四、阅读理解(本大题共4小题)
Here are four movies for you to watch with your kids.
The Mighty Ducks (1992)
It’s never too early to show your kids a sports movie. You probably have already known the plot of this one: A coach teaches the worst youth team in the league the power of teamwork. What makes this movie different is that the team expect just as much from their coach as he does of them, and give him severe criticism when he doesn’t come through.
Where to stream: Disney+, Digital rental
Cats Don’t Dance (1997)
Those who have seen it absolutely love it for the songs penned by Randy Newman, animated choreography(编舞) developed by the late, great Gene Kelly, and a fun story about a cat named Danny who dreams of breaking into Hollywood.
Where to stream: Tubi, The Roku Channel, Digital rental
Fly Away Home (1996)
Before they were a couple in Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin play a father and daughter who build a plane so they can lead a group of geese on their first migration(迁徙) south for the winter. Assuming your children aren’t into mid-2000s art house films, the pairing of these two actors won’t affect their enjoyment of this heartwarming, visually impressive film.
Where to stream: MGM+, Digital rental
Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
Director George Miller builds a tough but dreamy city that tests the optimism of its hero, a pi g trying to save his farm from closedown. While this may not mean much to your kids, the film is a favorite of musician Tom Waits, making it much cooler than your typical kid’s movie.
Where to stream: Starz, Digital rental

Kensey Jones teaches a second grade class at St. Michael’s Episcopal School in Richmond. In her spare time, she volunteers at Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC), and she recently found a way to help the animals find their way home just a little bit faster.
Kensey spoke with Christie Peters, director of RACC, who also happens to be the mother of one of her students. They cooked up an idea to introduce the class to a rescue dog named Snow, then give them the task of writing persuasive stories and making drawings from the dogs’ perspectives(角度). These works would then be placed on the shelter animal’s cage.
“I’m a very cute dog, ” one child wrote for a dog called Famous Amos. “Don’t you love my name? Do you love me? I hope you do because then you can adopt me!”
Each of the drawings is 100 percent unique as well as being incredibly cute. Christie knew the project would be a hit as soon as she heard Kensey’s idea. “The class was working on persuasive writing, and they wrote pieces as if they were speaking on behalf of the shelter dog trying to get adopted, ” she said. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
“I’m so proud to see my students write amazing persuasive paragraphs through the eyes of one of their RACC dogs, ” Kensey explained.
After meeting Snow, the kids were allowed to choose an adoptable dog from the list of those available at RACC. The kids were then told of the dog’s unique personalities, likes, and dislikes. In the end, the students wrote about 24 stories!
So far, eight animals have gone home after their new owners read their letters! Kensey and Christie both hope other schools will find a similar way to partner with their own local shelters to help homeless pets, too.
22. What do we know about Kensey Jones?
A. She is a cook at a school.
B. She is a caring and creative lady.
C. She encourages kids to adopt dogs.
D. She works with RACC to rescue dogs.
23. Why were kids’ drawings and stories placed on the shelter animal’s cage?
A. To impress potential adopters.
B. To rescue the homeless dogs.
C. To get pet owners’ evaluation.
D. To comfort the dogs in the cage.
24 How do Kensey and Christie feel about the outcome of the project?
A. It’s unexpected.
B It’s discouraging.
C. It’s challenging.
D. It’s beautiful.
25. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Writing Adorable Letters.
B. Training Kids’ Imagination.
C. Am I A Very Lovely Dog?
D. Do You Love Animals?
Search engines have changed the way we use the Internet, putting vast sources of information just a few clicks away. But Harvard professor of psychology Line Daniel Wegner’s recent research proves that websites and the Internet are changing much more than technology itself. They are changing the way our memories function. Wegner’s latest study shows that when people have access to search engines, they remember fewer facts and less information because they know they can rely on “search” as a readily available shortcut.
Wegner believes the new findings show that the Internet has become part of a transactive memory source, a method by which our brains divide information. Transactive memory exists in many forms, as when a husband relies on his wife to remember a relative’s birthday. You don’t have to remember everything in the world yourself. You just have to remember who knows it. Now computers and technology are becoming virtual extensions of our memory.
Wegner conducted several experiments to demonstrate the phenomenon, using various forms of memory recall to test reliance on computers. In one experiment, participants demonstrated that they were more likely to think of computer terms like “Yahoo” or “Google” after being asked a set of difficult trivia questions. In another experiment, participants typed some statements into a computer and they were told the statements would be saved in specific folders. Next, they were asked to recall the statements. Finally, they were given cues to the wording and asked to name the folders where the statements were stored. The participants proved better able to recall the folder locations than the statements themselves.
Wegner admits that questions remain about whether dependence on computers will affect memories negatively: “Nobody knows now what the effects of these tools are on logical thinking.” Students who have trouble remembering distinct facts, for example, may struggle to employ those facts in critical thinking. But he believes that the situation overall is beneficial, comparing dependence on computers to dependence on a mechanical hand or other prosthetic device.
And even though we may not be using our memories to recall distinct facts, we are still using them to consider where the facts are located and how to access them. “We still have to remember things,” Wegner explains. “We’re just remembering a different range of things.” He believes his study will lead to further research into understanding computer dependence, and looks forward to tracing the extent of human interdependence with the computer world — pinpointing the “movable dividing line between us and our computers in cyber networks.”
26. The example of remembering a relative’s birthday in the second paragraph is used to ________.
A. showcase that people who are closely related tend to have shared memories
B. demonstrate how people initially developed external sources of memory
C. illustrate the concept of a transactive memory source using a familiar situation
D. emphasize the effectiveness and accuracy of transactive memory sources
27. From the experiment ,when asked to provide facts that are not familiar to them, people tend to ________.
A. think of specific information sources
B. type into computer and remember them
C. recall them from their deep memories
D. link the unfamiliar facts to their experiences
28. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Computer dependence affects our thinking capacities in other distinct fields.
B. Reliance on computers does not necessarily reduce human memory.
C. Computers have helped people to understand the memory system better.
D. Researches should be done to reveal the side effect of computer dependence.
29. Which of the following can serve as the best title?
A. Wegner’s Research Has Pinpointed The Dividing Line
B. Heavy Reliance On Computer For Storing More Information
C. Human’s Memory Capability Becoming Inevitably Weaker
D. Technological Networks Reshaping Our Brain Functions
Noise created by humans, such as car traffic, quieted by about 30% between late March and early May, 2020, when Governor Greg Abbott closed schools and restaurants across Texas, according to analysis by researchers at Southern Methodist University (SMU).
“There was quite a big change in some areas,” said Stephen Arrowsmith, a seismologist at SMU, who took on the project with a class of undergraduate and graduate students. Arrowsmith and his students looked at data from a dozen seismometers(地震仪)across North Texas. Seismometers are used to detect earthquakes, but they are sensitive to just about everything that makes the ground vibrate, such as strong winds, ocean waves, construction and traffic.
The idea of using seismometers to track urban noise gained popularity last March when Belgian seismologist Thomas Lecocq posted some of his urban noise data from Brussels on Twitter. Lecocq, of the Royal Observatory of Belgium, received such an enthusiastic response from scientists that he launched the group “Lockdown Seismology” online. “It’s where bored seismologists around the world are working together,” Arrowsmith joked.
Arrowsmith hopes his findings will contribute to a growing list of creative ways in which researchers are using seismometers. In his course, Arrowsmith teaches students how seismic stations can help investigators solve crimes, like terrorist bombings, aid scientists in tracking nuclear tests or assist inspectors in investigating accidents, like chemical plant explosions. One potential application of his research is to better understand the shallow layers of Earth beneath cities. “That could be useful in places where there’s a real seismic hazard(风险), like San Francisco or Los Angeles,” he said, “where just knowing what that shallow structure is tells you a lot about how it would respond in a big earthquake.”
30. How do the researchers obtain the data of noise in Texas?
A. By observing car traffic. B. By surveying their students.
C. By consulting the governor. D. By employing Seismometers.
31. What does the underlined word “vibrate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Break B. Freeze
C. Shake D. Dry
32. What is a direct result of Lecocq’s posting some of his urban noise data?
A. Seismologists are attracted. B. Earthquake detection is improved.
C. Urban noise is reduced. D. Crime investigation is simplified.
33. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning the seismometer?
A. Its possible risks. B. Its potential applications.
C. Its appeal to the public. D. Its market value.

I met Sam on a rainy, windy and chaotic morning in August. I had planned to take a train to Boston and then catch a coach to Harvard University for an important academic conference. Due to a track accident, my train was delayed by two hours. I arrived at the train station in Boston just 25 minutes before the departure of the last coach that could take me to the university on time. The moment I got off the train, I rushed like mad through the station building and jumped into the first car in the taxi queue (队列) without hesitation.
That was when I met Sam. I told him where I was going, but he said he wasn’t familiar with the nearest coach station to Harvard. I thought my explanation was not clear enough, so I provided more detailed information, including the names of nearby landmarks, but he still looked puzzled. When I was about to lose hope, Sam took out his smartphone and searched online. After a long and intense search that seemed like forever, Sam finally found the right route and started the car.
Finally, with just three minutes to spare we pulled into the coach station. Thankfully, there was a long line still waiting to board the coach. Sam parked the car nearby, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. “We made it,” he said.
Just then I realized that my wallet was left at home. I gave him an embarrassed and panicked look as I searched through my bag in vain. I had no cash and the mobile payment app on my phone was malfunctioning. A sense of hopelessness overwhelmed me as I saw the coach queue moving forward quickly.
At this moment, Sam pointed to a small convenience store beside the station, suggesting I could ask for help there. I rushed in, only to be told that they couldn’t offer any cash or bank card-related assistance.

【原文】M: Being away from home for college can be stressful. Besides all the pressures of study, there’s the pressure on your pocket. Today, let’s go to a university to find out. Excuse me. Can I ask you a few questions?
W: Well, Okay.
M: How do you find the cost of living in the city?
W: Everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and traveling.
M: So, what do you spend most on?
W: Transport, I think. For food, if I cook myself, it’s not expensive at all. For clothing, I bring my clothes here from my home country, where they’re nice and cheap. But every week, I have to spend more than 100 pounds on the trains.
M: Then what’s the social life like?
W: I’m a very social person. I love hanging out with my friends and meeting new people. Thankfully, I don’t drink nor smoke, so the only expense is maybe tickets to the cinemas, club, and so on.

The Mighty Ducks (1992)
It’s never too early to show your kids a sports movie. You probably have already known the plot of this one: A coach teaches the worst youth team in the league the power of teamwork.
After meeting Snow the kids were allowed to choose an adoptable dog from the list of those available at RACC.

In his course Arrowsmith teaches students how seismic stations can help investigators solve crimes, like terrorist bombings, aid scientists in tracking nuclear tests or assist inspectors in investigating accidents, like chemical plant explosions.
【答案】30. D 31. C 32. A 33. B

【答案】参考范文
I ran back to Sam and told him the bad news. “I left my wallet at home and I have no way to pay you right now,” I stammered, my voice shaking. Sam looked at me in disbelief for a moment, then his expression softened. Without hesitation, he pulled out some cash and handed it to me. “Here, this should cover your fare. Don’t worry about it. You can pay me later,” he said kindly, writing down his phone number. “Call me when you get the chance.” Overwhelmed with gratitude, I thanked him profusely and rushed to board the coach just in time.
One day later, when I was back in Boston, I called Sam as promised. He answered cheerfully and picked me up from the coach station. On the way to the train station, we chatted happily. I expressed my thanks again, telling him how his help had made the conference possible. Upon arrival, I paid him back the borrowed money along with a generous tip he declined. I also gave him a souvenir from the conference, which he accepted with delight. Our brief encounter had turned into a lasting friendship. We vowed to stay in touch, and I felt truly fortunate to have met such a warm-hearted friend like Sam.
