Despite living in a silent world for more than two decades, Zhan Junyi who has been deaf from birth has become a professional dancer on stage, with music now audible through an artificial cochlea (人工耳蜗).
On occasion, he watched the beautiful dance presentation Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, or Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva (千手观音), performed by the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe on TV. “The dance was well performed by the dancers with hearing loss, and I was moved by their excellent skills and strength,” he said. “At that time, I dreamed of being a dancer like them.”
He began to watch videos of dance performances and competitions to do the dance movements. To keep up with the rhythm, he needed an artificial cochlea — a device that sends vibrations (震动) to the hearing nerve — in his ears.
“With the help of the device, I can feel the vibrations of music,” he said, “but it will easily fall out when I have big movements, so I have to wear a hair band to help keep it on.”
Yet through perseverance (毅力), he excelled at dancing and was admitted to the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe in 2015. In 2021, he was admitted to Changchun University to study dance. He has gained rich experience, including performing at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games and 2023 Spring Festival Gala.

You’ve probably heard that brick-and-mortar retail (实体零售) is in trouble. Even industry giants are closing hundreds of stores. Given retail’s gradual change from physical stores to mobile and e-commerce (电子商务), you may be wondering, “What will retail look like in the future?” Nobody knows. But here are a few things you can expect to see based on current technology.
Super-fast delivery is coming. Today, the normal practice is two-day delivery. But if you’ve been paying attention, you know that’s changing. In fact, up to 25% of consumers said that they would abandon their orders if one-day delivery wasn’t available. Of course, that’s just the beginning. Two-hour delivery is coming in the foreseeable future, and Amazon has already been trying 30-minute delivery.
Your kitchen will resupply itself. You won’t have to worry about running out of essentials like coffee, pet food or snacks because your containers will sense stocks (库存) and replace those items without you having to lift a finger. No more waking up to find your coffee store is empty or last-minute rush to the grocery store because you forget to buy pet food.
Know exactly what’s in stock and where to get it. Have you ever gone to a store hoping to buy something, only to learn that it was out of stock? A new feature from Google Home allows people to ask the Google Assistant to find in-stock products at the closest store. For example: “Google, where can I find the Nintendo Switch console?” The assistant will tell you how many stores have it right away and how close they are. Of course, it isn’t currently available for all stores in all locations, but you can already see the future when it has become standard.
Convenience, experience, and options-retail will take on a new look.
8. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. It is possible to deliver goods within two hours in the future.
B. Consumers can’t get their orders in one day now.
C. The delivery will be in two days in the future.
D. Super-fast delivery has widely been used now.
9. The author primarily illustrates the future of retail by _____?
A. Analyzing data and citing research.
B. Listing examples of future tech applications.
C. Comparing pros and cons of online and physical retail.
D. Proposing theories and using logical arguments.
10. According to the passage, what will happen in the future?
A. Retail will disappear gradually.
B. Industrial giants will rule the whole retail trade.
C. People will ask the Google Assistant to purchase goods.
D. Shopping will be more convenient and effective.
11. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How Will New Technology Change the World?
B What Will Retail Be Like in the Future?
C. How Will We Run the Retail Trade in the Future?
D. What Benefits Will High-tech Bring in the Future?
D
Inspired by the Chinese blockbuster film Ne Zha 2, where the immortal Taiyi Zhenren uses the Seven-Colored Lotus to reconstruct bodies, a scientific team in Wuhan, Hubei Province has spent a decade developing real-life bone regeneration technology using lotus.
A research team from Wuhan Polytechnic University’s School of Food Science and Engineering has pioneered a groundbreaking medical application using extracts from lotus root fibers. By employing 3D printing technology, they create customized bone scaffolds tailored to bone defect areas. These scaffolds stabilize fractured skeletons while guiding cells to grow along the lotus fiber structures, accelerating bone tissue regeneration.
Jiang Xueye, a lead researcher on the team, explained that compared to traditional steel nail implants, the lotus fiber scaffolds address issues such as poor adaptability and extensive surgical exposure. They also significantly reduce the risk of patient rejection. Crucially, the scaffold’s degradation perfectly corresponds with the rate of new bone growth, making secondary removal surgeries unnecessary.
The technology is currently undergoing animal trials and, if successfully applied in clinical settings, could dramatically lower treatment costs and ease suffering for fracture patients, the school noted.
Beyond medical breakthroughs, the team has made remarkable progress in developing functional food ingredients and health products from lotus roots. Their patented lotus root powder preserves nearly all nutrients and can be used to create instant drink mixes, fish cakes and cookies, high-activity probiotic products through lactic acid bacteria fermentation (乳酸菌发酵). The gelatinized (糊化) power also serves as a materials for 3D-printed foods, suggesting a future where imaginative treats shaped like Ne Zha or his Wind and Fire Wheels could be crafted on demand.
12. What is the main focus of the research team from Wuhan Polytechnic University?
A. Developing new 3D printers.
B. Creating traditional steel nail implants.
C. Using lotus root fibers to rebuild bones.
D. Producing functional foods from lotus roots.
13 What advantage do lotus fiber scaffolds have over traditional steel nail implants?
A. They are cheaper to produce.
B. They reduce the risk of patient rejection and avoid secondary surgeries.
C. They immediately dissolve post-surgery to prevent infection.
D. They have lower immune rejection rates.
14. What is a potential future application of the gelatinized lotus root powder mentioned in the article?
A. 3D-printed foods shaped like characters or objects.
B. Construction materials for bridges.
C. Fuel for vehicles.
D. Clothing for athletes.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the research team’s work on lotus fiber scaffolds?
A Skeptical and critical.
B. Neutral and indifferent.
C. Confused and uncertain.
D. Enthusiastic and supportive.

Final exams were approaching, and everyone in school was excited about vacations. We were dreaming of far-off destinations, our minds filled with images of thrilling adventures.
After school on Friday, on my way home, I ran into my best friend. Enthusiastic about the vacations, I asked him about his plans. His eyes twinkled brightly as he replied, “I’m going to visit my grandparents with my parents for a week.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of going to the same place year after year? I remember, every year, your family takes 7 to 10 days off to head back to your native village,” I asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Oh, not at all! That’s the absolute best time of the year for me! Being with my folks in the village is just amazing.” His face beamed with joy as he continued, "In the village, I get to meet so many wonderful people, and everyone there is so kind and welcoming. Our neighborhood crew is tight! We’re always hanging out together, you know? Just running wild, chilling by the lake, or bouncing between each other’s houses. Honestly, I know what really matters about these village trips. It’s not the cool places we see — it’s spending time with the people I love. That’s the real treasure of life.”
His words made me recall my own grandparents. I realized I hadn’t seen them for years. But still, it’s a pleasure to be there. … we had big long gardens and a big multi-story house.
The next day, over breakfast, I mustered up the courage and asked my parents, “Can we visit grandparents this summer after exams?” Dad replied hesitantly, “Oh, that’s unexpected.” Mom was surprised. “Well, you know it gets really hot there this time of year.” After a short pause, Dad gave a small sigh and met my hopeful gaze. “However,” he said, “if you perform well in exams, we’ll make the trip.”
For the next six weeks, I threw myself completely into my studies. My mom was amazed by this sudden transformation in me. Soon came the long-awaited exam results.

My Experience Using Body Language
I’d like to share a memorable experience about the power of body language.
Last month, my friend was giving a presentation but suddenly forgot his words. He looked very nervous. I didn’t want to interrupt him by speaking. Instead, I made eye contact, gave him a warm smile, and nodded slightly to show my support and encouragement. Seeing this, he took a deep breath, smiled back, and confidently continued his talk.
This experience taught me that a simple, kind gesture can sometimes be more powerful and comforting than words. Body language is truly a universal and silent communicator that connects our hearts.

【答案】One possible version:
I rushed home and immediately handed my parents my score card and a note with “PLEASE.” This time, they instantly agreed. The next day, we set out for our hometown. Every one, be it relatives or neighbors, greeted us with smiles, treating me like their own son. Every day brought new happiness –- digging with Grandpa in the garden, playing games with cousins until sunset, roaming around familiar streets with loved ones and even joining the local kids in their football matches. The days passed as we had a wonderful time together. Truth be told, everything was more fun in a big family. When departure day came, my heart ached.
I saw my mom had tears in her eyes when leaving them. She wiped them away and smiled, saying, “I didn’t realize how much I missed the village until now. It’s not just a place; it’s where our roots are.” As we drove away, I felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I realized that the real adventure wasn’t about exploring far-off places but about reconnecting with family and our heritage. This trip wasn’t just for me; it was a reminder for all of us that family is the true treasure of life. From then on, visiting Grandma and Grandpa became our annual tradition, a time to cherish love, laughter, and the simple joys of being together.
