For example, in some places, people are planting millions of trees to create new forests. In others, rivers are being cleaned up to make the water safe for fish and other animals. Scientists are also working hard to protect endangered species. However, ecosystem restoration is not an easy task. It requires the efforts of everyone. It was the worst typhoon to hit Hong Kong in ten years. It began to rain on the morning of August 16, 1971. At ten o’clock in the morning, Typhoon Rose was still 130 miles away but already the wind was blowing people’s umbrellas away. The wind became stronger and stronger. The typhoon shelters (避风 港) were soon full of boats. Ships that were too big to go inside the shelters put down more anchors (锚). Some very big ships went out to sea. It is safer for a big ship to be at sea in a typhoon because it cannot be blown onto rocks. Kai Tak Airport closed. No planes were able to take off or land. At 9:00 in the evening, all the lights went out. No one slept well that night. It is difficult to sleep in such bad weather. In Typhoon Rose, more than one hundred people died. 229 people were hurt and 66 of these had to go to hospital. 1,500 lost their homes. The people of Hong Kong will not quickly forget Typhoon Rose! This passage is mainly about      . A. the names of typhoons B. typhoons in Hong Kong C. Typhoon Rose D. the typhoons C C Noise is found all around us. The sound of traffic, the sound of an air conditioner, and the sound of leaves in the wind are all examples of noise that we hear around us in our environment all day. But do you know that different types of noise are grouped by different colours? Each coloured noise shows different intensity (强度) in different kinds of frequencies (频率). For example, violet noise has stronger intensity at higher frequencies, like the sound of a dentist’s drill. Brown noise produces deeper sounds such as heavy rainfall, because it shows stronger intensity at lower frequencies. White noise has the same intensity across all frequencies. One example of white noise is the noise made by fans. Pink noise, which sounds like a waterfall or ocean waves, is like white noise but has stronger intensity at lower frequencies. There have been several experiments about the advantages that noise brings to people. One study showed that 10 people in New York City, influenced by loud environmental noise, had better sleep when white noise was played. Another study showed that 16 adults actually improved their memory for vocabulary after listening to pink noise in their sleep. However, some people suggested that brown noise was the best noise for their sleep. So why do some people say that they really sleep better with some coloured noise? One reason is about sound masking, and it shows that white noise covers other noise, leading to better sleep. Another reason is self-conditioning (自我调节). For example, people who sleep better with brown noise may have conditioned themselves to fall asleep when they hear it. Understanding the different characteristics of each type of noise can help us to use them effectively in different situations. Every coloured noise has its benefits. It is your personal choice to decide which coloured noise is the best for you to get a good sleep. ( D )21.Which of the following is an example of brown noise? A. The sound of a waterfall. B. The sound of ocean waves. C. The sound of a dentist’s drill. D. The sound of heavy rainfall. D ( B )22. Which of the following statements is CORRECT? A. Pink noise is louder. B. Pink noise is similar to white noise. C. Pink noise has no intensity at high frequencies. D. Pink noise is only found in nature. B ( A )23. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Pink noise was helpful in improving people’s memory. B. White noise was the best noise for most people’s sleep. C. Violet noise could help people sleep in loud environment. D. Brown noise could help people sleep by conditioning itself. A ( D )24. What does “sound masking” mean in Paragraph 4? A. The act of putting a mask on to go to sleep. B. The way of making unwanted sound disappear. C. The method of hiding some disturbing noise with a mask. D. The process of adding background sound to cover unwanted sound. D ( B )25.
