It was the dead of winter when Dad told me that he found a delicate small bag in the snow on his way out of a doctor’s appointment. “It was filled with seeds, so I planted them in pots in the living room window that gets such great light.” Dad was excited to have a planting project in the winter. He missed tending his garden plot, which was the size of a small farm.
I now lived out of state, but Dad reported in his daily phone calls, “These plants seem to double in size overnight. It’s only been a few weeks, and they are almost touching the ceiling.” Since Dad had green fingers, I wasn’t surprised about that. I couldn’t imagine what plant would do so well. I knew photos would not come soon because Dad had to use up the film in his camera and then developed the pictures.
During one call, Dad said, “Today at work, one of my co-workers was wearing a T-shirt with a screen-printed picture of the same leaf as my mysterious houseplants. I told him that I had those same herbs, which were growing like weeds, and I had to get rid of them.” Dad continued, “He eagerly took them off my hands, and now I can see out the window again.”
This awakened my curiosity, and I decided to do some research. In those days, that meant going to the library’s reference section. I did some reading and photocopied some articles. I mailed them to my father.
Dad called, “I just couldn’t believe what I read in the papers you sent. Those pictures are exactly what my plants looked like. No wonder my co-worker was so willing to take them.”
We both laughed till we cried when we realized my father had just raised a harvest of precious Chinese herbs used to ease pain.
24. Why did Dad plant the seeds?
A. Because it was the doctor’s advice.
B. Because he had a small farm at home.

B. He recognized the value of the plants.
C. He desired to learn from the author’s dad.
D. He wanted to show his knowledge about plants.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Seed catcher B. Window scenery C. Helpful co-worker D. Innocent gardener

Climate change, global warming, the greenhouse effect… these days nobody denies that there is something strange and worrying happening to the atmosphere. Scientists are puzzled by the rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. They are also afraid that the world may be a short way from what they consider as uncontrolled global warming.
At Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, meteorologists (气象专家) have been carefully monitoring (监测) the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere for the past 50 years. Until recently, there has been a gradual increase of around 1. 5 parts per million(ppm). In 2013 the figure rose to 2. 08 ppm and in the following year they recorded an increase of 2. 54 ppm.
Climate analysts feel that it is too soon to draw conclusions about the phenomenon although the public are concerned that the carbon dioxide emissions are getting out of control. Jason Samenow, the chief meteorologist in the American National Weather Service, thinks that people might have only a few years to find a solution to the problem instead of having decades. He believes that the Earth’s natural systems for absorbing the gas are breaking down, resulting in the uncontrolled greenhouse effect. He insists that something could happen if the Earth’s temperatures rose to such a degree that it was unable to contain the heat.
However, one interesting aspect of this climate change is that it is not happening in a uniform way around the world. Carbon dioxide levels in the South Pole are obviously lower. This suggests that something has happened in the northern hemisphere (半球) that set off the rise. Forest fires in North America might hold the answer to the puzzle, along with very hot summers in Europe.
The 2014 heat wave was certainly out of the ordinary. Statistics claim that more than 30, 000 people lost their lives as a direct result of the high temperatures. Scientists are being cautious in their interpretations. Most feel that it is too soon to say that a new trend has been set. All agree that the phenomenon needs to be closely observed.
28. According to Paragraph 1, what confuses scientists?
A. Uncontrolled global warming.
B. Something strange and worrying in life.
C. The effects of climate change on everybody.
D. The increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
29. From the changing amount of the carbon dioxide in the recent 50 years, we can learn that ________.
A. Every year the changes of the carbon dioxide is the same.
B. It is too soon to conclude global warming is now out of control.
C. Our world may be soon faced with uncontrolled global warming.
D. The amount of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing sharply.
30. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Hot summers in Europe. B. Forest fires in North America.
C. Low temperatures in the South Pole. D. North and South differences in climate change.
31. How will scientists deal with the high temperatures?
A. By setting a new trend soon. B. By giving a solution directly.
C. By observing the phenomenon closely. D. By experiencing high temperatures personally.
D
China’s space medicine experts have started planning to set up a “space hospital” to serve astronauts, according to Du Jichen, a leading scientist and president of the Aerospace Center Hospital in Beijing.
“We are carrying out extensive research, experiments and tests on the ground to advance the first work on a space hospital that can be fixed inside a manned spacecraft like our space station. The purpose of this project is that it will enable our space explorers to travel deeper and stay healthy during their journey,” said Du.
“The research, design and construction of such a space-based clinic will also help to lead the development of our country’s medical technology and hardware, thus promoting the entire medical and healthcare sectors,” Du said. Chinese space medicine experts have been discussing a sustainable approach to keep astronauts fit and treat possible health conditions in lengthy spaceflights.
“A mainstream idea is that we can place a small ‘medical complex’ inside the space station or other spacecraft that can meet the basic needs of diagnosis and treatment,” the scientist said.
Du said that with the medical facility, astronauts will be able to use self-examination instruments to make a diagnosis if they do not feel well, and then can take timely medical measures. Currently, medical support for astronauts mostly relies on doctors on the ground.
The biggest challenge in this program is that engineers must figure out how to pack medical devices into a very limited space, Du said, adding that they need to upgrade current technologies and use interdisciplinary (跨学科) teamwork to achieve this goal. Medical scientists and engineers have conducted a great deal of research to prepare Chinese astronauts for the missions, Du said.
They have focused on the impact on astronauts’ health during long-term space missions, as well as investigating how the special environment inside the space station, especially its weightlessness, will affect astronauts’ health, particularly their cerebral functions.
32. What does the “space hospital” aim to do?
A. Train astronauts in space. B. Keep astronauts healthy in space.
C. Ensure the safety of space explorers. D. Help to carry out more experiments.
33 What can be inferred from the text?
A. The space hospital will improve astronauts’ medical conditions.
B. The medical & healthcare system needs to be updated.
C. Long flights never cause health problems for astronauts.
D. Astronauts can get timely medical treatments.
34. What is the hardest for the project “space hospital”?
A. How to examine and treat astronauts. B. How to advance medical technologies.
C. How to combine many subjects together. D. How to fit medical equipment to a limited space.
35. Which may affect astronauts’ health from the last paragraph?
A. Spacecrafts. B. Doctors. C. Weightlessness. D. Spaceflights.

Scheduling your day is an important part of being productive. Instead of jumping from task to task on any given day, try grouping all the similar ones together and parking them on a specific day. By putting similar tasks together on the same day, you’ll stay in that “zone” longer, focusing only on what needs to be done in it. ____36____, you’ll stay focused on the central theme of the day’s work as you move from task to task.
How do you divide up themed days for productivity? First, start by thinking about why you want to do what you’re doing. ____37____. You don’t just want to clean your house because you have to, but because you want a safe, comfortable space. You don’t just want to finish your big project at work because it was assigned (分配) to you, but because you want to grow in your career, stay employed, or get a promotion. Set these intentions so you feel like you have something to work towards. ____38____.
You could also theme your days by project. Instead of devoting time every day to multiple projects, consider assigning each project its own specific day of the week for work. ____39____, while one that requires you to focus on marketing, communications, sales, or whatever else should be on another.
Try setting each day’s theme as an all-day event on whatever calendar software you use. ____40____. Just knowing your Thursdays are for client meetings, for instance, relieves you of the anxiety of deciding what to prioritize that day or when to schedule those meetings. It removes decision tiredness and keeps you on-task without you having to think too hard about what activity should go in which period during your busy week.
A. And that’s where the daily themes come in
B. Adding a “why” to your to-do list is valuable
C. But there’s more to time management than that theme
D. If all the things you have to do have something in common
E. Although you focus on similar tasks over the course of one day

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I never thought I had any natural talent when it came to music. Throughout my childhood, the fascinating world of music seemed like an impossible dream for me. I just showed no interest in singing songs or playing an instrument. However, my parents had a different plan for me. They insisted that I learn to play the piano when I was just six years old. Wanting to be a good daughter, I agreed to their wishes, even though deep down, I had no real interest in it. Never did I know that this decision would lead to an unexpected journey of self-discovery.
My piano teacher, Mrs. Johnson, was a kind and observant woman. She had a way of reading her students’ minds and understanding their true feelings. It didn’t take long for her to realize that my heart wasn’t fully absorbed in playing the piano. However, she continued to teach me patiently, hoping to stir a spark (火花) within me.
After about six months of lessons Mrs. Johnson approached me with an unexpected request. She asked me to perform at the year-end concert she had organized for her students. I was surprised and terrified at the same time. The thought of playing in front of an audience was challenging, considering my lack of passion for the instrument. Nevertheless, I couldn’t refuse my teacher’s request, so I could only agree.
Given my limited experience, I decided to choose a fairly simple composition for the concert. In order to perform well, I practiced the same composition for an hour a day for the next two months, perfecting the notes (音符) and the rhythm. I wanted to ensure that, in spite of my doubts, I would at least be able to give a decent (体面的) performance.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the concert arrived, and I woke up with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

M: Listen, Frank went blue last year when we went backpacking in the Teton Range. If he hadn’t come with me, he would have frozen to death. That sounds incredible, but it’s true. The temperature will drop to about 5 degrees Celsius in the evening in the mountains, even in summer.
W: Oh, I didn’t know that before. Okay, I’d better follow your advice. I don’t want a cold to ruin my trip in that I have no cold medicine in hand. Look, this will be a perfect walking stick for me. I found it at the foot of the mountain.
M: Good. Let’s move on.

【原文】M: Did you ever go to a summer camp?
W: Yeah. My parents always registered for interesting summer camps that I could do when I was still in school. I could go out in nature and try different things from different camps like an arts camp and a wilderness camp. One of the most impressive camps was a sailing camp, which became the only one I signed up for again in 2020. We would put down a big plastic sheet and run water down it and then we would slide down the hill. That was so exciting.
M: That’s a really cool summer experience. I lost interest in summer camps. Instead, I had a couple of summer jobs. One year, I think I was 17 or 18 and I worked in a hospital.
W: That does not sound like a typical summer activity. Don’t you think you’re still too young to do that.
M: Yes, but my mum knew that her college friend needed some assistants in the hospital.
W: Did that kind of job make you want to pursue medicine?
M: I didn’t even think about it. I just thought, wow, I’m earning pocket money.

M: Not yet. There are still twenty years away before I reach my retirement age, that is, 65 years old. One thing is for sure, I’ll attend a university for the aged.
W: Incredible! I thought you would choose to go fishing with your friends or play chess with them.
M: Ha-ha, I’d say you know me well, but I’ve always been expecting to be an all-round person. How I wish I had not wasted most of my time in playing video games when I was young, or else I would have achieved that goal.
W: Then what will you learn at the university?
M: I plan to sign up for some challenging classes, such as a calligraphy class and a painting class.
W: It sounds like you’ll be much busier than now.
M: Yes, and moreover, if there is a class in new technology, I’ll definitely attend it. I don’t want to be left behind by the world.
W: That makes sense. The aging population will grow steadily in the following years. I bet this kind of university will be both a place for learning and a spiritual home for older adults.
M: Same here.

C. Because it satisfied his eagerness for gardening.
D. Because the seeds would bring him rich rewards.
25. What does the underlined word “that” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Dad’s gardening talents.
B. The herbs’ growing quickly.
C. Dad’s efforts to tend the seeds.
D. A planting project in the winter.
26. What can be inferred about the co-worker?
A. He had little interest in the plants.
B. He recognized the value of the plants.
C. He desired to learn from the author’s dad.
D. He wanted to show his knowledge about plants.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Seed catcher B. Window scenery C. Helpful co-worker D. Innocent gardener
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. B 27. D

【答案】28. D 29. B 30. D 31. C

33. What can be inferred from the text?
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. C

E. Although you focus on similar tasks over the course of one day
F. So a project that requires a big focus on management should take up a whole day
G. This way, you’ll have a reminder at the top of the page about what to focus on each day

After about six months of lessons, Mrs.
注意:
1. 续写词数应150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the concert arrived, and I woke up with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The day of the concert arrived, and I woke up with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. As I sat in the dressing room, waiting for my turn to perform, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of uncertainty that lingered in the back of my mind. What if I made a mistake and embarrassed myself in front of everyone? As the previous performer finished and the sound of applause echoed through the concert hall, Mrs. Johnson approached me with an encouraging smile. “You’ve worked hard for this moment,” she said softly. “Just go out there and let the music speak for you.” Her words resonated with me, and I took a deep breath, stepping onto the stage.
To my surprise, the music flowed smoothly from my fingertips. As I played the first few notes, a sense of confidence began to wash over me. It was as if I had unlocked a hidden talent within myself that I never knew existed. The melody danced through the air, and every keystroke became an expression of my emotions. I felt a connection between the piano and myself, as if we were communicating through the language of music. Mrs. Johnson watched from the side with a proud smile. In that moment, I realized that talent is not something innate, but something that can be nurtured and discovered through passion and perseverance.
