Storms make trees take deeper roots. B 19. C 20. M: There was a beautiful garden with some flowers and a tree. Both the flowers and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knows that the flowers and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The flowers hated the tree’s shadow because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the flowers because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live. The situation became so serious that the flowers decided to run out of all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree fought back by not protecting the flowers from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the flowers were really weak and the tree was drying up. The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the flowers realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them, so they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to the garden, watering and fertilizing it better than any other patch four miles around. A Join the National Geographic Society in Protecting Our Planet The future of life on the Earth depends on the survival of our ocean, which regulates the climate and provides food and livelihood for billions of people. Will we become slaves for a superior artificial intelligence? While such questions may seem to belong to the field of science fiction the world-ending potential of AI is becoming an increasingly urgent topic — mostly due to the rapid ongoing development of popular technologies like ChatGPT. The more extreme concerns around AI involve what’s known as the singularity. In his 2010 paper The Singularity: A Philosophical Analysis, the philosopher David Chalmers describes the singularity as follows: “What happens when machines become more intelligent than humans? One view is that this event will be followed by an explosion to ever-greater levels of intelligence, as each generation of machines creates more intelligent machines in turn. This intelligence explosion is now known as the ‘singularity’.” The main worry is that, if such a singularity event were to occur, we’d no longer have authority over what happens in society. While influential figures across AI research express real concern about the singularity, however, American philosopher Daniel Dennett doesn’t buy it. As-he puts it, “I am not worried about humanity creating a race of super-intelligent agents, but that does not mean I am not worried. I see other, less dramatic, but much more likely, scenarios in the immediate future that are cause for concern.” He argues that smart technology presents us with more practical threats that have a far higher likelihood of occurring. As Dennett clarifies: “The real danger is not that machines more intelligent than we are will usurp (篡夺) our role as captains of our destinies, but that we will overestimate the comprehension of our latest thinking tools, easily ceding (让渡) authority to them far beyond their competence.” Take transport. It’s not just aviation and shipping industries that depend on GPS for safe and efficient navigation: how many individuals now turn to their smartphones instead of using a road map? As Dennett summarizes: “Use it or lose it is the rule of thumb cited at this point... how concerned should we be that we are dumbing ourselves down by our growing reliance on intelligent machines?” 28. What makes the future of AI become a hot topic? A. Advancement of technologies. B. Popularity of science fiction. C. Humanity of machines. D. Rise of unemployment. 29. Which of the following can best describe “singularity”? A. It is a fictional design that populates science novels. B. It is a hypothetical point where machines beat human intelligence. C. It is a mathematical model that predicts the development of AI. D. It is a possible situation where intelligence explosion is under control. 30. According to Daniel Dennett, what should we really worry about? A. The probable occurrence of singularity. B. Human’s creation of super thinking tools. C. Machine’s dominance over human beings. D. Human’s misjudgment of AI’s capabilities. 31. What would be the best title for the text? A. Super-intelligence: the future trend of AI. B. Overreliance: the real danger of AI. C Singularity: the uncontrollable nature of AI. D. Reliability: the wide application of AI. A 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第一段“While such questions may seem to belong to the field of science fiction, the world-ending potential of AI is becoming an increasingly urgent topic — mostly due to the rapid ongoing development of popular technologies like ChatGPT.(虽然这些问题似乎属于科幻小说的范畴,但人工智能终结世界的潜力正成为一个越来越紧迫的话题——这主要是由于ChatGPT等流行技术的快速发展)”可知,AI成为热点是因为技术进步。故选A。 根据第二段“One view is that this event will be followed by an explosion to ever-greater levels of intelligence, as each generation of machines creates more intelligent machines in turn. This intelligence explosion is now known as the ‘singularity’.(一种观点认为,随着每一代机器反过来创造出更智能的机器,这一事件将带来智能水平更高的爆炸式增长。这种智能爆炸现在被称为‘奇点’)”可知,奇点是“机器智能超越人类的假设点”。故选B。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The real danger is not that machines more intelligent than we are will usurp (篡夺) our role as captains of our destinies, but that we will overestimate the comprehension of our latest thinking tools, easily ceding (让渡) authority to them far beyond their competence.(真正的危险不是比我们更聪明的机器会取代我们主宰自己命运的角色,而是我们会高估自己对最新思维工具的理解能力,轻易地把权力拱手让给它们,远远超出它们的能力)”可知,Dennett认为真正的危险是人类对AI 能力的误判。 根据第三段“The real danger is not that machines more intelligent than we are will usurp (篡夺) our role as captains of our destinies, but that we will overestimate the comprehension of our latest thinking tools, easily ceding (让渡) authority to them far beyond their competence.(真正的危险不是比我们更聪明的机器会取代我们主宰自己命运的角色,而是我们会高估自己对最新思维工具的理解能力,轻易地把权力拱手让给它们,远远超出它们的能力)”和第四段“Use it or lose it is the rule of thumb cited at this point... how concerned should we be that we are dumbing ourselves down by our growing reliance on intelligent machines?(使用它或失去它是在这一点上引用的经验法则……我们应该多担心由于对智能机器的依赖而使自己变得愚笨呢?)”可知,全文围绕人类对AI的过度依赖及其潜在危险展开,B选项“过度依赖:人工智能的真正危险”最符合文章标题。故选B。 D Humans are so hardwired to fit in with the crowd that they often ignore potential risks.Following trends blindly isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental health trouble. Instead, says psychologist Pamela B. Rutledge, it’s perfectly normal. That is linked with a psychological concept that refers to humans’ core need to belong to a social group and bond with others. It’s considered to be one of humans’ basic needs. Multiple psychological analyses argue that human connections are as important as basics like food and shelter. Though following a trend on social media isn’t exactly as important as outrunning a tiger, human evolution (进化) has made our brains adapt themselves to social signals. Has social media changed how humans signal their social condition to one another? Not exactly, says Rutledge. “Rather, it has certainly allowed certain trends to circulate faster and farther than they would have otherwise. Take fashion: While trends once walked down from fashion runways toward common use over years, social media now allows mini-trends to emerge and die out within weeks.” People all find that trends elicit a pull, and psychologists have figured out reasons. Blame evolution again, Rutledge suggests. “Our brains are hardwired to notice things that are unusual,” she says. “If it’s not normal and other people are all doing it, we have to check it out.” Thus, we notice attention grabbers, giving trends even more reasons for people to follow them. No one is free from noticing trends, but one group in particular is more likely to follow trends: Teens and young adults. Older adults tend to feel more secure in their identity, a sense that may protect them from being as sensitive to every passing craze. Indeed, social attention varies by age, with older adults not paying as much attention to how they communicate and are linked with others as their younger counterparts. Individuals may be more: sensitive to social reward — positive input from members of their social circles — during midlife. 32. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph? A. By providing a solution to a problem. B. By giving an example from daily life. C. By stating a fact and then explaining its cause. D. By making a comparison with a common belief. 33. What role does social media play in the spread of trends according to the passage? A. It makes trends spread more rapidly and widely. B. It helps people better understand the nature of trends. C. It weakens the influence of traditional fashion trends. D. It changes the way humans signal their social condition. 34. What conclusion can be drawn about the relationship between age and following trends? A. Older adults are more sensitive to social attention than teenagers. B. Young people are less likely to be influenced by short-lived trends. C. Teenagers’ identity security makes them follow trends more actively. D. Middle-aged individuals may value social rewards from their circles more. 35. What is Rutledge’s suggestion about? A. The way to resist the temptation of trends. B. The reason why humans are attracted to trends. C. The impact of social media on trend-following. D. The psychological concept related to human behavior. C 33. A 34. D 35. 根据第一段中的“Humans are so hardwired to fit in with the crowd that they often ignore potential risks.(人类天生就很想融入人群,以至于他们经常忽略潜在的风险。)”可知,人们倾向跟风且常忽视风险;结合“That is linked with a psychological concept that refers to humans’ core need to belong to a social group and bond with others.(这与一个心理学概念有关,该概念指的是人类归属于一个社会群体并与他人建立联系的核心需求。)” 根据第二段中的“Rather, it has certainly allowed certain trends to circulate faster and farther than they would have otherwise.(相反,社交媒体无疑让某些趋势的传播速度比原来快得多,范围也广得多。)” 故选A。 从最后一段“Individuals may be more sensitive to social reward — positive input from members of their social circles — during midlife.(在中年时期,人们可能会更加敏感地感受到来自社交圈成员的积极反馈——即社会奖励。)” 第三段中 Rutledge 提到“‘Our brains are hardwired to notice things that are unusual,’ she says. ‘If it’s not normal and other people are all doing it, we have to check it out.’ Thus, we notice attention grabbers, giving trends even more reasons for people to follow them.( “我们的大脑天生就善于察觉那些不寻常的事物,”她说道。 The use of technology in sports is supposed to be able to provide accurate and instant feedback, with better decision-making and fewer errors than human intervention. ____36____ The annual tennis tournament, Wimbledon, made the decision this year to replace their line judges. They were switched out for AI that analyses camera footage, which should be faster and more accurate. Nevertheless, the electronic line calling system failed just a week into the 2025 championship. ____37____ This meant a point had to be replayed, which resulted in Sonay Kartal controversially winning the game. If technology needs humans to operate it in the first place, whose fault is it in situations like these where things go wrong? In football, VAR (video assistant referee) is also regularly used these days. A referee can ask for a VAR check, which means that if they are unsure of a decision, they can double-check their own judgement. However, last football season, VAR made oversights which angered a lot of managers, players and fans. ____38____ Despite this, before VAR, 82% of the decisions made were considered correct; now that figure is 96%. ____39____ Professor Gina Neff from Cambridge University says that we have a very strong, in-built sense of fairness. “The machine makes decisions based on the set of rules it’s been programmed to apply,” she said. “Right now, in many areas where AI is touching our lives, we feel like humans understand the context much better than the machine.” ____40____ A. But is that always the case? B. Patience is needed as the system matures. C. They said the system was not fit for purpose. D. Then who should carry the blame when mistakes happen? E. The ball-tracking technology was turned off by a person accidentally. F. So, why do we still not trust technology if it often improves a situation? G. Whether you trust it or not, technology is here to stay, including in sports. A 37. E 38. C 39. F 40. 【36题详解】 上文“The use of technology in sports is supposed to be able to provide accurate and instant feedback, with better decision-making and fewer errors than human intervention. Cristina has been diving with sharks for the last twenty-five years. Running in the Boston Marathon is on many runners’ bucket list, but you must qualify. I had trained hard in 2020, but Covid canceled the race — and again in 2021. In the fall of 2021, a friend asked, “Did you run in Boston?” “No, it was canceled,” I said. “Actually, they just held it.” “They don’t run it in the fall. No!” I was discouraged. I had missed my chance, but in 2022, the marathon returned to April, inviting qualifiers in 2019 — and I was going! Excited, I immediately continued my preparations. Race weekend arrived. I felt a mix of anticipation and loneliness — no one had come to support me. The bad weather ruined some sightseeing plans and made me feel emptier. Finally, race day came, and I joined the massive sea of 30,000 runners. I should have been thrilled, but I focused only on how lonely I was. I ran fast at the start, giving it everything I had. For the first few miles, I kept a strong pace, but soon my speed slowed, and more runners passed me. Two years of training had led to this moment — why wasn’t I performing at my best? “This is terrible,” I said to myself. “Why do I do this to myself? This isn’t fun. This is my last marathon.” Negative thoughts weighed on me with every step. I had spent thousands of dollars to get to Boston, yet I wasn’t enjoying it. The loneliness and slow pace seemed unbearable, and I wondered if it had all been for nothing. Then, I noticed the crowd — over 500,000 spectators (观众) lined the course, cheering and celebrating. I made eye contact with one man and raised my arm. “Yeah!” I shouted. I did it again at the next group, and joy flooded through me. Social interaction, something I usually loved, transformed my run. I realized I had been running all wrong. I began engaging with the crowd, giving high-fives, taking snacks, and laughing at their energy. Their excitement became mine. I moved closer to the barriers, connecting with as many people as I could. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That day, I learned a valuable lesson. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I moved closer to the barriers, connecting with as many people as I could. Every hand I touched sent another wave of happiness through me. I laughed and cheered with the spectators, feeling their energy push me forward. I took the snacks and drinks they offered, enjoying the small acts of kindness along the way. Each mile became easier as I focused on the people around me rather than my pace. The race no longer felt like a challenge — it became a shared celebration, and I felt completely alive. That day, I learned a valuable lesson. When trapped in disappointment and self-doubt, I lost potential and joy. Only when I shifted my attention to the positive moments and the support of strangers did everything change. Running became more than a personal challenge — it was a connection with others, full of energy and excitement. I laughed, cheered, and moved freely with the crowd, realizing that joy could transform even the hardest experience. I felt truly free and knew this memory would stay with me forever. 词汇激活 行为类 ①大笑:laugh/burst into laughter ②欢呼:cheer/shout in joy ③转移:shift/transfer/switch 情绪类 ①快乐:happiness/pleasure/delight ②失望:disappointment/despair 【点睛】【高分句型1】Only when I shifted my attention to the positive moments and the support of strangers did everything change.(运用了when引导时间状语从句和“Only + 状语从句”置于句首的倒装结构) 【高分句型 What is the man looking for? The King of the Universe. 25. When did Hawking get his doctor’s degree? A. In 1942. B. In 1965. C. In 1976. D. In 2018. 26. What was Hawking known for? A. Black holes. B. Empty holes. C. Steam engines. D. Light bulbs. 27. What does Stephen Hawking’s life tell us? A. A good beginning makes a good ending. B. Winners can deal with all the difficulties. C. No matter how bad life is, we should not lose hope. D. An interest in science will give us a lot in the life. C Will machines turn on humanity? Will we become slaves for a superior artificial intelligence? While such questions may seem to belong to the field of science fiction, the world-ending potential of AI is becoming an increasingly urgent topic — mostly due to the rapid ongoing development of popular technologies like ChatGPT. C. Singularity: the uncontrollable nature of AI. D. Reliability: the wide application of AI. D Humans are so hardwired to fit in with the crowd that they often ignore potential risks.Following trends blindly isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental health trouble. D The psychological concept related to human behavior. The use of technology in sports is supposed to be able to provide accurate and instant feedback, with better decision-making and fewer errors than human intervention. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。I'm looking for a birthday gift for my mom. Listen to the next question. There was a beautiful garden with some flowers and a tree. Both the flowers and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knows that the flowers under the tree couldn't stand each other. The flowers hated the trees shadow because IT left them only just enough light to live. Soon the flowers were really weak and the tree was drawing up. The garner wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the flowers realized that I was Better to help each other.
