① The Maori arrived in New Zealand from Polynesian (波利尼西亚) islands about a thousand years ago. They were the first people to live in New Zealand.
② In the late 18th century, Europeans came to live in New Zealand. At that time, the population of the Maori was maybe 250, 000 in New Zealand. Over the next one hundred years, wars and disease killed many Maori people. By the end of the 19th century, there were only about 40, 000 Maori people left. During this time, the Maori also lost much of their land to the Europeans. Many of them were afraid that they might lose their traditions and language too, but this did not happen.
③ Today the Maori population is increasing. There are about 500, 000 Maori people in New Zealand. Most live like other New Zealanders, but they are keeping the Maori language and traditions alive. There are now Maori radio and television stations. Many schools teach in the Maori language. Nearly one half of Maori language speakers are 25 years old or younger.
④ Maori culture is also alive and well. At the center of Maori culture is the “marae”. This is a special place for ceremonies and meetings. Today the number of marae in New Zealand is increasing. Many of the new marae are in the cities. Now people in the cities can meet and learn about their Maori traditions.
⑤ Today most New Zealand cities have Maori festivals each year. Among festival activities are competitions in speaking, dancing and singing. Children practice for months. Then all the Maori in the area arrive to watch the competitions and see who wins.
⑥ The Maori have gone through hard times. Today they live a comfortable, modern life. They keep their cultural traditions alive, because they have passed and are passing them on to their children.
5. When did the Maori first arrive in New Zealand?
A. Around 11th century. B. Around 14th century. C. Around 16th century. D. Around 18th century.
6. What happened to the Maori during the 19th century?
A. They owned more land. B. They lost their language. C. They left New Zealand. D. They had a smaller population.
7. What’s the theme of the passage?
A. Art. B. Culture. C. Travel. D. Technology
8. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. ①/②/③④⑤⑥ B. ①/②③④⑤⑥ C. ①②/③④⑤/⑥ D. ①②③/④⑤/⑥
A 6. D 7. B 8. C

“Mr. Smith, what is the difference between a period (句号) and a comma (逗号)?” I was a young teacher in a middle school English class. I hated these grammar rules and hardly understood them myself, even though I was a writer. As I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different rules about commas, he wouldn’t remember them.
I was also in no mood for a long lesson. My mom had died just a few short weeks ago. I missed her so much, feeling half-dead inside. All I wanted to do was stay in bed, but my young family was struggling to get by and I knew I had to take every day of work I could.
I looked at the textbook again but couldn’t read it because my eyes were so watery.
Suddenly, however, I got an idea.
“A period is the end of a sentence or a thought,” I said. “A comma, on the other hand, is just a brief pause (暂停) before the sentence continues on.” When I finished saying this, my heart suddenly felt lighter. I smiled and thought of my mom continuing on in a place much brighter and happier than the one I was in now.
That little moment of light helped me as I continued to miss my mom over the months and years to come. Recently I remembered it once again when I saw this quote in a book I was reading: “Death is not a period, only a comma.”
Our lives are a story that goes on forever. Our time here is only a part of it.
9. The writer starts the passage by ________.
A. raising a question B. expressing feelings C. explaining reasons D. giving an example
10. Why did the writer not want to teach a long lesson that day?
A. Because he didn’t like working for that teacher. B. Because he hadn’t read the textbook yet.
C. Because he was sad about his mom’s death. D. Because he couldn’t wait to see his young family.
11. What does the underlined phrase “get by” mean?
A. to live an easy and rich life B. to be able to overcome difficulties
C. to have a positive life attitude D. to face challenges in a relaxing way
12. What does the writer mean by “Death is not a period, only a comma.”?
A. Death is the end. B. Life goes on after death. C. Quoting is not important. D. We all need breaks.
A 10. C 11. B 12. B

根据第二段“All I wanted to do was stay in bed, but my young family was struggling to get by and I knew I had to take every day of work I could.”
根据倒数第二段“Recently I remembered it once again when I saw this quote in a book I was reading: ‘Death is not a period, only a comma.’”及“Our lives are a story that goes on forever. Our time here is only a part of it.”
①Planting trees can cut down CO2 in the air, but just doing this isn’t enough to deal with climate change. Now one way discussed widely is carbon capture (碳捕获). It refers to the technology that can protect the earth against climate change by cutting down CO2 in the air.
②Carbon capture technology is used to collect CO2 that is given off by factories. For example, it can be fitted to coal-burning power stations and factories to capture the CO2, before it is given off by factories. The captured CO2 can then be liquefied (液化) and stored underground. Besides, the technology can also be used to collect the CO2 that has already gone into the air.
③Then how can we deal with the CO2 we capture? Proper utilization (利用) is truly important. It can not only help create markets for this new technology, but also make it cheaper for companies to use. Nowadays, CO2 is used in greenhouses to grow vegetables. CO2 can even be used to make useful products, such as plastics, building materials, and paints.
④Carbon capture is considered to be quite helpful. However, there are many problems on the way. There’s 50 billion tons of carbon going out to the air from cars and factories every year. But even a great number of carbon capture machines now can capture only a few dozens of tons of it. The thickness of CO2 in the open air is about 300 times less than that in the power stations or factories, making it much less efficient to capture CO2. Because of this, carbon capture machines are very expensive today. So, it’s hard to make a real difference in fighting climate change now. But it will be improved quickly and will become cheaper and more efficient. It is like the mobile phones which were expensive and difficult to use 20 years ago. But now mobile phones have been greatly improved.
13. What can carbon capture technology be used for?
A. Helping protect trees. B. Cutting down CO2 in the air.
C. Studying the condition of the air. D. Checking signs of climate change.
14. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The ways in which the technology works. B. The advantage of the technology.
C. The secrets behind the technology. D. The development of the technology.
15. What can we know from the passage?
A. The market for CO2 products is growing fast.
B. Carbon capture technology hasn’t been widely used.
C. The cost of fixing the carbon capture machines is high.
D. There is more CO2 in the open air than that in factories.
16. Why does the writer mention the example of mobile phones?
A. To express the personal interest in mobile phones.
B. To show carbon capture technology will be improved.
C. To raise a new topic of how technology influences our life.
D. To advise readers to take an interest in the development of technology.
B 14. A 15. B 16. B

故选A。
根据“However, there are many problems on the way ... So, it’s hard to make a real difference in fighting climate change now.”
根据“But it will be improved quickly and will become cheaper and more efficient. It is like the mobile phones which were expensive and difficult to use 20 years ago. But now mobile phones have been greatly improved.”

根据“People say the real culture of Beijing lies in the culture of hutong and siheyuan.….true it is!”
根据“If you want to...(true) know the real life of Beijingers”可知,这里需要用副词修饰动词“know”,结合所给单词true,其副词形式truly表示“真正地”。
根据“hutongs are narrow (狭窄的) streets which...(form) by lines of siheyuan”可知,“which...(form) by lines of siheyuan”是定语从句,修饰先行词“streets”,streets和form之间是被动关系,表示“街道被四合院形成”,句子时态是一般现在时,所以用一般现在时的被动语态,其结构为“am/is/are +动词的过去分词”,which指代streets,be动词用are, form的过去分词是formed。故填are formed。
根据“The word ‘hutong’ comes from Mongolian and...(mean) ‘water well’”可知,and连接两个并列的谓语动词,前面“comes”是第三人称单数形式,句子时态是一般现在时,所以mean也用第三人称单数形式means。
故填its。
根据“If the Forbidden City is...symbol of the Chinese royal(皇家的) family”可知,这里表示“一个象征”,symbol是可数名词,以辅音音素开头,所以用不定冠词a修饰。故填a。
根据“They are like...(museum) of folk custom”可知,主语They指代hutongs,是复数,所以museum也要用复数形式museums。
根据“Every hutong has its story...(tell)”可知,这里用动词不定式作后置定语,修饰名词story,表示“要讲述的故事”,所以用to tell。故填to tell。
根据“Many famous operas and dramas are based...the theme of ‘hutong life’”可知,“be based on”是固定短语,意为“以……为基础,基于”,所以这里用on。故填on。
根据“A visit to hutongs by day plus a drama by the Beijing People’s Art Theatre in the evening will help you...(well) understand this basic part of life in Beijing”可知,这里表示通过两种活动能更深入地了解北京生活,用well的比较级better,表示“更好地”。
Recently, I started to use an app to keep a record of my running. Each run I wanted to go a little farther, run a little faster and burn more calories (卡路里). Last night I finished an 8.3 km run in 46 minutes and burnt 468 calories. In comparison, my run two days ago was 8.6 km in 46 minutes with 483 calories burnt. This inner self-comparison left me feeling disappointed. I became so focused (专注的) on the numbers that I forgot to consider what I achieved.
These tiny differences in numbers kept me away from the bigger picture: how did I actually feel after completing my most recent run? Well, honestly, I was completely tired out. What good is running to beat your top score if you don’t feel on top?
We should exercise for the purpose of building our confidence. And working out harder and faster may serve that purpose. But confidence building comes with being able to do more in our day-to-day life, experiencing less pain and more freedom in movement, and feeling good after a workout. Fitness should help us with our quality (质量) of life, the ability to sleep, good memory, among other things. Fitness should not just come with the eagerness for the success in numbers.
In our busy lives, we only have limited time for fitness. When we do physical exercise, we should value what feels good over what looks or sounds good. Sometimes what serves us and our health is coming home and doing a light workout, like going on a short bike ride. Sometimes what serves us is simply going to sleep at 9:30 p.m. instead of forcing ourselves into a workout. Apps of this kind are a great way for us to keep an eye on our health. But don’t read into the numbers to the point where you lose out on feeling proud that you are taking care of yourself. So my advice is: when you do physical exercise, make sure you feel good about yourself over feeling good about the numbers.
41. Why did the writer start to use the app?
____________________
42. What did the writer forget to consider when he became too focused on the numbers?
____________________
43. According to the writer, what should be our purpose of doing exercise?
____________________
44. When you do physical exercise, which do you think is more important, feeling good about yourself or feeling good about the numbers? Why? Write 30 words or more.
____________________
41. To keep a record of his running.
42. He forgot to consider what he achieved.
43. Building our confidence.
44. Feeling good about yourself is more important than feeling good about the numbers. Because exercise should improve our quality of life and the ability to sleep, good memory, among other things.

5 When did the Maori first arrive in New Zealand?
A. Around 11th century. B. Around 14th century. C. Around 16th century. D. Around 18th century.
6. What happened to the Maori during the 19th century?

7. What’s the theme of the passage?
A. Art. B. Culture. C. Travel. D. Technology
8 What would be the best structure of the passage?

Suddenly however, I got an idea.
Our lives are a story that goes on forever Our time here is only a part of it.
