Upon graduation from the University of Washington’s first Professional Actor Training Program, he joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe, a politically-charged street theatre company. Here, he met Paul Binder, a like-minded juggler (玩杂耍的人) looking to start a new project. The two spent a few months doing a second job to help pay the bills — Christensen found work on an apple orchard (苹果园), and Binder drove a taxi — then, the two met up in London and started what was to be a “great adventure.” Christensen and Paul started a juggling tour of Europe, which went as far as Istanbul and ended in Paris. After a year and a half on the road, the mobile lifestyle had made them extremely tired, and they returned to the US. Then in 1976, Paul decided to create in New York a circus modeled on what they had seen in Paris. Michael joined him in this new project, and on July 18, 1977, the Big Apple Circus was born. By early 1985, the Big Apple Circus had grown larger than Christensen had ever imagined. With special performances offered for those with disabilities, it was among the most open-minded circuses in the world. The production was a not-for-profit (非营利的) operation — one set on providing affordable entertainment to Americans. But the Big Apple Circus’ most enjoyable work was yet to come, and Christensen would be right in the middle of it. As the Big Apple Circus continued to take off in 1986, Christensen set up a new project, the Clown Care Unit: “a group of professional clowns trained broadly in hospital procedures, circus skills, and artistic creativity.” Working in teams of two, the clowns would visit pre-approved patients at children’s hospitals and brighten their day with 15-to 20-minute performances. Christensen’s efforts have come with another positive result: since establishing his Clown Care Unit in 1986, a lot of other like-minded efforts have popped up across the world. 41. What can we infer about Christensen’s job in San Francisco Mime Troupe? A. It was demanding. B. It was high-risk. C. It was low-paid. D. It was boring. 42. Why did Christensen and Paul return to the US? A. They experienced a failure in Paris. B. They were tired of being on the move. C. They decided to create a circus in New York. D. They found a sponsor for their juggling tour in the US. 43. What made the Big Apple Circus the most open-minded? A. Charging a low ticket price. B. Opening up a comment channel. C. Establishing units all over the world. D. Designing performances for the disabled. 44. What should the Clown Care team do before their performance? A. Require approval for the patients’ attendance. B. Receive training in hospital medicine. C. Work in pairs for preparation. D. Study at an art school. 45. What is the text mainly about? A. A juggling tour in Europe. B. An unforgettable experience. C. A circus in New York. D. A life story of Michael Christensen. Passage C Can Humor Help Teaching and Learning? For years teachers have tried ways of bringing humor into the classroom to keep kids engaged, and Mary Kay Morrison, the author of the book*Using Humor to Maximize Learning, says brain research shows that it’s a good idea. “It improves learning and strengthens memories by gaining students’ attention and then helps them absorb the information,” she says. She notes that students surveyed on the topic say teachers who use humor are much more effective at inspiring them, engaging them, reducing their anxiety (焦虑), exciting their interest in learning and developing positive teacher-student relationships. Experts say, however, that it has to be carried out properly to be effective. “A classroom without learning is a failed one, but the atmosphere can be playful and even joyful,” says Sean O’Brien, an award-winning English teacher at West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch, CA. , who has gained attention for his humor. “It probably shouldn’t be just any fun the way an amusement park is.” Morrison agrees but says it should be used often, and any teacher can try it. “It should be done intentionally (有意地) with thought, but all types of teachers can use humor effectively if they work at it.” She notes that humor gets students’ attention because it typically involves the unexpected, which “stimulates the attention center of the brain” which, in turn, increases the likelihood of information recollection. Then, she says, humor actually activates more of the brain than many other activities in a classroom. So, a student who is just listening, for instance, is using one part of the brain but the humor will add to the stimulation. Morrison notes that it also has other, less obvious benefits — reducing stress for the teacher and the students, increasing creativity and energy in the classroom and creating and improving the atmosphere or culture. “Humor is a social lubricant (润滑剂),” she says. “It promotes trust, communication and goodwill, but must be done with thought and care.” 46. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Brain research. B. Using humor in teaching. C. Gaining students’ attention. D. A positive teacher-student relationship. 47. What does Sean O’Brien think about classroom humor? A. It shouldn’t be overdone. B. It makes the teacher popular. C. It shouldn’t be carried out in science class. D. It brings as much fun as an amusement park. 48. What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A. Tools to activate more of the brain. B. The importance of getting students’ attention. C. The way that humor increases effectiveness in study. D. The reason the attention center of the brain works. 49. Which statement will the author probably disagree with? A. Humor in the classroom helps to keep students involved. B. Humor should be done by teachers unintentionally. C. Humor can give more stimulation to students D. Humor can promote trust, communication and goodwill. 50. What is a suitable title for the text? A. How can students focus on study? B. Can humor help teaching and learning? C. What can playful learning bring students? D. Is there a way to improve classroom atmosphere? Passage D We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in anything. To achieve your goal, you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently (坚持地). Persistence is the course you need to take. When you change your expectancy from instantly to persistently, you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have. Time works against those who live instantly. Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn’t happen instantly, people move on to the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure. Persistent people have the advantage of time. It allows them to step back, observe and assess the progress of the goals they are pursuing. Some things take longer to develop; some just need to be left there for a while to find their own ways. When you live instantly you gain and lose instantly. Many times, you do not know how you got there or how to get back because it is not repeatable. When you live persistently you learn how things work, how to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have more than enough time. Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take time to develop your abilities to reach your goals. Do not get discouraged just because your success is not instant. Celebrate each step along the way. People who live instantly don't take time to appreciate what they have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly. You must be grateful for the time it takes to reach your goals. Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there. 51. Why do people who live instantly fail in many things? A. They want greater efficiency. B. They fail to stick to their goals. C. They often change their lifestyles. D. They tend to pursue higher targets. 52. Which of the following is the author’s suggestion? A. Setting practical goals. B. Making detailed plans. C. Focusing on the journey. D. Receiving a good education. 53. According to the text, persistent people ________. A. will focus more on the result B work slower than instant people C. will get rewarded for their efforts D. ignore what they have done 54. What can be inferred about time from the text? A. It is a limited resource for everyone. B. It favors those who pursue goals persistently. C. It accelerates the success of instant-living people. D. It is often wasted by persistent people in observation. 55. What’s the best title for the text? A. Live Persistently B. Pursue Your Goals C. Appreciate Your Abilities D. My childhood was filled with arts, crafts (手工) and music, and every day was an exciting adventure of creation. Somewhere along the way, however, I lost touch with my creative self. At 21, I landed a job at a big insurance company out of my business degree. I would go to the office, sit at my desk and repeat the same work five days a week 9 to 5. The days were long and tedious. Working this way for one year was painful enough, let alone a lifetime. Before long I decided to make a change. One thing I had developed an interest in was sewing, so I took a sewing course at a community college. It was only a five-week course but it awakened my interest and got my confidence up. As I dreamt bigger, I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. I attended classes two nights a week. Although exhausting, it gave me energy, enthusiasm and happiness. As it became clearer that fashion was what I wanted to do full time, the reality of my day-to-day work at the insurance company became harder. I felt bored. No energy, no motivation and zero fulfilment (满足感). I knew I needed to make a bigger change. After struggling for quite a while, I made a difficult decision—leaving my job and studying my design course full time. Two years later I got my diploma. The last few years have been exciting because I’ve been following my heart to do what I love. Today I am living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand. Sometimes it’s hard to make a change, but I’m so glad I set the wheels of change in motion with that very small first step because it has led me to where I am today. 66. 【答案】41. C 42. B 43. D 44. C 45. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章探讨幽默能否助力教学,指出其可提升学习效果、改善师生关系等,但需恰当且有意使用,还能缓解压力、促进信任。 【46题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段开头提到“It improves learning and strengthens memories by gaining students’ attention and then helps them absorb the information. (它通过吸引学生的注意力,帮助他们吸收信息,从而提高学习效果,加强记忆。)”结合前文第一段中“bringing humor into the classroom to keep kids engaged (将幽默带入课堂,让孩子们保持专注)”和“brain research shows that it’s a good idea (大脑研究表明,这是个好主意。)”由此可知,“it”指代前文核心话题 ——“在教学中使用幽默”。故选B项。 【47题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段Sean O’Brien 提到““A classroom without learning is a failed one, but the atmosphere can be playful and even joyful,” says Sean O’Brien, an award-winning English teacher at West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch, CA. , who has gained attention for his humor. “It probably shouldn’t be just any fun the way an amusement park is.” (“一个没有学习的教室是失败的,但气氛可以是有趣的,甚至是快乐的,” Sean O’Brien说,他是加利福尼亚州史蒂文森牧场西牧场高中的一位获奖英语老师,因其幽默而受到关注。“它可能不应该像游乐园那样充满乐趣。”)”可知,Sean O’Brien强调课堂幽默需以学习为前提,不能像游乐园那样只追求无意义的乐趣,即“不应过度”。故选A项。 【48题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第五段“She notes that humor gets students’ attention because it typically involves the unexpected, which “stimulates the attention center of the brain” which, in turn, increases the likelihood of information recollection. Then, she says, humor actually activates more of the brain than many other activities in a classroom. So, a student who is just listening, for instance, is using one part of the brain but the humor will add to the stimulation. 根据第四段中““It should be done intentionally (有意地) with thought, but all types of teachers can use humor effectively if they work at it.” (“这应该是经过深思熟虑的,但如果努力的话,所有类型的教师都可以有效地运用幽默。”)”可推知,作者可能不同意的一种说法是幽默应该是老师无意中做出来的。故选B项。 【50题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章开篇以设问“Can Humor Help Teaching and Learning?” 引出话题,后续围绕“教学中使用幽默的好处、需注意的事项、作用机制”展开,始终紧扣该核心问题,提出可推知,文章最合适标题是“幽默能帮助教与学吗?”。故选B项。 Passage D We live in a world where we want everything instantly. A. will focus more on the result B. work slower than instant people C. will get rewarded for their efforts D. ignore what they have done 54. Treasure Every Opportunity 【答案】51. B 52. C 53. C 54. B 55. As I dreamt bigger I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. The last few years have been exciting because I’ve been following my heart to do what I love Today I am living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand. Sometimes it’s hard to make a change, but I’m so glad I set the wheels of change in motion with that very small first step because it has led me to where I am today. 66. What was the author interested in when she was a little girl? (no more than 10 words) 67. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean? (1 word) 68. Rejection is an inevitable part of life, and it doesn’t define your worth as a writer. Take J.K. Rowling, for instance. Before the world-famous Harry Potter series was published, she endured countless rejections from publishers. Her manuscript was turned down again and again, but she didn’t give up. Instead, she persevered and believed in her story. Eventually, her hard work paid off, and her books became a global phenomenon. As for suggestions, first, carefully read the feedback from the editors. They might have pointed out areas for improvement, like grammar mistakes, weak argumentation, or unclear structure. Second, seek advice from our English teachers. They have rich experience and can provide in-depth guidance. Third, read more articles in Highlight English to understand its style and requirements better. Remember, every rejection is a step closer to success. Keep writing, and I’m sure you’ll see your work published soon.
