This term, a new boy called Li Xiaoming joins our class. Our
English teacher, Mrs Green explains, “In the UK, first names come
before family names.However, it is different in China. Li is his
family name, just like your last name.” But my friend Tom doesn’t
listen carefully. At lunch, Tom shouts loudly, “Hey, Li! Let’s play
football together after school!” Xiaoming says with a low voice,
“But… Li is my family name. You can call me Xiaoming, like
friends do!” Other students start laughing. Tom’s face turns red,
“Oops!
