Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital city of the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s museums and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
●Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
●Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
●Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most weeks, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing”and “accomplishment.”I realized his tears weren’t out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff’s department Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to“climbing a mountain.”In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress.“I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,”he said.
Finally, he made it.“I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,”he said.“I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,”he said.
4. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?
A. He was worried about his future.
B. He had reached one of his goals.
C. He was moved by a touching story.
D. He had experienced something terrible.
5. What was the response of the sheriff’s department when they learned of Kevin’s education?
A. They recommended a part-time job to him.
B They assessed his suitability for the job.
C. They refused him directly.
D. They gave him hope.
6. How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED?
A. By taking time to do things that interest him.
B. By reporting his test results to his tutor.
C. By writing himself encouraging words.
D. By reminding himself of his progress.
7. What can we learn from Kevin’s story?
A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Grasp all, lose all.
B 5. D 6. D 7. A

It might appear that an eighteen- week old baby isn’t doing much more than looking cute and smiling, but actually, those as young as four months are already linking the sounds they hear and the way the mouth needs to move to produce these sounds, according to a new study published in Developmental Science.
Eylem Altuntas, the study’s leader, and his team taught a group of infants (婴儿), between four and six months old, a series of nonsense words, such as “bivawo” or “dizalo”, which contained lip and tongue-tip sounds. They paired these words with cartoon images showing jellyfish and crabs.
Next, the babies were shown videos of people mouthing (without sound) these same nonsense words. In some videos, the face matched the cartoon image that they had been shown with that sound previously and in other videos it didn’t. Researchers measured how long babies spent looking at the videos. The results illustrated babies looked much longer at the videos where the face matched what they’d been shown previously. This demonstrated the babies’ minds were already making connections between the movements of mouths and the sounds they heard.
The findings surprised researchers. While it was previously believed that babies went through a complex learning process between six and twelve months old, babies began learning patterns at four months instead. This new study reveals your baby is listening to what you are saying and how you are saying it before he/she can respond back to you.
The research may be capable of assisting children who face speech difficulties and may make a big difference by helping them earlier on. The findings also provide opportunities for further research on what types of mouth movements young infants can tell apart. It also raises questions about how babies from bilingual (双语的) homes learn language.
Altuntas recommends having conversations with 4—7-month-old babies. “Talk to your baby slowly, clearly pronouncing each word, and then stop, waiting for the baby to answer. Teach your little one words by labeling objects around you. Infants are already connecting all the puzzle pieces, and by speaking and interacting with them frequently, parents can help them put it all together,” Altuntas said.
8. Why did the researchers measure babies’ viewing time in the videos?
A. To determine the sound recognition. B. To assess their ability to concentrate.
C. To test how long they can remember things. D. To see if they can link what they see and hear.
9. What was the previous common belief about babies according to the text?
A. They began learning patterns from 6 to 12 months.
B. Their study process was the same as the adults’.
C. They easily confused sounds with tones.
D. Their learning ability was more complex.
10 What does the research imply?
A. Bilingual families should emphasize movements of speech.
B Early intervention could help children with speech issues.
C. Cartoons are more effective for language learning.
D. Formal language classes are necessary for babies.
11. What does Altunta suggest parents do for their 4—7-month-olds?
A. Play loud music. B. Avoid using cartoons.
C. Speak in a slow tone. D. teach more languages.
D 9. A 10. B 11. C

A recent experiment on China’s space station showed that it’s possible to have closed aquatic (水生的) ecosystems in space. In this experiment, zebrafish, a small fish, successfully completed their life cycle from growth to reproduction in 43 days.
On April 25th, four zebrafish, along with four grams of aquatic plants and three Chinese astronauts, were sent into space on the Shenzhou-18 spacecraft. The goal was to create a closed aquatic ecosystem where plants would produce oxygen through photosynthesis (光合作用) to keep the fish alive. The fish, in turn, would provide nutrients to the plants through their waste. This setup aimed to create an environment where life could be sustained without outside help.
Researchers from the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the CAS designed the experiment. They built a fish tank with an advanced recycling system. The zebrafish food was injected into it with a syringe (注射器) to keep the ecosystem self-sufficient.
The zebrafish, which are about 3 to 5 centimeters long, laid over 300 eggs at a time. Because zebrafish share over 70% of their genes with humans, they are ideal for studying human diseases and developing new drugs. In the microgravity of the space station, the zebrafish exhibited peculiar swimming patterns, including upside-down and spinning. These observations helped researchers understand how vertebrates (脊椎动物) adapt to space conditions.
This experiment laid the foundation for future research in aquatic biology and space medicine. It also opened the door to sending more vertebrates into space to study their long-term effects. The water samples collected by the astronauts were brought back to Earth and stored in ultra-low temperature cases for further analysis.
The successful creation of a closed aquatic ecosystem on the space station is a big achievement for China’s space technology. It advances our understanding of life in space and provides important data and support for future missions. With over 500 labs in China working on zebrafish research, this experiment opens new possibilities in space biology and life sciences.
12. What was the main purpose of the experiment involving zebrafish?
A. To see how long zebrafish can survive in space.
B. To study the effects of microgravity on human cells.
C. To create a self-sustaining aquatic ecosystem in space.
D. To test the ability of zebrafish to swim in microgravity.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The tank. B. The food. C. The system. D. The experiment.
14. What did the zebrafish exhibit in the microgravity environment?
A. Rapid growth. B. Increased appetite.
C. Increased egg production. D. Abnormal swimming behaviors.
15. What can we infer about the experiment from the fifth paragraph?
A. It has great significance. B. It involves extensive laboratory analysis.
C. The results have been widely applied in daily life. D. It involves cooperation among multiple countries.

故填were selected。

inspire sb. to do sth.

Growing up, I was always shy and unconfident in myself. Aside from my parents, I felt others found my shyness difficult to accept. It used to be something that affected my life in the most negative way possible. It made me unable to talk in any setting in which I felt uncomfortable. This means that I wasn’t even able to speak in class, chat with my friends, order my own food, etc.
At the 5th grade, my parents moved to a neighbouring city because of the job relocation and I changed schools. I found myself in a new classroom with a new teacher, whom we called Ms. S, surrounded by 30 new faces. This was fairly terrifying. And so when I was asked to stand up and introduce myself, I was trembling.
Still then, I was labelled as “shy and quiet”. I didn’t have a lot of friends, only spoke in class if I really had to, kept everything to myself, avoided public events, and panicked badly at the thought of oral presentations in class.
This haunted (萦绕) me until one day, Ms. S announced in class that each of us was going to be singing a solo in front of the class. I’d had no idea that this was going to happen. When it was my turn, she called me up to the front, instructed the piano player to begin and I very unwillingly sang “Cuckoo, cuckoo, pray what do you do...” in a barely audible, high-pitched voice, with the rest of silent children staring up at me. Ms. S stood next to the piano, saying: “Louder! Louder! ” But I didn’t know how to project my voice; I couldn’t make it any louder.
I was really upset at it. I cried for a few hours. I suspected my childhood shyness was largely unsupported in the new school. This even made me not want to go to school.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
After school, Ms. S asked me to go into her office.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I took her word for it and something shifted for me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
After school, Ms. S asked me to go into her office. Though I was hesitant, I dragged myself to her office and Ms. S waved at me with a welcoming smile. As it turned out, not only was I allowed to make up for my poor performance, but Ms. S was the first person other than my parents to accept my shyness. She shared her own shyness story, and this really surprised me. Ms. S suggested I should go beyond my comfort zone by doing new activities.
I took her word for it and something shifted for me. At first, I simply worked at feeling comfortable speaking in English and making new friends. Then when I was a bit more adapted to the school, I started talking to teachers. After that, I also started getting more involved in clubs and activities. Currently, I’m working at talking with more people and just being more open in general. I even voluntarily participated in a Science Fair, became vice-president of two clubs, and joined the public speaking club.

A They recommended a part-time job to him.
B. They assessed his suitability for the job.
C
10. What does the research imply?
A. Bilingual families should emphasize movements of speech.
B. Early intervention could help children with speech issues.
C. Cartoons are more effective for language learning.
D. Formal language classes are necessary for babies.
11. What does Altunta suggest parents do for their 4—7-month-olds?
A. Play loud music. B. Avoid using cartoons.
C. Speak in a slow tone. D. teach more languages.
D

Parents worry about their kids’ screen time. ___16___ To figure it out, it helps to think about a child’s overall health and wellness. Do they get plenty of sleep and exercise? Do they spend quality time with family? If the answers are no, then limiting screen time might help. Try these techniques to set healthy boundaries and keep conflict to a minimum.
* Start with compassion (同情心). Unstructured screen time is an important source of comfort and entertainment for many kids. It can also be a source of conflict, though. ___17___ You can say to your kids, “Look, I know you need to relax.” Let them know a certain portion of their screen time is theirs to do what they like.
* Offer additional screen time as a bonus. ___18___ If you go this route, be sure to let your child know exactly what is necessary to earn that time. For example, getting ready for bed without complaining might earn them an additional ten minutes the next day.
*___19___ It can also be helpful to set specific times of the day or week when your kids know they’ll be allowed to use their screens. For instance, maybe the 30 minutes before dinner are always open for screen time. That kind of structure helps kids know what to expect.
* Emphasize connection. Experts recommend no screen time for kids under the age of two —except for FaceTiming with relatives, which can benefit the whole family: This activity provides a way of maintaining relationships, especially for young kids. ___20___

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
After school, Ms. S asked me to go into her office.
