In the long river of Chinese history, time was not just the
fine sand in an hourglass (沙漏), but also the gong and drum
in the hands of the night watchmen. This is the special ancient
Chinese time system (系统) known as the “12 Hours of the
Day” or “12 shichen (时辰)”.
In ancient times, without modern clocks and watches,
people knew time by watching the position of the sun. They told
the time by watching where the sun is. Using water clocks and
hourglasses, a day was divided into twelve 2-hour periods.
One shichen was two hours. Each shichen was named after one of
the 12 zodiac animals (生肖). It was said that during each
shichen, its corresponding (相应的) animal would be active.
Here are some examples.
Zishi (子时): 11 p.m.-1 a.m.(“Rat” hour, when
rats actively look for food.)
Sishi (巳时): 9 a.m.-11 a.m.(“Snake” hour,
when snakes leave their holes.)
Weishi (未时): 1 p.m.-3 p.m.( “Goat” hour, it is
believed that goats will grow fatter if they eat grass during this
period.)
This system is not only about the daily activities of ancient
people, but also closely related to farming activities and
festivals. At night, the time was reported by the night watchmen.
They told people of the night-time shichen by beating drums and
gongs along the streets. The night watchmen were not only time
keepers, but also the guardians of the night in ancient times.
They calculated (计算) time by dropping water, letting sand
fall, or watching changes in the stars, reporting the time
without mistakes.
The 12 shichen is not only a mark of time, but also a
symbol of Chinese culture. It shows the ancient Chinese
understanding of time and nature.
