How do you know when summer is near? Is it the sweet smell of gardenias? Or maybe the sounds of cicadas? Did you know there's a science to understanding the timing of these seasonal events or their changes? It's called phenology (物候学).
Phenology is a key part of life on Earth. Many birds time their nesting (筑巢). They make sure that their eggs hatch (孵化) when many insects appear so that they can feed their babies. Many farmers and gardeners use phenology too, often without even realizing it. For example, they plant carrots and cabbages when the first lilac leaves appear.
Phenology affects many things in nature, including water and carbon cycles (碳循环). These cycles play a key role in deciding the Earth's climate. But because of climate change, many phonological events are now changing. Spring events are taking place earlier now than in the past, and fall events are happening later. Scientists aren't sure what these changes mean for biological systems. But many problems could come. One of them is called phonological mismatch. This happens when animals and plants respond (作出反应) differently to climate change. Animals and plants that depend on (依靠) each other can even lose their lives. For example, if a plant flowers before the pollinators arrive, both the plant and the pollinators might have trouble living.
If you're interested in these cycles of cause and result, you can take a closer look at some phonological events. Record the weather every day and when different plants bud and flower. After several years, you'll notice that these events don't happen at the same time every year. At the very least, you'll get a better understanding of how climate change is affecting the world around us.

To make more members of their group, plants spread (传播) their seeds to other areas. And they have different kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity (重力). When the fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. When there is enough water, Up, and the right temperature, the seeds in the fruit start to come up. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seeds even farther away. Apples spread this way.
Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions (蒲公英类) are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple seeds also use wind. Their seeds have long, thin leaves. When the seed falls from the tree, the leaves help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants to spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. When some of the seeds leave the animals' bodies, they are in a new place. Some animals and the seeds come so close together that when they leave, the seeds stay on their bodies, and they take the seeds to other places.
Ants also help spread seeds. They bring some seeds back to their home. They only eat part of the seeds. They leave the rest of the seeds underground. After that, the seeds can start growing.
How Do Plants Spread Seeds?
The gravity
The fruit 1 so much that it falls to the ground. The seeds in it then start to grow or are moved to another area.
The 2 of the wind
Some plants' seeds are so light that the winds can carry them to new places.
The animals’ 3
· Some animals eat the seeds and excrete (排泄) them in other places.
· Some 4 the seeds and the seeds stay on them so they carry them to other places.
· Some animals 5 the seeds underground and some of them start growing at last.

Do you know bamboo? It's a kind of amazing and useful plant. In China, people started using bamboo thousands of years ago. We can make many useful things from bamboo, such as chopsticks, paper, musical instruments, and even clothes. And guess what? Now bamboo is helping to make the earth a better place.
Every year, the world makes about 400 million tons of plastic (塑料) waste. Bamboo is a great replacement (替代品) for plastic. It grows fast and lives for about 60 years on average. It’s also strong and flexible (柔韧的), so it is perfect for making many things. Most importantly, it’s far more eco-friendly than plastic, as it can break down in about three months, while plastic takes hundreds of years. So in 2023, China started a three-year plan to encourage people to use less plastic and more bamboo.
Anji, a city in northwestern Zhejiang, has over 600 square kilometers of bamboo forests. It is trying to explore new ways to use bamboo. You can see many bamboo-made things there. For example, instead of plastic bags, they use bags made with 60% bamboo powder (粉末). These bags are even stronger than plastic ones!
However, it isn’t easy to replace plastic with bamboo. Things made of bamboo often have higher prices than plastic ones. To solve this, our country gives money support (支持). Anji is also trying to explore more ways to use bamboo. In the future, bamboo might replace not just plastic, but also wood and maybe even some kinds of food. All in all, bamboo has a bright future.

A glaciologist (冰川学家) from Yunnan University, and his team are drilling ice cores (钻取冰芯) in Xizang. They see the glacier as a place of beauty and exciting discoveries.
Tina ice cores are like “earth's history book”. They show when the earth got hot or cold in the past, when big ice and snow times appeared, and to which way.
Drilling is only done in spring or autumn. In late April 2023, Tian's team began their work. While getting to a cold down the glaciers, they found unexpected changes in ice and snow — some ice and snow turned into water. This made them change their direction. But this made a box holding ice cores tip over (倾倒), breaking some ice cores along the way. They fast learned to drill one or two holes (洞) to get ice cores. But after some losses, they had to adjust their tools.
Even with these challenges, the 35-year-old Tian never thought of giving up. Finally, the team brought back over 350 meters of ice cores! These will be useful for studies by Tian's team and other groups in China and other countries. And they'll use some for future studies.
“We used to drill with the teams from other countries. Now we can do it ourselves. It feels great,” Tian said. “Our country has many glaciers, but with global warming, many are getting smaller.”
Tian's work is part of the activity called “Memory of Glaciers”. It's to collect and protect ice cores, make people know climate change is a serious matter, and call for people to do something for it.

Bananas are the perfect fruit. Not only are they sweet and delicious, but they are also easy to carry around, so you can take them anywhere. Best of all, bananas have different things that the human body needs!
Bananas grow best in warm places that get lots of rain. They grow on plants that look like trees. The banana plant, however, is more like a herb (草本植物) than a tree because it doesn't have a strong, woody stem (茎). The plants can grow as high as 30 feet. When they reach their full height, flowers grow out from the stem. These flowers grow bananas.
Two or three times each year, the plants grow fruit. The bananas grow together, which seem like "hands". A hand is made up of 10 to 20 bananas. Growers sometimes call bananas "fingers". Each bunch (串) of bananas has about 15 hands, and so a whole bunch may have as many as 200 bananas and can weigh more than 100 pounds.
After about three months, the bananas are ready to be picked. At this time, they still aren't the sunny yellow color of bananas. Farmers pick them when they're green. That's how they're shipped to stores. They turn yellow along the way and are ready to be in the markets.
If you love bananas, you are not alone. Americans started enjoying bananas when the first shipment arrived in the United States in 1876. Today, Americans eat more bananas than any other fruit. People buy more bananas than apples and grapes together. Every American eats over 26 pounds of bananas each year!

The Yellow and Yangtze Rivers have had great meanings in Chinese culture since thousands of years ago. Water greatly influences (影响) Chinese culture. Just like running water, Chinese culture has a long history. It never stops and always keeps differences.
However, water has two sides (面). Water is highly important for growing everything. It grows everything quietly without competing with anything. But if we can't be good with it, it will bring dangers. Knowing the two sides of water, Chinese people tried to use it in the best way. The Dujiangyan water system in Chengdu is a good example. It makes full use of water and follows the two sides of water.
Some Chinese great thinkers' ideas also came from water. For example, Confucius (孔子) thought water had many good qualities that we should learn from. Water always runs actively and grows everything kindly. We should have a clear and open mind as water does. So he said, “The wise (智者) love water.” Through knowing water, Laozi had the idea of “overcoming hardness with softness (以柔克刚).” So we should follow the rules of nature to live in peace with ourselves.
Besides, we can read many ancient poems (古诗) and writings about water. So when we talk about Chinese culture, water is one of the things that will come into our mind.
