Andréa Speranza wanted to be a firefighter long before she had the right word for her wish. After one childhood adventure at a construction site ended with an iron nail embedded (嵌入) in her leg and an emergency call to the fire department, she found herself in awe (敬畏地). “As they gave me the medical treatment, I thought they could help everybody and do anything,” says the now 52-year-old.
In 2000, Andréa Speranza achieved her dream of becoming a firefighter, joining the Halifax Regional Fire Service. Her job was exactly as satisfying as she imagined it would be, except for one thing: she still hadn’t seen another woman in her role — not in a magazine, not on television, not in real life. Speranza decided that she wanted to help young women see that they, too, could have a career like hers.
The result was Camp Courage, a program for girls aged 15 to 19 who want to learn more about firefighting. In 2006, Speranza and about 20 volunteers welcomed their first 17 participants, attracting attendees through advertising in schools. Over the course of eight days, the girls discovered the ins and outs of being first responders: learning how to put out fires, delivering first aid and even using the jaws of life (救生颚) in a car.
Camp Courage now runs one session every year in Halifax and is free to attend. To offset costs, Speranza and her fellow campers fundraise by holding everything from car washes to comedy nights. Hopeful campers must also submit an essay describing how they plan to help their community, or a specific individual in need. And they have to deliver on their plan — from building a bench for a senior at a bus stop to launching a local chapter of the Kids Help Phone.
Hundreds of girls have passed through Camp Courage, and 36 percent are doing exactly what 52-year-old Speranza hoped they would: working as first responders across the country. This past summer, the camp held its first session for young women in Halifax, as well as its first national camp in Calgary with plans to roll out more the next year.
4. What do we know about Speranza?
A. She became a firefighter in her fifties. B. She suffered great pain due to an accident.
C. She helped many young girls attend school. D. She found her job as a firefighter undesirable.
5. What inspired Speranza to start Camp Courage?
A. Her family members’ advice. B. Her unrealized ambitions.
C. Growing social demands. D. Great lack of female firefighters.
6. Which of the following can best describe Speranza?
A. Intelligent and humorous. B. Courageous and inspiring.
C. Creative and influential. D. Knowledgeable and generous.
7. What message does Speranza’s story mainly convey?
A. Custom makes all things easy.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.
D. A bird in the hand is worth than two in the bush.

Alongside in-depth original research that shows how families are wrestling (试图解决) with technology’s new realities, the goal of this book is to let you make good choices about technology in family life.
The book is broken into three parts. In the introduction, it shares the tech-wise rules, which serve as valuable conversation starters for families and provide guidelines on managing technology use. It later adds more details to these rules in each chapter.
The first part of the book gives the family unit three key action steps in creating a “tech-wise family”. First, families can choose character by developing wisdom and courage together as a family. Second, they can shape spaces within the home for creativity, which helps a family create more than they consume. Third, families can structure time so that they use their resources to develop a rhythm of work and rest. It connects these three concepts to technology by giving tangible steps such as turning off devices at least one hour a day, one day a week, and one week a year so that their family can pray, feast, play and rest together.
The second part explores deeply into daily aspects of life, such as making sure that families use devices to benefit their lives, rather than allowing the devices to control their lives. It also shows how the writer’s family chooses to use car time for conversation rather than using devices to distract them, how within their family there is no secrecy on devices and how families use technology intentionally rather than using it aimlessly and alone.
The final part reads more like an expansion of the second and addresses how technology can distract us from what matters most. The writer argues, “We show up in person for the big events of life. We learn how to be human by being fully present at our moments of greatest vulnerability (脆弱).” These final chapters address how to show up and love people well through simply being truly present for loved ones.
8. What is the book aimed at helping family members do?
A. Make career choices. B. Live a simple lifestyle.
C. Put technology in its place. D. Offer guidance on buying books.
9. What does the underlined word “tangible” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Latest. B. Practical.
C. Unusual. D. Complex.
10. What is the second part of the book mainly about?
A. The distractions that often exist in families.
B. The secrets that should be kept in family life.
C. The benefits individuals bring to their families.
D. The ways the devices are used in everyday life.
11. How does the author of the text present the book’s final part?
A. By giving examples. B. By asking.
C. By listing statistics. D. By making comparisons.
D
From the roar of a crowd to the quiet of a library, sound and silence might seem like polar opposites. However, according to new research, our brains perceive them in the same way. Silence may not be a sound, but scientists say we can truly hear it.
In this new study, researchers examined how people experience silence using well-known auditory illusions (错听). The illusions are meant to test the perception of noise, but for the study, the team adapted them to measure people’s response to silence, instead.
“If you can get the same illusions with silences as you get with sounds, then it may be obvious that we literally hear silence after all,” Chaz Firestone, a co-author of the study and cognitive scientist at Johns Hopkins University, says in a statement.
In the study, participants were tricked by these “silence illusions” in a similar way to how people are typically fooled by the sound versions of the experiments.
The researchers prepared seven experiments and tested them on 1,000 study participants. In one experiment, researchers played a recording that sounded like background noise in a crowded place. In the first half of the recording, the background noise was interrupted by two separate periods of silence. In the second half, one continuous period of silence was inserted (嵌入). Researchers asked participants which silence felt longer — the combination of the first two periods of silence, or the second uninterrupted one. Most participants thought the continuous silence was longer, but it was actually the same length as the two shorter silences combined.
These results were consistent with previous research that examined auditory illusions, which used two separate sounds and one continuous sound. With that illusion, people also perceived the continuous sound as longer than the two separate ones together.
Similar findings across the seven experiments suggested that humans experience silence and sound in much the same way: They can distort (扭曲) our perception of time.
12. Why did researchers use auditory illusions in the new study?
A. To help people perceive sounds. B. To test people’s adaptability to noise.
C. To measure how people respond to silence. D. To remind people to be quiet in the library.
13. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. Illusions of silence fool people’s brains.
B. The three periods of silence are of the same length.
C. Sound is usually difficult for people to perceive.
D. Participants chose a recording and played it.
14. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A journal. C. A novel. D. A guidebook.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. We can truly hear silence like a sound
B. Sound and silence are actually the same
C. Auditory illusions affect our perception ability
D. Our brain has the ability to perceive sound and silence
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Adopting a pet is rapidly becoming the preferred option for many people wanting to add an animal companion. It’s true that many people are happy to part with thousands of dollars for purebred (纯种的) dogs and cats. 16
Homeless animals can make wonderful pets. People often assume that dogs and cats end up in shelters because they’re unwanted or badly behaved. There are many reasons owners may need to re-home their pet — divorce, hospitalization, or the time and money needed to care for a pet. 17
Adult animals have benefits. Shelters have a wide range of potential pets and there are many benefits from adopting a more mature dog or cat, such as helping avoid much of the craziness and mess associated with puppies. They will already be vaccinated (接种疫苗), so you will have fewer start-up costs. 18 A young animal’s behaviour may still be developing, whereas an older animal’s personality and behaviour should be evident, so no surprises.
19 You should only adopt a dog or cat from a trusted shelter or rescue group. Ethical establishments will have a behavioral trainer to assess the character of every dog and cat. The staff should ask you lots of questions to recommend the most suitable pet. Ongoing behaviour and training advice should be available, and you should be able to return the pet if things don’t work out.
There’s something else to keep in mind. It’s important for you to only select a pet that will suit your lifestyle, not a pet you feel sorry for. 20 There’s a lot of responsibility associated with managing animals appropriately.
A. Pets not only provide but call for company.
B. Animal experts can tell you how to adopt a pet.
C. Most importantly, what you see is what you get.
D. Choose an appropriate animal from a reliable source.
E. Consider the pet’s suitability for your family and lifestyle.
F. You need to think carefully about how you will care for it.
G. Some dogs and cats become lost, are not identified and are never claimed.

Kuppan was a good badminton player. His rise within the ranks of the badminton players of the school was impressive but unusual. One day he was nothing and the next day he was a member of the school team.
In the School Championships, he sprang a surprise by knocking out the top seed, Richard Lee, in the semi-final. In the final, he easily beat another competitor Abdul Rauf 15-3 and 15-10. He was the School Champion. It was unbelievable. The previous year he did not even get past the first round while this year he was the champion.
Success got into his head. He began to think he was really good. In fact, he arrogantly (傲慢地) told Richard Lee and the others that they would never beat him. He claimed he was simply too good for them in a league of his own.
Well, it was true that Kuppan was a good and skillful player. He had natural ability and talent. So he picked up the game very quickly and soon became the best. However, he did not realize that nobody can remain at the top all the time. What goes up must certainly come down. Kuppan thought he could stay up indefinitely.
The other players were annoyed by Kuppan’s declaration. They decided to train harder to beat the guy who had insulted (羞辱) them. They even trained on their own every day while Kuppan wandered around talking with pride about his success. The State Individual Championships were coming up,so was the Interschool Tournament. The school’s coach worked hard to improve the school players. All of them trained hard, except Kuppan. He would miss training or perform half-heartedly. He was more interested in entertaining the admirers that gathered around him. He thought he was too strong to be defeated.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Good afternoon, everyone,
I am honored to get first prize in the English speech contest and I’m glad to have the chance to speak here.
I think it was my determination and efforts that contributed to my success in the contest. In the last two years, I have tried my best to practice my spoken English. And my English teacher’s encouragement and help made me who I am today.
In a word, all I want to say is that we mustn’t give up whatever we decide to do. Only if we persevere can we achieve our goals.
Thank you very much!

The State Individual Championships reached us in time. At 7:30, Kuppan stepped onto the court confidently to meet his unknown competitor. It would not take long to finish the first round, he thought. The moment the first service was played, Kuppan found it was not going to be as easy as he had thought. He had great trouble performing his shots. After ten minutes on the court, he was sweating and out of breath. He looked washed out and listless. A couple of minutes later he lost the first round by 9-15.
Kuppan tried to make a difference in the second round. His competitor was simply too strong. Kuppan was defeated in the second round by 1-15. It was a great shame for him. He could not believe it but there it was. The next day the coach told Kuppan he had been dropped from the school team for the coming Interschool Tournament. Kuppan realized how foolish he had been. He finally knew that pride comes before a fall. He learned this lesson in a hard and painful way. He would not like to repeat this ever again.
