Using two fans he found at a market, the 15-year-old Hussam Al-Attar lit up his family’s tent. He and his family have been living in the tent since the start of Israel’s attack (袭击) on Gaza (加沙). His neighbors in the tent camp called him “Gaza’s Newton”.
“Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head, and we here are living in darkness, and rockets are falling on us, so I thought of making light, and did so,” Al-Attar said to Reuters.
The Al-Attar family put their tent next to a house, and the boy climbed onto the top of the house and set up two fans to charge batteries (给电池充电). Then, he linked (连接) the fans to wires (电线) in the house and lightbulbs (灯泡) in the tent to make light for his family. It took him a while to make it finally after he failed twice.
“I was very happy that I was able to make this because I helped my family and everyone here during this war.” Al-Attar told the media.
Al-Attar is still holding on to his dreams and hopes when this may be the most difficult time of his life. “I am very happy that people in this camp call me ‘Gaza’s Newton’, because I hope to become a scientist like Newton and make something that will be good for not only the people of the Gaza Strip, but the whole world.” he added.

We usually think fish can’t talk. But there are a lot of sounds under the ocean. In fact, scientists believe that all sea animals—at least 250,000 kinds—can “speak”. If we listen carefully when we are underwater, “we can hear animals all around us,” UK scientist Steve Simpson told the BBC.
In the past years, scientists used sound recorders (录音机) to hear fish’s “voices”. There are now thousands of recorders in the ocean. They help scientists match sounds with sea life.
A healthy coral reef (珊瑚礁) is one of the noisiest places in the ocean. Scientists can tell if it’s healthy by listening to it. A healthy coral reef should be full of clicks (咔嚓声) made by shrimps (小虾). When some coral reefs died in 2015 and 2016, they became quiet. After people set up the protected areas, scientists heard the animals come back.
By listening to the ocean, scientists start to understand sea animals’ languages. Strong clownfish make short “chirp” sounds when going after small clownfish. They do this to show they are more powerful (有力量的). A damselfish can create a pop sound to scare other fish by quickly opening and closing its mouth. Mother dolphins can use a special voice to talk to their babies. They are saying “I’m here” to comfort the baby dolphins.
Scientists are building an online library called the Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds (全球水下生物声音库). It will collect sounds from all over the world to check sea animals’ health. Humans need to understand the sounds made by underwater animals before they die out.
27. What do scientists use “recorders” to do?
A. To protect coral reefs. B. To talk with fish.
C. To collect sounds from sea life. D. To look for new kinds of sea life.
28. Why is the coral reef a noisy place?
A. Because many shrimps live there.
B. Because people feed animals there.
C. Because the coral reef can give out sounds.
D. Because many fishes speak in dead coral reefs.
29. How many kinds of “languages” does the writer mention in the fourth paragraph?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
30. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A record of animals’ sounds. B. The health of living things in the sea.
C. A new finding about sounds. D. Sounds in the sea.

A A record of animals’ sounds. B. The health of living things in the sea.
C. A new finding about sounds. D. Sounds in the sea.

【答案】例文
My Wonderful Life in Grade 7
How time flies! This term is coming to an end. I’d like to say something about my wonderful life in Grade 7. My Grade 7 life was filled with new friendships and amazing clubs.
Friends have been an important part of my Grade 7 journey. My close friend is warm and outgoing, always positive and ready to help. His humor makes him great to be with. We supported and learned from each other, laughing, studying and growing together.
Joining clubs is also very important for me. In the art club, I explored creativity, while the drama club let me shine on stage. These activities not only developed my skills but also built my confidence and brought joy. These experiences were enriching and meaningful, shaping my life with new skills, confidence, and friendships.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the friendships and clubs that made Grade 7 special. They left lasting memories and helped me grow. As I enter Grade 8, I’m excited to explore new opportunities and make more memories.
