“I can’t afford to play badminton now.” Many badminton lovers are now saying this because of the surprising price 41 of badminton shuttlecocks (羽毛球).
A bottle of Yonex As02 shuttlecocks, which 42 for 81 yuan last November, has risen to 149 yuan. What has led to the price growth?
Shuttlecock makers say the simple reason 43 this is the growing prices of the feathers (羽毛) of ducks and geese (鹅). Duck and goose numbers of China have 44 since 2020, increasing the price. According to Yangcheng Evening news, the numbers of ducks and geese kept were 4,218 billion and 515 million in 2023 respectively (分别地). However, the numbers were 4,878 billion and 634 million in 2019.
Also, only feathers from 45 kinds of ducks or geese are hard enough and can be used to make shuttlecocks. One shuttlecock needs 16 feathers, but one goose or duck can only 46 up to 14 such feathers.
At the same time, making shuttles is not a 47 task. The feathers need to be cleaned bleached (漂白), and disinfected (消毒). This is to 48 bacteria (细菌) and make sure the shuttle stays tough (坚固的).
49 feather shuttlecocks are expensive, can we use man-made ones instead? Carbon fiber (碳纤维) shuttles are one 50 . They are about 10 yuan each, and they last longer and fly better. However, controlling them during hits is much harder compared to natural ones. So, many players are not ready to say goodbye to feather shuttlecocks just yet.

Nigeria is a hot and dry country in Africa where electricity is not available (可获得的) to many homes. Most people grow and sell their own fruit and vegetables. Keeping them fresh in the hot place is a real challenge. Without a fridge, most fresh food goes bad in several days. Throwing away the food means losing money for poor families. Eating the bad food causes serious health problems.
Local teacher Mohammed Bah Abba was worried about this problem and decided to solve it. As a boy born into a family of clay pot (陶罐) makers, Mohammed knew that these traditional clay pots could keep water even when dry. In the 1990s he used this traditional knowledge and his understanding of science to invent a cooling system. It worked as a “desert fridge”.
Mohammed’s cooling system is made up of two pots—a small pot inside a larger pot. In the space between the two clay pots, there is wet sand. People put the fruit and vegetables in the smaller pot,and cover it with a wet cloth. Then they leave the larger pot in a dry place. When water from the sand evaporates (蒸发), it causes the temperature in the pots to go down. This way the food in the smaller pot is cool.
With the pot-in-pot cooling system, food stays fresh much longer. Mohammed’s “desert fridge” has improved the lives of thousands of people. So in 2001 he won the Rolex Award for Enterprise, which is for the people who try to make the world a better place.

The world’s first large language model (LLM) for moon study is coming! It makes studying the moon much faster and easier than before.
The new tool came out in August at the China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang, Guizhou. The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Geochemistry (中国科学院地球化学研究所) and the Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Group (阿里云智能集团) made it together.
The LLM is the “smart brain” for the digital moon, which has the most moon information in one place in the world, said Xinhua.
On the moon, there are more than 1 million big craters (大陨石坑) and lots of small ones. It’s really hard for scientists to find all these holes by themselves. The LLM can tell and remember different craters by size, depth and shape.
According to Liu Jianzhong, a researcher at the Institute of Geochemistry, the model is correct more than 80 percent of the time.
Working things out faster helps scientists learn more quickly and get ready for harder missions (任务) in the future. Using big AI models for moon science can also teach researchers how to explore other planets better.
“The LLM is like a child with a very high IQ. We train and teach the child professional (专业的) things,” Liu told Xinhua. “We will keep it growing and helping us solve more scientific problems.”
66.What do we know about the LLM for moon study?
A.It first showed up in Beijing. B.Different countries built it together.
C.It can help find water on the moon. D.It will make studies on the moon easier.
67.How can the LLM help scientists study the moon?
A.By making maps of the moon. B.By giving the information of rock sizes.
C.By finding different kinds of craters. D.By recording crater changes.
68.What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.It is important to study different planets.
B.Big AI models are important for space research.
C.There are many challenges in studying the moon.
D.Scientists should get ready for harder moon missions.
69.What does Liu Jianzhong think of the LLM?
A.It is not easy to train it. B.It can teach children many things.
C.It will be smarter in the future. D.It cannot solve difficult scientific problems.

Cao Yajuan is a 14-year-old student in Daye, Hubei. About one year ago, she joined in the Blue Letter Project (项目) and got much help from it.
The Blue Letter Project is for children aged 13—14 in poor areas. Volunteers of the project write letters to the children one-to-one as pen friends at least once a month. In the letter, the volunteer shared her own ways of studying English. Also, she told Cao her colorful college life. “It seems interesting. I’ll study hard to go to a good college in the future,” said Cao happily.
“As kids grow up, there will be more and more challenges. Some of them don’t know what to do with the challenges. And they don’t like sharing these things with their parents or teachers. At this time, if nobody gives a helping hand, it may cause big problems. Even worse, some kids will hurt themselves. That’s why we started the project,” the director (负责人) of the project said.

It couldn’t be my father or mother, because they had gone to their friend’s birthday party. It might be my neighbor. Maybe he wanted to go to work. But after a bright light, I saw a terrible monster at my window. I felt very scared and ran to my bed quickly. In the bed, I remembered the TV news about a lost lion at the local zoo in the evening. Yes, it must be the lost lion. Then I couldn’t wait to call the police. Isn’t it an exciting experience?

They listen to their joys and troubles, and answer their questions about everyday life and the future. Most of the volunteers are college students.
