B 14-year-old Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s top middle school science competition. Leanne Fan developed the Finsen Headphones, a low-cost headphone device that uses machine learning and blue light therapy (疗法) to detect and treat mid-ear infections (感染) in children — potentially preventing up to 60% of hearing loss in children. The world sees 700 million cases of mid-ear infections every year. Fan hopes that this can be an effective and low-cost treatment option for the thousands who are affected. Fan was inspired to create the headphones three years ago while learning about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 after inventing light therapy to treat bacterial (细菌的) infections. “I thought, ‘This is an amazing idea, and I can apply it to something else in my daily life,’” Fan said. Fan took home the top prize, earning the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and $25,000. She is planning to use some of the prize money to start the patent process for the headphones. Fan is optimistic that the Finsen Headphones will be able to help people in the near future. “Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year” Fan said. “I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors. “Even a small idea can go far,” she said. “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I’m here.” 24. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The cost of the headphone device. B. The process of blue light therapy. C. The description of the headphones. D. The cases of mid-ear infections. 25. What inspired Leanne Fan to create the headphones? A. Her own daily life. B Her desire for the Nobel Prize. C. The facts of bacterial infections. D. Niels Finsen’s invention of light therapy. 26. Which of the following can best describe Fan? A. Outgoing. B. Patient. C. Creative. D. Hardworking. 27. What can we learn from Fan’s story? A. Even a small idea can go far. B. Many hands make light work. C. Roses given, fragrance in hand. D. Actions speak louder than words. C Over the last 40 years, 90% of the King Penguins (企鹅) on a faraway island have been lost. This is especially worrying because it was the largest group of King Penguins in the world. Penguins living in large groups are called “colonies”. And about half of the world's King Penguins live in the Crozet islands, which lie between Antarctica and the tip of Africa. In 1982, the scientists visited the colony on one of the Crozet islands — the Pig Island. At that time, they figured that there were around 2 million King Penguins there. But now, after carefully studying images taken from space, the scientists believe there are only about 200,000King Penguins left on the island. The scientists are trying to figure out what might have caused the problem. There are some parts that they understand. For example, it got very warm in 1997. That meant the penguins had to swim much farther to get to the colder water where they could find their food. Many penguins couldn't find enough food to feed their babies. That year was a hard year for the penguins all around Antartica, and many died. It's possible that there was some kind of sickness just on the Pig Island. It's also possible that the penguins could have problems with the cats or mice which are also on the island. But there are cats and mice on the other islands, and the penguins there seem to be in good condition. Before this news, people thought the King Penguins were fine. Now, the scientists are worried that they may be in danger. And it will probably get worse because of climate change. The scientists are planning to travel to the Pig Island to count the penguins again and to find out what is going on. But they won't be able to make the trip until this autumn. 28. What can we learn about the Crozet islands from the second paragraph? A. Two million penguins live there now. B. They are the largest islands in Africa. C. They are home to the King Penguins. D. People discovered the islands in 1982. 29. How did the warm weather in 1997 affect the penguins? A. They could feed more babies. B. They swam slowly in the water. C. They grew up in a faster way. D. They had difficulty in getting food. 30. What are the scientists going to do about the penguins? A. Study their images taken from space. B. Explore what threatens their life. C. Make them live in different groups. D. Protect them from cats and mice. 31. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. A Sharp Drop in Penguins' Number B. The Wonderland of the King Penguins C. A Team's Journey to the South Pole D. The Major Change in Global Climate D For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. But there’s no denying that it’s not as easy or as fast to get around on the beach as it is on a road or a sidewalk. But why is it so hard to walk on sand? The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you “get stuck” at each step. This forces you to use 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy with every step you take. Another idea is that people walk more difficultly on soft than they do on hard surfaces, a study found. The researchers compared how people walked on foam (泡沫) and hard surfaces by analyzing the forces under their feet and how much oxygen each person consumed. They found that walking on soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and snow, caused people to take longer steps — actions that use more energy than walking on a hard surface. But as experienced beach walkers know, there’s a way to make it easier to walk on sand: Just add water. When sand is wet, it becomes more compact (紧密), and walking on it is more similar to walking on hard surfaces. In other words, it’s much easier to cross a beach by walking along the shoreline, where the waves roll in and out. This is a balance though; too much water could make the sand soft once again. If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be accomplished by wearing shoes. Although it’s more difficult, there are some good reasons to exercise on sand. The impact forces are lower on sand than on hard surfaces. Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with an unforgiving surface such as concrete (混凝土). This means sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from workouts. 32. Why is the question raised in the first paragraph? A. To show problems. B. To call up readers’ memories. C. To invite readers to answer it. D. To draw readers’ attention to the topic. 33. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Sinking in at each step. B. Taking a long walk. C. The sandy beach. D. The energy used. 34. How can you walk on sand more easily? A. By putting on shoes. B. By taking longer steps. C. By walking in the water. D. By using special breath methods. 35. Which of the following surfaces is unsuitable for athletes’ training? A. Sand. B. Concrete. C. Foam. D. Snow. Finnish has one of the most complicated grammar systems in the world. How do you learn to use such a language and be grammatically correct, without actually studying grammar? ____36____. When learning a language like Finnish, it’s important to learn everything in context. Using vocabulary apps that focus on isolated (孤立的) words does very little to help.____37____. By doing this, I right away learned to process the language as whole chunks of several words. After all, people don’t speak in isolated words, but in sentences and phrases. The skill to focus on when learning a language is, without a doubt, listening. Because outside of developing comprehension, listening skills spill over to several other areas. In my experience, 95% of speaking ability comes from listening. When you make listening a priority, you start programming yourself to process the language the same way native speakers do. This will make you hear the language like they do. ____38____. While listening has a very abstract quality to it, reading is very concrete (具体的). Reading books helps you naturally absorb the grammar of the language, because you’re learning everything in context. You can also take your time with what you’re reading, so you can re-read sentences as many times as you need. ____39____. Besides, what makes reading such a powerful language learning tool is that you’re being exposed to a wider range of vocabulary than what is typically used in spoken language. ____40____. When learning a language like Finnish, natives are very aware that it’s a challenging language for foreigners to learn. People will still understand you even if you say things wrong or use the wrong case ending. They will just appreciate the effort that you’re taking to learn their language. Surely, when you make a mistake that will make someone not understand you, it usually turns into a valuable learning opportunity! A. Don’t worry about making mistakes B. It will make you sound more and more like them C. This helps you spot different patterns in the language D. Use the grammar correctly without even knowing why E. I think there must be some tips that you might find helpful F. Phrases and sentences are those that do not mean exactly what people say G. That’s why I put an emphasis on learning whole sentences right from the beginning 第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 One evening, Paul O’Sullivan felt bored in his Baltimore apartment. Can you enjoy it with your mom happily?” Emma nodded silently but continued to stare out of the window. Ten minutes later, Emma looked at the large plate of steak and potatoes as if she had no intention of eating them. Mom sighed and asked, “Isn’t it your favorite steak, sweetheart?” “It is, mom,” Emma said in a low voice. After listening to her answer, Mom took the steak and planned to help her cut it into small pieces as before. “No, mom,” she quickly reached out for the plate. “I can only eat it once a month, right?” “Yes, we made a promise about this,” said the mother. “Can I just give it to him?” Emma cautiously asked, and her eyes were full of expectations. Following the direction of her finger, there was a homeless man in tattered (破烂的) clothes. And the mother realized that the man was the figure that flashed by the roadside when her daughter leaned out of the window in the car. “Of course, you can,” the mother agreed. Emma quickly left the table with the full plate of food in hand. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As Emma returned, her mother smiled proudly. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 楚雄州民族中学高二年级9月月考 英语试题 本试卷满分150分,考试用时120分钟。 What is the woman? “Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year,” Fan said. “I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors. “Even a small idea can go far,” she said. “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I’m here.” 24. The Major Change in Global Climate 【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. 根据文章第二段的句子“And about half of the world's King Penguins live in the Crozet islands, which lie between Antarctica and the tip of Africa.”(大约一半的世界帝企鹅生活在位于南极和非洲尖端之间的克罗泽特群岛上。) 根据文章第三段的句子“For example, it got very warm in 1997. That meant the penguins had to swim much farther to get to the colder water where they could find their food. Many penguins couldn't find enough food to feed their babies.”(例如,1997年天气非常暖和。 根据文章最后一段的句子“The scientists are planning to travel to the Pig Island to count the penguins again and to find out what”(科学家们计划再次前往猪岛计算企鹅的数量,并找出发生了什么。) 根据第一段“Over the last 40 years, 90% of the King Penguins(企鹅) on a faraway island have been lost. This is especially worrying because it was the largest group of King Penguins in the world.”(在过去的40年里,一个遥远岛屿上90%的王企鹅已经消失了。 故选A项。 D For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. A To show problems. A. Sand. B. Concrete. C. Foam. D. Snow. D 33. A 34. A 35. 作者在第一段最后一句“But why is it so hard to walk on sand? 根据第二段“The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you “get stuck” at each step.  This  forces you to use 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy with every step you take. 故选A项。 根据第三段最后一句“If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be accomplished by wearing shoes.(如果水不可行,还有另一种让在沙滩行走更轻松的方法——增加你的表面积。 故选A项。 根据最后一段“Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with an unforgiving surface such as concrete (混凝土). This means sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from workouts. She was excited all the way when she was sitting in her mother’s car. Listening to the wonderful music, she couldn’t help but dance in the back seat. Considering her safety, her mother had to stop her and said, “Hey! My sweety! Please be quiet and fasten your seat belt!” “Okay! Mom,” she answered while continuing to roll down the car window. “Emma! Don’t head out of the window! This is very dangerous! No hands either!” Mom raised her voice as she spoke. Emma said yes and then quietly sat back in place. But there was no previous happiness. She got off in silence and ordered meals silently. Her mother thought that perhaps her tone had just been too urgent, and she tried to make Emma happy. “Sweetheart, this is a monthly steak appointment. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 Emma quickly left the table with the full plate of food in hand. As Emma approached the homeless man, her eyes were full of empathy. She greeted him with a warm smile and handed him the plate of food. On receiving the food, the man could hardly conceal his excitement and thanked her joyfully. Meanwhile, Emma sat down beside him, engaging in a heartfelt conversation. Witnessing the moving scene, the mother felt a sense of satisfaction. As Emma returned, her mother smiled proudly. Moved and delighted, her mother gave her a big hug and praised her for extending a helping hand to the homeless man outside. With another large plate of steak ordered on the table, a surge of happiness and warmth ran through Emma, and she was so relieved that she tasted the steak happily. At that moment, the mother realized that Emma had taught her an invaluable lesson — the joy of giving. While the steak may have been Emma’s favorite, Emma understood the importance of sharing and making a difference in someone else’s life. 词汇激活 行类 ①传递:hand /pass ②夸赞:praise/commend ③领悟:realize/understand 情绪类 ①欣喜:excitement/joy/delight ②满足感:a sense of satisfaction/ a sense of fulfillment 【点睛】[高分句型1] Meanwhile, Emma sat down beside him, engaging in a heartfelt conversation.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) [高分句型2] At that moment, the mother realized that Emma had taught her an invaluable lesson—the joy of giving.(运用了that引导宾语从句) [高分句型3] While the steak may have been Emma’s favorite, Emma understood the importance of sharing and making a difference in someone else’s life.(运用了while引导让步状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
