In 2021, my 68-year-old mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病). By January 2023, she’d lost her ability to complete everyday tasks. She was set on staying in her home and resisted the in-home care. I guessed it was because of what it represented: the acceptance of a disease that would slowly rob her of her memories and the ability to take care of herself.
We had to make the hard choice of finding her a nursing home for her safety and well-being. But we knew she wouldn’t be interested. So, we made up an excuse, telling her that it was an opportunity to spend the winter near my brother in sunny Florida while living at an apartment we had arranged for her.
My mum wasn’t the soft, affectionate mother I often longed for. She had never shown or talked about her feelings, but she was a great example of a hard-working, independent, entrepreneurial woman. My brother and I both have our own businesses, which is something she showed us was possible.
Since her diagnosis, watching her battle with accepting what was happening to her was heartbreaking, but I also felt closer to her when she began to express and share her feelings with me like a kid.
My brother arrived to meet us and we were shown to her apartment. A small kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and two bedrooms — one for her, and one for me and my brother to stay in when we visited. She seemed happy during moving in. For the next 10 days, I lived with her there. We went to meals together, reviewed the activity schedule, and I dropped her off and picked her up like a child at school.
The day came when I had to fly home, and I cried. As I shifted from being her daughter to being more like her parent, I realized how hard being a mother can be.
4. Why might the author’s mother resist in-home care?
A. She preferred living alone.
B. She disliked the caregivers.
C. She feared losing independence.
D. She intended to move to Florida.
5. How did the author and her brother convince their mother to move to the nursing home?
A. They told her a white lie.
B. They threatened her to go.
C. They offered her a free apartment.
D. They agreed to keep her company.
6. What kind of person was the author’s mother before the diagnosis?
A. Talkative and determined. B. Reserved but responsible.
C. Energetic and gentle. D. Creative but cold.
7. How does the author feel after her role change?
A. Confused. B. Content.
C. Awkward. D. Appreciative.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

Microplastics are everywhere. They have been found on the top of Mount Qomolangma and in creatures living the deepest sea. They’re in bottled water, and even in human body. This tiny plastics choke wildlife, disrupt ecosystems, and threaten human health, and they are extremely difficult to remove. Microplastics are tiny plastic pieces smaller than 5 millimeters. They come from everything from tires (轮胎), which are then broken down into smaller pieces, to beautiful decorations.
The planet is under great threat from microplastics, and water ecosystems are the first to suffer. One study from 2020 estimated there were 14 million metric tons of microplastics sitting on the ocean floor. Scientists have called microplastics one of this generation’s key environmental challenges. The pollution is only set to get worse with plastic production and pollution expected to increase in the coming years. Even under a variety of tactics, including plastic product reduction, waste management, and environmental recycling, microplastic pollution is still worsening.
Luckily, scientists in China have come up with a possible solution. A research team from Wuhan University used two organic compounds(有机化合物) from cotton and squid (鱿鱼) bones—known for removing pollution from wastewater — to create a biodegradable sponge (可生物降解的海绵). The sponge was able to absorb microplastics both by physically catching them and through electromagnetic attraction. They tested the sponge in four different water samples, and found it removed up to 99.9% of microplastics.
Previous methods for absorbing plastics tend to be expensive and difficult to make. The low cost and wide availability of both cotton and squid bones mean the sponge holds great potential to be used in absorbing microplastic from complex water bodies.
Shima Ziajahromi, a lecturer at Australia’s Griffith University who studies microplastics, called the squid-cotton-sponge method “promising” and said it could be an effective way to clean up the high risk and weak water ecosystem.
8. How does the author develop the first paragraph?
A. By presenting problems. B. By listing figures.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving a definition.
9. What does the underlined word “tactics” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Targets. B. Challenges. C. Strategies. D. Theories.
10. What do we know about the sponge developed by Chinese scientists?
A. Its application is far from practical. B. It is made from common materials.
C. Its ability depends on water conditions. D. It is inspired by previous study methods.
11. What is Shima Ziajahromi’s attitude towards the squid-cotton-sponge method?
A. Critical. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. D

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common for medical exams. The next time you get a body scan, there’s a good chance that AI might be analyzing the images.
A few years ago, four clinics in Poland tried out an AI system to discover polyps (息肉) and other conditions during colonoscopies (结肠镜检查). The AI works in real time, analyzing video from a camera inside the colon. If it spots something, it will highlight the area for the doctor to see. “In this particular one there’s a green box, showing where the polyp might be,” said Marcin Romanczyk, a gastroenterologist (胃肠病学家) at H-T Medical Center in Tychy, Poland, who led the study.
The clinics were collecting data on whether the AI system worked. It turns out it did, but when Romanczyk and his colleagues reanalyzed the data, they found something else: After they’d grown used to using an AI-assisted system, doctors became significantly worse at discovering possible polyps when the AI was switched off, discovery rates of possible polyps falling from 28.4% to 22.4%.
Romanczyk says he’s not quite sure why it’s happening, but he has some theories. “We are subconsciously (潜意识地) waiting for the green box to come out to show us where the polyp is and we’re not paying so much attention,” he says. In other words, the doctors seemed to become quickly dependent on AI systems catching the polyps. The doctors appeared to behave worse at spotting polyps and other conditions during colonoscopies on their own.
As for doctors’ losing critical skills because of AI, Johan Hulleman, a researcher who studies human reliance on AI, argued, “I think three months seems like a very short period to lose a skill that you took 26 years to build up.” He believes statistical variations (统计变异) due to a number of factors such as age of the patients might be behind the drop.
12. What did the AI system do during a colonoscopy?
A It analyzed video and marked potential polyps. B. It performed the total procedure automatically.
C. It collected data on patients’ age and conditions. D. It helped train gastroenterologists’ critical skills.
13. What happened when the AI system was turned off?
A. It continued to analyze the video. B. The patients ’conditions worsened.
C. The doctors did worse in spotting polyps. D. The doctors were more focused on exams.
14. What does Romanczyk’s theory mean?
A. The AI system often missed polyps. B. The green box always made mistakes.
C Doctors ignored the AI’s recommendations. D. Doctors might become dependent on the AI.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Unmatched Skills of Gastroenterologists B. A Warning to AI’s Two-sided Effects in Clinic
C. The Technical Process of the Colonoscopy D. AI Becoming Dependent on Doctors As Well
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“After they’d grown used to using an AI-assisted system, doctors became significantly worse at discovering possible polyps when the AI was switched off, discovery rates of possible polyps falling from 28.4% to 22.4%.(在他们习惯了使用人工智能辅助系统之后,当该系统关闭时,医生们在发现可能存在的息肉方面的能力明显下降,息肉的发现率从28.4%降至22.4%)”可知,当AI被关闭后,医生发现息肉的能力显著下降。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In other words, the doctors seemed to become quickly dependent on AI systems catching the polyps.(换句话说,医生们似乎很快就对人工智能系统检测息肉的功能产生了依赖)”可知,罗曼齐克的理论意味着医生可能会依赖人工智能。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common for medical exams. The next time you get a body scan, there’s a good chance that AI might be analyzing the images.(人工智能(AI)在医疗检查中的应用正日益普及。下次您接受身体扫描时,很有可能会有人工智能在分析扫描图像)”结合文章介绍了AI在医疗中的有效应用,也揭示了其带来的潜在风险——医生可能过度依赖AI。可知,B选项“对于人工智能在医疗领域的双面效应的警示”最符合文章标题。故选B。

Dear fellow students,
After watching the military parade on September 3rd, I feel inspired to share my thoughts on “What abilities are needed to build a tech future”.
To shape a tech-driven future, I believe we need two key abilities: creative thinking and persistent learning. First, creativity allows us to imagine and come up with innovative solutions that push boundaries. Second, technology develops rapidly, so continuous learning is essential to keep up with new knowledge and skills.
These qualities enable us not only to adapt to changes but also to become future pioneers who can develop breakthroughs that benefit society. Let’s cultivate these skills together to contribute to our nation’s technological progress.
Thank you!

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mike and his mother, Sheila, had only recently moved to a new home due to Sheila’s job transfer. Mike’s father had died two years before, so Sheila worked hard to provide for herself and Mike.
One day, Mike saw four construction workers when he was on the way home with his mother. The men were repairing a portion of the road near Mike’s house. It was terribly hot, and Mike’s heart went out to the tired workers. That’s when Mike had an idea. He rushed inside, opened the fridge, and grabbed some bottles of lemonade (柠檬水) made by themselves. Then he hurried up to the workers.
“Excuse me, sir,” he said in a loud voice. “You look very tired. Please have the lemonade. You will feel better!” The workers paused from their work and exchanged looks, smiling and delighted that the young boy was so kind to them. “Thank you very much, young man,” one of them replied as he accepted the lemonade. “It’s okay,” Mike said with a smile and then waved goodbye to them.
From that day on, Mike brought lemonade or water to the workers every day. Soon enough, he became familiar with all of them. One day, when Mike went to offer them water, the workers observed he wasn’t as cheerful as before. They were worried and asked him why he seemed upset. Pouting (嘴) his lips, the boy replied, “My birthday is only two days away and my mother will be caught up with some work that day. We are new here, so I don’t have any friends. I will be alone.”
The workers felt bad for Mike, thinking he didn’t deserve to be sad ever — particularly not on his special day-so they came up with a plan.

Mike’s birthday came and he was at home alone when suddenly the doorbell rang.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The next day, the construction workers decided to wait for Sheila on her way to work. When they walked to Sheila, she was confused. They explained everything to her, including how Mike would bring them water daily. Sheila was incredibly proud of her son and couldn’t believe he had been so kind to the workers. “Actually, we want to celebrate his birthday with him. We know he really doesn’t want to be left alone on his birthday. We hope you don’t mind,” the workers said. Sheila was more than grateful to them for being so thoughtful and kind to her son and she accepted their plan.
Mike’s birthday came and he was at home alone when suddenly the doorbell rang. Mike wondered who it could be. When he opened the door, he was surprised to find a group of four men — construction workers — in front of him. “We’re here for your birthday, Mike!” When Mike, almost crying about being alone, saw the workers, his face lit up. Surprised and excited, he welcomed them to come in. The construction workers not only bought Mike a birthday cake, but also helped decorate the living room with balloons and a happy birthday banner. In the following time, they enjoyed the celebration to the fullest.

5 How did the author and her brother convince their mother to move to the nursing home?
A. They told her a white lie.
B. They threatened her to go.
C They offered her a free apartment.
D. They agreed to keep her company.
6. What kind of person was the author’s mother before the diagnosis?
A. Talkative and determined. B. Reserved but responsible.
C. Energetic and gentle. D. Creative but cold.
7. How does the author feel after her role change?
A. Confused. B. Content.
C. Awkward. D. Appreciative.

A. Critical. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
A. It analyzed video and marked potential polyps.
C. Doctors ignored the AI’s recommendations.
