt, it must swim further and further to locate its prey, which means its chances of finding food are reduced and it may starve. It has adapted to cold climates, so where will it go when all the ice is gone?
among other things/places/factors除了其他东西/地方/因素
Trying to reduce the impact of global warming on animal habitats may be an enormous personal goal, but every one of us can contribute to solving the problem. We can reduce our carbon footprint by only eating seasonal fruit and vegetables. We can ride a bike or walk more instead of calling a taxi. Volunteering for conservation activities in the community can also help.
Though these actions may appear small, with everyone’s involvement, many small actions, when added up,can have a meaningful impact.
in·volve·ment (in/with sth)/ɪnˈvɒlvmənt/ 参与;加入;插手,=participation;耗费时间;投入;沉迷
add (sth.) up把…
Read the title again and analyse the rhetorical device used in the title.
The author uses a pun in the title. A pun refers to the clever or humorous use of a word or phrase that has more than one meaning, or of words that have different meanings but sound the same. Here “in hot water” creates the image that the islands are being flooded by warmer and rising sea water caused by the climbing temperatures of the Earth and suggests that the islanders are suffering a lot. Not only does it make the language vivid, but also evokes readers’ concern for the problem.
Read paragraph 1 and analyse the rhetorical device used in the following sentence.
And they wonder—is their world about to change?
This is a rhetorical question. A rhetorical question is a question that requires no reply, either because the answer is obvious or because the person asking the question already knows the answer. Rhetorical questions are generally used to persuade readers, make them think or direct their attention to an important topic. In the above sentence, the author uses the rhetorical question to attract readers’ attention and lead them to think about the problem of climate change.
