2. If we are in ________, we must call the police for help in time so that we can keep ourselves ________.
A. dangerous; safe B. trouble; safe C. trouble; safely D. danger; safety
【答案】B

3. The old bank, ________ appearance is not a pretty sight, is extremely beautiful on the inside.
A. whose B. which C. what D. its
【答案】A
故选A。
4. She ________ live alone. But she ________ living alone because she feels lonely.
A. used to; doesn’t used to B. is used to; was used to
C. used to; is not used to D. was used to; doesn’t used to
used to do“过去常常做某事”,be used to doing“习惯于做某事”。 结构;第二空,根据“because she feels lonely”可知,她不习惯独居,“不习惯于”应该用“be not used to doing sth.”结构。故选C。
5. Shirley had quit her well-paid job and ________ as a cleaner in the neighborhood when I came across her last month.
A. works B. was working C. worked D. has worked

分析句子结构可知,“success ... a sum of small efforts made each day and often ... years to achieve.”
7. If he ________, he ________ that mistake.
A. was warned; would not make B. had been warned; would not have made
C. would be warned; had not made D. would have been warned; had not made
三种常见的if引导虚拟语气的情境: 一、与现在事实相反的情况:if从句动词用过去式(be动词用were),主句用should/would/might/could+do;二、与过去事实相反的情况:if从句动词用had+done,主句动词用should/would/might/could+have done;三、与将来事实相反的情况:if从句动词用were to do或should+do或动词过去式(be动词用were),主句动词用should/would/might/could+do。
8. People may become too ________ on machines, ________ their thinking ability gradually.
A. depend; lose B. rely; to lose C. rely; losing D. dependent; losing

“People may become too dependent on machines”是一个完整的句子,后面“… their thinking ability gradually”是结果状语,故第二空为非谓语动词。
9. The possibility _________ there is life on other planets in the universe has always inspired scientists to explore the outer space.

10. We ________ an idea that we could call for the tourists to pay attention ________ the environment.
A. came up; to protect B. came up with; to protecting
C. came across; on protecting D. came out; about protecting

Baldrica is a scientist with Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA). On Jan. 1, 2023, neighbors called her, saying there was a dolphin swimming alone in the stream.
A team from CMA watched the dolphin for about 18 days. And he didn’t leave the stream. “He behaved normally at that point but he had been in such a small area with people around, so we were worried about his interactions with humans, like Izzy’s story,” Baldrica said.
Izzy had been in an area for a long time and dealt with many different interactions with people. Scientists saved her a few months ago from Texas. A few years of interactions with humans caused her health to become worse. She now lives at a zoo. The workers there said Izzy depended so much on the public for food that she didn’t know how to find her own food.
Baldric worried that this might happen to this dolphin. So CMA believed it would be good to help the dolphin leave the area. To get back into the open water, the dolphin had to swim through a small opening under a bridge. But the dolphin seemed afraid to go through this opening.
A team of 28 people formed a human chain to create a barrier (屏障) to guide the dolphin under the bridge and back to safety towards Tampa Bay (坦帕湾). They had to stay shoulder to shoulder without giving the dolphin a chance to slip by. They had somebody behind them hitting something on a boat to make loud noise, and then they splashed the water and moved forward to the animal. So they gave the animal the choice to swim through the bridge on his own.
“People in the area are kind. They worked with us to help protect the dolphin from danger. They also gave a hand when we tried to save the dolphin,” Baldrica said.
47. Who told Baldrica there was a dolphin in the stream?
A. Her neighbors. B. A member of CMA.
C. A man swimming in the stream. D. One of her friends living nearby.
48. Why did the team help the dolphin leave the stream?
A. To help him behave normally.
B. To prevent humans from hurting him.
C. To lead him to a body of water with enough food.
D. To help him avoid having too many interactions with humans.
49. What happened to Izzy?
A. She got used to being fed. B. She hated living at the zoo.
C. She became too lazy to swim. D. She missed her life in the stream.
50. What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Why the team tried to send the dolphin back.
B. How the team played with the dolphin happily.
C. Why the team created a barrier to stop the dolphin.
D. How the team helped the dolphin out of the stream.
51. As for the people in the area, Baldrica felt ________.
A. worried B. interested C. grateful D. disappointed

Researchers who examined DNA from famous German musician Ludwig van Beethoven have found something new about his health.
They found that he had a risk for liver disease. The DNA also showed that Beethoven caught the virus hepatitis B (乙肝病毒) in the last months of his life. The virus hurts the liver. The findings suggest Beethoven’s liver problems were enough to cause the liver failure widely believed to have killed him. The musician was also believed to have been a heavy drinker, which can influence the liver.
The musician himself wrote that he wanted doctors to study his health problems after he died. Axel Schmidt is a researcher who helped lead the research. He said that Beethoven’s sicknesses had “sometimes prevented his creative work.” Schmidt added that for many doctors, “it has always been a mystery” what exactly killed him.
Since his death, scientists have long tried to piece together Beethoven’s medical history. And they have offered many explanations for his many health conditions. But new examination technology and methods now make it possible to revisit (再次讨论) health and death information by studying ancient DNA. The DNA were collected from hair cut from Beethoven’s head.
Getting enough genetic (遗传的) material was difficult because DNA in hair gets cut up into very small pieces. But finally, after using up almost 3 meters of Beethoven’s hair, the team finished it.
The question of what caused Beethoven’s hearing loss remains unanswered, said Ohio State University’s Dr Cooper. He said that the mystery might continue forever because DNA can not show us everything about our health. However, Cooper added that the mystery is part of what makes Beethoven so interesting and popular. “The fact that we can’t know is OK,” he said.
52. What did researchers find by examining Beethoven’s DNA?
A. Why he kept fit in the last months. B. How he caught the virus hepatitis.
C. What might have caused his death. D. What he drank most while young.
53. What did Beethoven ask doctors to do?
A. Examine his DNA later. B. Develop his creativity.
C. Keep his mystery forever. D. Make a study of his health.
54. What difficulty did scientists have in examining Beethoven’s DNA?
A. The technology was out of date. B. It was hard to collect enough DNA.
C. There wasn’t enough time to do research. D. It took a lot of time to find Beethoven’s hair.
55. It is still a mystery to people ________ according to the passage.
A. why Beethoven couldn’t hear
B. what stopped Beethoven from creating music
C. how many explanations there were for Beethoven’s death
D. what made it possible to revisit Beethoven’s death information
56. What does Cooper think of Beethoven’s mystery?
A. It may live a long time. B. It will be cleared up soon.
C. It is a headache for scientists. D. It encourages people to study DNA.

Have you ever wondered how an animal is feeling? A new study shows that it might not be as difficult to understand as you think. Scientists say humans can tell if chickens are happy or sad by listening to their calls.
To find out how well humans understand chickens, scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia did a study. They made recordings by training a group of chickens to recognize different situations. In one of the situations, there was a bowl behind a door having delicious food. In the other, there was a bowl with nothing in it. When the chickens knew there was something to eat behind the door, their calls were fast and high. When there wasn’t anything to eat behind the door, they made long and low calls.
The scientists played 16 recordings of chicken calls to 194 volunteers. Half of the recordings were from chickens expecting delicious food and half were from chickens feeling sad about having nothing to eat. The result showed that 69% of the volunteers gave correct answers about if the chickens were feeling happy or sad.
Scientists say the study is useful when chicken farmers want to keep their chickens happy.

Yours,
Li LEI
Dear David,
As is known to all, short videos are very popular with Chinese people nowadays. I’m glad to talk about them. As its name suggests, most short videos are less than 5 minutes, even some of which only last for a few seconds. Most of their topics are related to our daily life. They are fun to watch and easy to make. It’s just like a huge stage where everyone can have his or her own voice.
However, every coin has two sides. On one hand, short videos are a good way to spread news or knowledge. Through short videos, people can share interesting things, gain knowledge and support, or just relax themselves. On the other hand, not all short videos are meaningful and do good to us. Besides, watching short videos too much may be a waste of time and is harmful to our health.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s a good way to relax oneself by watching short videos, but it might be wiser for us to limit the time we spend on it.
Yours,
Li Lei
