Whether (无论) you are a dog person or a cat person, did you notice how different dogs look compared with cats?
Cats have different sizes, different colors, different fur patterns, and different head shapes. However, they still all look like members of the same kind.
There are fewer differences among cats compared with dogs. Corgis are short-legged, with long and strong bodies. Greyhounds are tall, thin and fit, and leggy. Mastiffs are short-haired fighters that can weigh over 45 kilograms.
Why are there such huge differences among dogs? And why are cats so much more similar? Well, it's all because of their jobs.
Both cats and dogs began living with humans long before there were different breeds (品种). Historical records show that dog domestication (驯化) first appeared about 15,000 years ago. And cats' domestication happened about 10,000 years ago.
As time went on, people realized that dogs could do different jobs. For certain needs, people began shaping dogs differently. They picked two dogs with the traits (特点) they loved and let them "start a family." Over generations (代), these chosen traits became stronger. For example, herding goats (放牧山羊) in mountain areas needed a different type of dog from herding sheep on farms.
Cats, however, did a perfect job in their shapes and sizes. So their owners didn't need to change them too much.

2. What causes dogs to be so different?

How much do you know about whales, a kind of fantastic animals? They are huge, beautiful, and interesting animals on Earth. Are they fish? Although they look like fish and their homes are in the sea, in fact, they aren't fish. Let's learn more about them.
It's amazing to think how big whales are. Blue whales are the largest among all kinds of whales. They are also the biggest animals on Earth. Some of them are more than 33 meters long, and each of them weighs about 150 - 180 tons. A blue whale is even heavier than 24 elephants. A new baby blue whale weighs as much as a big elephant. The blue whale also has the largest heart in the world. It can be as heavy as 180 kg. Whales feed on sea life. Some whales eat seals and fish. Another interesting fact is that whales must come to the surface of the water to take in air. So they often jump out of the water.
Though whales need to take in air, they can't stay on beaches for a long time. Beaches are not safe places for them. They need to stay in the sea. For whales, the mistake of landing on beaches is dangerous. They may lose their lives.
Some kinds of whales are in danger because people catch them for meat, fat, and oil. Whale parts are sold to make things like candles and soap. We should try our best to protect whales. Stopping the killing of whales and fighting ocean pollution are two useful ways to protect them. When you see a whale on the beach, try to save it.

As a tree surgeon (树木修整专家), Jeffrey Watson can treat trees quickly. But he can do more than that. He can skillfully turn wood into amazing pieces of artworks, from animals to historical carvings (雕刻品).
Art plays an important part in Jeffrey's life as his mum is a great painter. Jeffrey studied art and drama at first, but as a lover of the outdoors, he later became a tree surgeon. When he was working, he soon showed an interest in wood carving.
He started with small projects: a tiny chair and some wooden mushrooms. Then he moved on to more elaborate (精巧的) things, like a bird. “Once, a tree fell down at a school, and they wanted someone to turn it into an artwork,” he said. “I gave it a try and carved a squirrel. It turned out so well that the school asked me to make another carving not long after.”
Soon, more people began to notice Jeffrey's artworks. They started to ask him to make special wooden carvings for them. He practiced a lot, and his skills improved a lot. Later, he got so many orders that he finally made wood carving his job.
Now, Jeffrey spends most of his time on carving. Wildlife is a common subject in his works. He works fast, and he can finish a carving for sale in just 30 minutes. You know that funny emoji? A small animal stands up straight, paws down, eyes wide open, looking like it has no idea what is happening. That is the meerkat. They're smart and hard-working animals.
Meerkats live in southern Africa. They live in big groups of 20 to 50 meerkats, like one big family. One special female (雌性) guides the group and gives birth to babies. Other meerkats help take care of the young, find food, and keep everyone safe.
One of their most amazing jobs is being guards (卫兵). While the group looks for food, some meerkats take turns to stand on a rock, using their tails to help stay up. Dark marks around their eyes work like sunglasses, helping them see danger far away. If they see different dangers, they make different loud sounds. Some calls tell all to run and hide (藏) under the ground, while others may remind the group to fight back. This teamwork keeps them safe.
However, care doesn’t stop there. After babies are born, the whole group helps. Some meerkats act as babysitters (保姆). Others are teachers. They catch scorpions and remove the stingers in front of the young. This way, the little ones learn how to eat scorpions in a safe way. Everyone has a job, and together, they can live in dry grasslands and deserts (沙漠).
1.Where do meerkats live?

2.What helps meerkats see danger far away?

Prairie dogs (草原犬鼠) are not true dogs at all. They are not big animals, only about the size of a rabbit. You can see them in highland and cold places, like the west of Sichuan. Although they are not dogs, they bark (叫) like dogs. They get the name from their dog-like barking sound.
Like humans, prairie dogs live with their family. When young babies are born, both dad and mum play a role in taking care of them. Those in the same group work, play and sleep together, like building their burrows (洞穴) and lying in the sun.
Each group lives in its own burrows. Prairie dogs use their sharp claws (爪子) to dig their burrows. They kick the dirt out with their back legs. Then they start to build some “rooms” in the burrows. The “rooms” have different uses (用途). Some can keep them warm in winter. They also have special “rooms” to store food. Some underground “rooms” protect them from animals that might want to hurt them.
Prairie dogs "kiss" one another by touching their front teeth. For them, this is a way to tell if another prairie dog is part of their group or not. They will attack other prairie dogs that are not part of their group.
1.Why do prairie dogs get their name? (no more than 6 words)
________________________________________________________________
2.What do prairie dogs in the same group do together? (no more than 6 words)
