When the British rock band Suede rolled into the Shanghai Stadium for their concert, they were met with a red pennant(锦旗), on which golden letters in both Chinese and English read, “Sending our deeper love to Suede”. It was the first time for Suede to receive such a gift from fans. But actually in China, pennants, called jinqi, featuring gold characters on red velvet(丝绒), are symbols of honor and respect with ancient roots.
In ancient China, generals used flags to command their armies. Commanders rewarded soldiers with flags for acts of bravery. However, during the Song Dynasty, society favored scholars(书生,学者)over generals(将军). The Song emperors began to reward excellent scholars with jinqi. Since then, jinqi have become a symbol of recognition for people’s achievements.
Nowadays, walls decorated with jinqi from patients are a common sight in Chinese hospitals. Such displays are also seen in police stations and even schools.
While there are many other common ways to express thanks, like giving gifts and red envelopes, jinqi are regarded as more noble. People can also write thank-you letters but the language used may be improper. Words on jinqi, however, follow a set pattern, which are always acceptable.
The popularity of jinqi is also because of their prices. A young woman named Tina bought her jinqi for only 30 yuan. On Taobao, even the high-end jinqi cost less than 300 yuan.
What people write on jinqi has gradually changed over the years, especially when younger generations are adopting the trend. “The content has become more informal,” says Zhang, a jinqi maker. A vlog in 2023 showed a young patient presenting her eye doctor with a jinqi with a single number “6”—Internet slang for “awesome”. The doctor accepted the jinqi with a broad smile. Clearly, he was amused by its modern content.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The origin of jinqi.
B. Legends about jinqi.
C. When jinqi became widely used in China.
D. How jinqi became symbols of honor and respect.
30. What are the reasons why sending jinqi is popular in China?
①It doesn’t cost a lot of money.
②It is considered to be more noble.
③The content of jinqi is usually proper.
④It is the most sincere expression of thanks.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People no longer feel honored to receive jinqi nowadays.
B. Sending jinqi with formal content is considered out of date.
C. The young have brought new life to the tradition of giving jinqi.
D. The tradition of giving jinqi has been changed by jinqi makers.
32. In which column of the newspaper can you probably read the text?
A. History B. Culture C. Education D. Entertainment

Newton was a quiet boy. Having lost his father before he was born, he grew up with his grandparents. At 17, soon after he finished schooling, his mother decided that he would be trained to take care of their family farm. But instead of watching sheep, young Newton would spend his time making small tools. His head teacher saw the genius in him and asked his mother to send him to the university. Newton set out for Cambridge in June, 1661, and began his career in scientific research.
Newton was always trying to understand and explain a lot of things in nature. To test a question about colors, he would stare at the Sun with one eye until all the colors changed. As a result, he had to stay in the dark for several days before his eye returned to normal. Newton was the first to show us that white light is made up of colors mixed together. He was also the first person to understand the rainbow and explain how it forms.
A story goes like this: One day, an apple fell.on Newton’s head, and it was then that Newton realized that the apple fell towards the Earth and didn’t go anywhere else. He thought to himself, “How did this happen?” After doing some experiments, he later knew all objects(物体)always fall towards the Earth’s center because the Earth attracts them. He realized that every object in the universe attracts every other object towards it. Then Newton discovered the law of universal gravitation.
Newton was an English physicist, mathematician and astronomer. Because of the significant work Newton has done, he is widely considered as one of the greatest scientists of all time.
