Some of the summer’s highlights include pianist Inon Barnatan, who plays Rameau, Ravel, Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff. Rockport’s season ends with the superb Borromeo String Quartet (四重奏), with guest pianist David Deveau and guest violist Barry Shiffman, in music by Bach, Mozart and Brahms-a concert that may very well distract you from the view. That was the year he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in the loss of his right leg. During his recovery, Lake generated a new idea of using his creative talents to understand and process the intense experience he was going through. He looked around his house and began making art with the resources closest to hand: old cardboard boxes and packaging that his parents had thrown away. Cutting up the cardboard and then reconstructing it, he created sculptural frames-his very first pieces of art. Fast forward 26 years and the now 43-year-old artist has made a career from that decision to “steal” his parents’ recycling box as a teenager. By cutting, and sticking together littered pieces of cardboard, Lake creates detailed life-size human sculptures. “My work is about transforming an old box and giving it a new life, valuing resources,” he says. “For that reason, I think it’s important that the cardboard is visible in my sculptures, and that people can still see they’re made from it. My works question how we perceive and value art and all the things around us. Arc they reusable? Do we need to buy that? Can we repair it?” By exhibiting his work in primary schools, Lake wants to show children that art is something that’s attainable, created from the same materials they play with in the classroom. “I have developed a way of working wherein the materials and the method mean that art can be created anywhere: a bedroom, a garage. Great art should not only be about the materials that you use, but also about the passion and effort you put into the work.” “It’s incredibly important for me to inspire a new generation of artists beyond the limit of economic barriers,” he explains.“ I want to create a level playing field for all and I hope that I’m a positive role model for them, both as an artist and as a disabled person. 4. What led James Lake to start making art with cardboard boxes? A. His interest in environmentalism. B. The inspiration from his parents. C. The easy access to waste cardboard. D. His desire to deal with his difficult time. 5. Why does James make the cardboard visible in his sculptures? A. To show his outstanding talent. B. To prove art works are easy to make. C. To stress the value of reusing resources. D. To make his works more attractive. 6. Which word can best describe James? A. Hard-working and polite. B. Generous and easy-going. C. Strong-willed and creatIve. D. Determined and humorous. 7. Which of the following can be the best title? A. Embracing the unknown. B. Thinking outside the box. C. Thinking twice before you leap. D. Stepping out of the comfort zone. C To communicate without words, humans use a host of gestures—whether a wave to wish someone goodbye or a thumbs-up to indicate approval. Now researchers have found, in a particularly polite example, the first documented evidence of a symbolic gesture used by birds. Some birds seem to flutter (拍翅膀) their wings to tell their mates they should enter the nest first, suggesting that the animals may communicate with a variety of gestures. Toshitaka Suzuki at the University of Tokyo and his colleagues set up hundreds of nest boxes in a forest populated with Japanese tits (山雀) near the town of Karuizawa. Each box had a 7.5-centimetre-wide hole, just big enough for one bird to squeeze through at a time. During breeding season, the team observed 321 nest visits across eight breeding pairs, with the tits often bringing food for their baby birds. If a bird couple arrived at the nest together, each tit would land on a nearby branch before entering. About 40 percent of the time, the female fluttered her wings for a few seconds, with her chest facing the male. This was quickly followed by the male entering the nest first, then the female. When neither bird fluttered its wings, which made up 44 percent of nest visitations, the females usually entered first. Only one male was seen repeatedly fluttering its wings, which was followed by the female entering first. Wing fluttering wasn’t observed at all when each bird arrived separately. The team believes that this discovery conflicts with earlier beliefs that only a few species use gestures to communicate. “They’ve done a really good job here of showing there is an association between this movement, this gesture, and then… the other bird doing something,” says Mike Webster, an ornithologist at Cornell University, who was not involved in the research. “It’s a really strong support to the notion that it’s a symbolic gesture. The bird that’s the receiver knows what it means, and it does what it’s supposed to do.” “We can conclude that this wing fluttering conveys ‘after you’.” says Suzuki. “This study is the first to show us clearly by evidence that birds can use wing movements to convey a particular meaning.” 8. What is the aim of Toshitaka Suzuki’s experiment? A. To find how the birds wings work in the wind. B. To observe whether birds treat their mates politely. C. To research whether birds can use symbolic gestures D. To prove whether birds can communicate with each other. 9. According to paragraph 2, why do tits flutter their wings? A. To show direction to the other bird. B. To signal their mates to enter the nest. C. To dry off their wings after flying in the rain. D. To scare away potential predators near the nest. 10. How do the researchers conduct the study on Japanese tits? A. By listing some examples. B. By reviewing previous data. C. By observing and comparing. D. By analyzing cause and effect 11. What’s the attitude of Mike Webster toward the study? A. Favorable. B. Opposed. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed. D Is social media really making young people antisocial (孤僻的)? A surprising new study finds that children and young adults who use these platforms the most are actually more active in the real world than others! The new findings come from a long-term project called the Trondheim Early Secure Study. Researchers collected information from about 800 children and young adults when they were 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old. This included interviews about each child’s use of social media from year to year. The goal was to determine if using social media affects a young person’s overall social skills. To the team’s surprise, participants frequently using these platforms did not see their social skills reduced. “On the contrary, we find that people who use social media a lot spend more time with friends offline than those who tend to limit their screen time,” says Professor Silje Steinsbekk from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s Department of Psychology. However social media can present challenges for children and teens. Although it offers a convenient and comfortable way for those with social anxiety to communicate, it can also lead to addiction and misuse. Studies have suggested that young people with anxiety are more easily affected by the negative effects of social media, which can worsen their symptoms and harm their mental health. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to monitor their children’s online activity and usage Despite the risks to some, the team says their findings debunk the belief that social media causes young people to become socially isolated. In fact, their frequent use of social platforms may actually give them more opportunities to connect with old and new friends and set up chances to go out and socialize outdoors. 12. What does the study focus on? A. The influence of social media on young people. B. The importance of young people’s social skills. C. Reasons for people becoming isolated from the community. D. Ways to prevent children from becoming addicted to social media. 13. Who may probably be more active in the real world according to the study? A. The one seldom surfing the Internet. B. The one experıencıng social anxiety. C. The one never making friends online. D The one using social media frequently. 14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3? A. Negative emotions cause teens to misuse social media. B. Kids are more easıly influenced by social media than adults. C. Online communication can help improve people’s mental health D. Social media is a double-edged sword for young people with anxiety. 15. What does the underlined word “debunk” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Confirm. B. Ignore. C. Explain. D. Challenge. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Libraries are highly regarded as symbols of local history and traditions, acting as places for a community’s shared memories. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me. “Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!” Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games. Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change. I was utterly dumbfounded (目瞪口呆的). 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I’d ever have! “You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” my classmates all said this to me, including my teacher. My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation. Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us. One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me. The day finally came! 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 With the shot of the starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as I could. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As expected, I was almost the last to cross the finish line. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 建平县高级中学高二上学期第一次月考英语试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1.What is probably the man? 4. He looked around his house and began making art with the resources closest to hand: old cardboard boxes and packaging that his parents had thrown away.”(在康复期间,雷克产生了一个新想法,即利用他的创造才能来理解和处理他正在经历的紧张经历。他环顾了一下自己的房子,开始用手边最接近的资源——他父母扔掉的旧纸板箱和包装——进行艺术创作。)可知,詹姆斯·莱克想处理困难时期的愿望让他开始用纸板箱创作艺术。故选D项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中““My work is about transforming an old box and giving it a new life, valuing resources,” he says. “For that reason, I think it’s important that the cardboard is visible in my sculptures, and that people can still see they’re made from it.”(他说:“我的工作是改造一个旧盒子,赋予它新的生命,重视资源。”“出于这个原因,我认为在我的雕塑中看到纸板是很重要的,人们仍然可以看到它们是由纸板制成的。)可知,詹姆斯在他的雕塑中让纸板可见是为了强调资源再利用的价值。故选C项。 6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“During his recovery, Lake generated a new idea of using his creative talents to understand and process the intense experience he was going through. He looked around his house and began making art with the resources closest to hand: old cardboard boxes and packaging that his parents had thrown away.”(在康复期间,雷克产生了一个新想法,即利用他的创造才能来理解和处理他正在经历的紧张经历。他环顾了一下自己的房子,开始用手边最接近的资源——他父母扔掉的旧纸板箱和包装——进行艺术创作。)以及最后一段中“I want to create a level playing field for all and I hope that I’m a positive role model for them, both as an artist and as a disabled person.”(我想为所有人创造一个公平的竞争环境,我希望我是他们的积极榜样,无论是作为艺术家还是作为残疾人。)可推知,詹姆斯是一个意志坚强且有创造力的人。故选C项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及倒数第二段中“By exhibiting his work in primary schools, Lake wants to show children that art is something that’s attainable, created from the same materials they play with in the classroom.”(通过在小学展出他的作品,雷克希望向孩子们展示,艺术是可以实现的,是用他们在教室里玩的同样的材料创造出来的。)和最后一段中““It’s incredibly important for me to inspire a new generation of artists beyond the limit of economic barriers,” he explains.”(他解释说:“对我来说,激发新一代艺术家超越经济壁垒的极限是非常重要的。”)可知,文章主要讲的是詹姆斯·莱克建立了一个成功的职业生涯,用回收纸板创作真人大小的人体雕塑,强调艺术中重视资源和可持续性的重要性。他的目的是让孩子们看到,艺术可以用日常材料制作,可以在任何地方创作,打破艺术创作的经济障碍。雷克是有抱负的艺术家和残疾人士的榜样,倡导艺术努力的包容性和激情。故文章最好的标题是“跳出固有思维模式”。故选B项。 C To communicate without words, humans use a host of gestures—whether a wave to wish someone goodbye or a thumbs-up to indicate approval. 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了研究人员发现鸟类使用象征性姿势交流的首个证据,揭示了日本山雀拍打翅膀示意伴侣优先入巢的习性。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“Now researchers have found, in a particularly polite example, the first documented evidence of a symbolic gesture used by birds. Some birds seem to flutter(拍翅膀) their wings to tell their mates they should enter the nest first, suggesting that the animals may communicate with a variety of gestures.(现在,研究人员在一个特别礼貌的例子中发现了鸟类使用象征性示意动作的第一个记录证据。有些鸟似乎会扇动翅膀,告诉它们的伴侣应该先进入巢穴,这表明这些动物可能会通过各种示意动作进行交流)”可知,Toshitaka Suzuki的实验目的是研究鸟类是否能使用象征性示意动作进行交流。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“About 40 percent of the time, the female fluttered her wings for a few seconds, with her chest facing the male. This was quickly followed by the male entering the nest first, then the female.(大约40%的时间里,雌鸟会拍打它的翅膀几秒钟,胸朝向雄鸟。这之后很快,雄鸟便会首先进入巢穴,接着是雌鸟)”可知,山雀拍打翅膀是为了向其伴侣发出信号,让它们先进入巢穴。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“During breeding season, the team observed 321 nest visits across eight breeding pairs, with the tits often bringing food for their baby birds. Wing fluttering wasn’t observed at all when each bird arrived separately.(在繁殖季节,研究团队对八对育雏的鸟夫妻进行了观察,记录了321次巢穴访问,其间山雀经常为它们的幼鸟带来食物。 根据第三段Mike Webster的评论“They’ve done a really good job here of showing there is an association between this movement, this gesture, and then… the other bird doing something(他们在这里做得非常好,展示了这种动作、这种姿态与另一只鸟随之做出某种行为之间的关联)”“It’s a really strong support to the notion that it’s a symbolic gesture. The bird that’s the receiver knows what it means, and it does what it’s supposed to do.(这强有力地支持了这样一个观点,即这是一种象征性的姿态。接收信号的鸟明白其含义,并据此做出它该做的行为)”可知,他对这项研究持赞同态度。故选A。 D Is social media really making young people antisocial (孤僻的)? However, social media can present challenges for children and teens. D. The one using social media frequently. A. Confirm. B. Ignore. C. Explain. D. Challenge. 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 With the shot of the starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as I could. Soon I was out of breath and slowed down. Other runners passed me one by one, and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind me. My legs were getting heavier and heavier, and I might fall down at any moment. However, I suddenly heard my classmates chanting my name. My desk-mate even ran along the tracks beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the month-long training we did together. As expected, I was almost the last to cross the finish line. Immediately, my classmates held my arms and urged me to walk on my feet and not to sit down. I was surrounded, with all kinds of drinks handed to me. I felt a kind of warmth I had never felt before. Even though I was almost the last to finish the race, I was full of confidence that I would improve in the future. That sports meet was an unforgettable experience. Sports are no longer about winning or losing. They give me a lot of confidence, both confidence in my fellow students and confidence in my own potential. I am no longer lonely, no longer afraid. 词汇激活 行为类 ①气喘吁吁:be out of breath/pant for breath ②摔倒:fall down/tumble ③抓住:hold/grasp 情绪类 ①充满自信的:full of confidence/very confident ②害怕的:afraid/scared 【点睛】【高分句型1】Other runners passed me one by one, and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind me.(由how many引导的同位语从句) 【高分句型2】I felt a kind of warmth I had never felt before.(由省略关系代词that引导的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
