“It’s not nice to hate,” Mom said as she finished cutting the onions. “Why don’t you like fractions?” she asked.
“I don’t understand them at all! I’m just not a clever girl.”
“Everyone learns at a different speed, Ella. You are a very smart girl.”
“I don’t even know why I have to learn them. What’s the point? I’m never going to need a fraction in my whole life.”
“Let’s not worry about fractions right now. Instead, would you like to help me make cookies?”
“Okay.” Ella said.
“Here. You put the ingredients in the pan and I will cook them.” Mom placed sugar, milk, peanut butter and some measuring cups close to the pan. “First, put one full cup of sugar into the pan.”
Ella gently pulled out a full cup of sugar and poured it into the pan.
“Good,” Mom said. “Now, I need a little more. I need three-fourths of a cup. That is more than half of the cup, but not all the way to the top. Fill it halfway first.” Ella filled the cup halfway full.
“Okay. Now, see that line a little way up? That is three-fourths of a cup. Add enough sugar until it reaches that line.”
Ella put a little more sugar into the cup until it reached the line.
“Great! Pour it into the pan. Next, we need one-half cup of milk. Here is the measuring cup. Fill it to the half cup line with milk.”
Ella slowly poured one-half cup of milk.
“Now I have to cook it for one and a half minutes. After that, all we need to do is to add one teaspoon of vanilla and one-half cup of peanut butter.” Mom turned to Ella.
“I see what you are doing. You are showing me I need to understand fractions,” Ella said with a smile.
Mom laughed. “And you were understanding! You just need a little more practice.”
“Okay. I understand now. Fractions are important. Without fractions, we wouldn’t be able to make cookies!”
Ella and Mom both laughed.

“My mother said, ‘If you really want to do something, you have to work very hard. And if you don’t give up, hopefully you’ll find a way.’ And I did. So let me say to all young people: follow your dreams, and follow my mother’s advice. And then you can succeed (成功), too. I hope you will take action to help save the wonderful animals in China.” said Dr. Jane Goodall, for the documentary (纪录片) film Jane showed in Chinese Arthouse cinemas on Oct. 17th, 2023.
Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934 and grew up in a seaside town. She became interested in animals and animal stories when she was young. However, most girls lived quiet lives at home at that time. When she was 10, she even dreamed of living in Africa. Jane was sure that, one day, she wanted to live with animals and write stories about them.
Jane worked as a waitress until she got enough money to travel to Africa. In 1957, Jane Goodall finally traveled there and soon met the well-known scientist Louis Leakey and began working for him as a helper. He later asked her to study a group of chimpanzees (黑猩猩) living by a lake in Tanzania. ①__________ People knew very little about wild chimpanzees at that time.
Jane spent many years studying chimpanzees in this area of Africa. It was not easy work. They were very shy and would run away whenever she came near. She learned to watch them from far away using binoculars. Over time, she slowly won their trust. She gave the chimpanzees human names such as David Graybeard, Flo and Fifi. Watching the chimpanzees, she got many findings. ②__________ They ate vegetables and fruits. But she found that they also ate meat. A few weeks later, she got an even more surprising finding. She saw chimpanzees make and use tools to help catch insects.
Jane said that each chimp acted in its own way, just as humans do. She saw chimps being happy, sad, angry, and loving—just as humans are. ③__________ Her work made many scientists think that their old ideas about the chimpanzees might be wrong.
④__________ Jane Goodall also writes many books for adults and children about wild chimpanzees. Her newest book called Hope for Animals and Their World tells about saving many kinds of animals in danger. If you are interested in her books, remember not to miss them!
47. In which part of the newspaper can we read this passage?

49. We can put the following sentence into ________.
Jane’s report surprised many people.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
50. What can we learn about Jane Goodall from the passage?

In need of some rest? You can now climb down 419 meters to have the deepest sleep below ground. The hotel called Deep Sleep, under the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales, is the world’s deepest hotel. Guests (客人) must journey down through a slate mine (板岩矿) to reach the hotel.
The hotel has four twin-bed cabins (小木屋) and a romantic grotto (洞穴) with a double bed. A night stay for two in a cabin costs 350 pounds while the price for two in the grotto is 550 pounds. And if you stay here alone, you will have to pay the price of two, too.
You can only book the hotel for a Saturday night through to Sunday morning and getting to your room is far from relaxing. You will have to complete a 45-minute walk into the mountains and at the end you’ll get a helmet (头盔), light, harness (安全带) and boots before going into the world’s largest and deepest slate mine.
The trip down into the mine includes miner stairwells (楼梯井), old bridges and a scramble (攀爬). It takes about 60 minutes, and once you complete the trip, you’ll arrive at a set of large steel doors. Welcome to Deep Sleep!
Then, try and relax for the evening with a free meal to enjoy at the picnic table. After that just head off to bed.
It’s also important to note it’s not exactly warm down there. It’s about 10℃, so it will feel the same as if you were camping outside.

Jane was sure that, one day, she wanted to live with animals and write stories about them.
Jane worked as a waitress until she got enough money to travel to Africa.
Watching the chimpanzees, she got many findings. ②__________ They ate vegetables and fruits. But she found that they also ate meat. A few weeks later, she got an even more surprising finding. She saw chimpanzees make and use tools to help catch insects.

八、阅读表达(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分。答案请控制在10个单词以内)
先通读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容,回答问题。
All guests must get up before 8 am for a hot drink and breakfast before starting the trip back up to ground level. And going up is always harder than coming down. Whatever, it sounds special.
