Part 1: Read and Explore
One morning,Roberta,Peter, and Phyllis went out to get wild cherries. When they arrived at the railway
tunnel, they looked up at the trees above it.
"What's happening?"Peter said. "Look at the trees. They're moving." He was right. The trees were sliding down the hill.
"It's a landslide(滑坡),"Roberta said. "There has been a lot of rain. The earth is soft. It is moving and bringing the trees with it."
"They are going to fall on the railway line,"Phyllis said. "There'll be an accident if the train hits them. We must stop the next train."
"How do we do that?"Peter said eagerly. "The next train is due at 11:29.That's in five minutes. And the train is only about fifteen kilometres away."
"We can run towards the train and wave to the engine driver,"Phyllis said.
"He won't think there is anything wrong,"Roberta said. "We always wave to him."
"We need something red to wave,"Peter said. "Red is for danger."
"My petticoat is red,"Phyllis said. "I'll tear pieces off." She then tore stripes from the bottom of her petticoat.
"We need sticks to tie the stripes to,"Peter said.
The children ran to a nearby tree. With his knife,Peter cut off three thin branches.
He tied each of the stripes of the red petticoat to one of the branches.
"Now we have red flags,"he said. "When we wave these, the engine driver will know something is wrong. He will stop the train and ask us what is the matter."
The children ran through the tunnel and waited on the other side for the train to come. Finally, the train arrived. The children waved their flags. Roberta was so excited that she fainted and lay on the ground.
The engine driver saw the red flags and the children. He knew something was wrong. He stopped the train. A bad accident was prevented.
—Adapted from The Railway Children
Part 2: Skills Challenge
Task 1: Understand the Story(基础理解)
1. Why did the trees slide down the hill?
A. Because the children shook the trees to get cherries.
B. Because there was much rain and the earth became soft.
C. Because the train passing by caused the vibration.
D. Because the hill was too steep for the trees to stand.
2. What THREE things did the children do to make red flags?
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
Task 2: Talk About Feelings(情感表达)
3. Complete the sentences with proper words:
The children might feel ____________ when they saw the trees sliding toward the railway line. (anxious/relaxed)
Peter felt ____________ when he thought of using red things to warn the train driver. (excited/boring)
The engine driver might feel ____________ when he saw the red flags and stopped the train in time. (thankful/angry)
Task 3: Be a Problem Solver(问题解决)
4. Imagine your neighbor says, “Why bother stopping the train? It might not hit the trees anyway.” How would you use the information from the story to persuade them to take action?
Use at least one point from the story (e.g., the danger of trees falling on the railway line, the importance of preventing accidents).
Task 4: Critical Thinking(批判性思维)
5. Do you think the children’s actions were brave? Why or why not?
Support your answer with examples from the story.
【答案】
Task 1: Understand the Story(基础理解)
1. B
2.
Phyllis tore stripes from the bottom of her red petticoat.
Peter cut off three thin branches from a nearby tree with his knife.
Peter tied each stripe of the red petticoat to one of the branches.
Task 2: Talk About Feelings(情感表达)
3.
The children might feel anxious when they saw the trees sliding toward the railway line.
Peter felt excited when he thought of using red things to warn the train driver.
The engine driver might feel thankful when he saw the red flags and stopped the train in time.
Task 3: Be a Problem Solver(问题解决)
4. We can’t take the risk of doing nothing. The story says if the train hits the trees that slide onto the railway line, there will be an accident. Accidents may hurt the people on the train and damage the train, so we must take action to stop the train, just like the children did. It’s better to prevent the danger in advance than to regret it later.
Task 4: Critical Thinking(批判性思维)
5. Yes, the children’s actions were brave. First, they didn’t panic when they found the landslide and the coming danger—instead, they quickly thought of ways to stop the train. Second, they acted fast even though the next train was only 15 kilometres away and due in five minutes, which left them little time to prepare. Finally, Roberta even fainted from excitement while warning the train, showing how hard they tried to prevent the accident. All these actions prove they were brave.
