Kevin Beard is my homeroom teacher. I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears on his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “success.” I realized his tears were out of happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his General Equivalency Diploma (GED,普通同等学历证书), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking different jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally found a job with some promise: a printing company. Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, and was kind of excited about giving school another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), who has more than ten years of experience, learning, practicing and correcting mistakes, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain.” In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his home wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words.” This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. His next step is college. “Now that I’ve got my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.
4. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?
A. He was worried about his future. B. He had reached one of his goals.
C. He failed to pass the GED exam. D. He was touched by a warm story.
5. How did the printing company respond on hearing of Kevin’s education?
A. They treated him badly. B. They hired him at once.
C. They left him some hope. D. They liked his personality.
6. Why did Kevin put the test results on the wall?
A. To show off his success. B. To mark his own progress.
C To let others know his strength. D. To remind himself of his failure.
7. What does Kevin’s story show?
A. Always prepare for a rainy day. B. He who laughs last laughs best.
C. Nothing can stop a willing heart. D. The early bird catches the worm.

When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do? Do you lie on your bed and play on your phone? Many people find that this kind of behaviour only brings boredom and emptiness. Unlike what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time according to a new point. Being able to take part in enjoyable activities in a meaningful way during your free time is important.
“Leisure (闲暇) doesn’t improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively” James Wallman, the author of Time and How to Spend it, explains that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like“superfoods”. The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us can lead to the flow state. These “superfoods” help you achieve a higher “leisure quotient” (LQ, 玩商). LQ is used to describe one’s ability to enjoy oneself and play.
A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life and knows how to keep a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and more cheerful. A research shows that people with high LQ feel more pleased and generally avoid mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive activities like viewing short videos, people with high LQ actively choose activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback (反馈). According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; greater connection with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social position.
Next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try some experiences that can benefit you or add value to your life. It’s never too late to improve your LQ!
8. What is the common belief about “play”?
A. It brings happiness. B. It is a waste of time.
C. It improves life quality. D. It helps relax meaningfully.
9. What does “flow state” refer to according to James Wallman?
A. Focusing on the present. B. Feeling bored and empty.
C. Enjoying super tasty food. D. Avoiding challenging tasks.
10. Which is an example of positive feedback from high-LQ activities?
A. Watching hours of TV plays. B. Spending all day alone lying.
C. Mastering a new dance move. D. Surfing the internet aimlessly.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. LQ as the ability to relax. B. Skills to better your LQ.
C. Usages of LQ in leisure time. D. Links between LQ and health.

Suppose you are a renter and want to change the color of your rental room’s walls, but you don’t want to repaint them back to their original (原先的) color before you move out. That’s where a new type of paint comes, which can simply be removed from a wall and make things easier for renters.
This new type of paint, called Unpaint, was created by the Colombian company Glasst Innovation by mistake. Originally, the company’s research team was in search of a material to replace single-use plastics in the building industry. They wanted it to be made from renewable sources to reduce the environmental footprint of building materials. After years of hard work, they found something else: a liquid plant-based polymer (聚合物) with some truly unique physical qualities. They called it Glasstommer. “Our journey toward finding the right natural and renewable sources included lots of researches, teaming up with agricultural teams,” Botero, a researcher of the company, said, “Good luck also played a role.”
According to Botero, Unpaint can be applied like regular paint, using brushes and rollers. However, instead of absorbing (吸收) into the corners of walls like regular paint, Unpaint dries into a film that only stays on the surface that it is being applied to. This means that when the time has come, the paint can easily be removed from the wall and then thrown away.
Currently, Unpaint comes in 5,000 colors, and could be a boon for renters who want to change the color of their living space, but do not want to have to repaint when they leave the house. Beyond home walls, Unpaint opens up possibilities for seasonal decorations. For those who love to change their decoration for holidays, they can use Unpaint to turn their kid’ s room into a seasonal wonderland. Walls, furniture, and even windows can be painted for the season and effortlessly returned to their original state.
12 How was Unpaint created?
A. By working with international scientists. B. By studying traditional painting methods.
C. By researching renewable building materials. D. By improving existing plant-based polymers.
13. What makes Unpaint different from regular paint?
A. It absorbs into corners easily. B. It dries into a removable film.
C. It needs special tools to apply. D. It features fewer color choices.
14. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Problem. B. Deal. C. Topic. D. Benefit.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Unpaint, a great accidental creation B. Glasstommer, a magic reusable paint
C. Glasst Innovation, a special company D. Botero, an inventor changing our life

“Leisure (闲暇) doesn’t improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively,” James Wallman, the author of Time and How to Spend it, explains that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like“superfoods”.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第一段“Unlike what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time according to a new point.(与许多人所想的不同,从现在的角度来看,玩耍并不仅仅是浪费时间。)”
根据第二段“The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman.(“超级食物”活动让你进入一种“心流”状态,这是一种“活在当下,真正享受自己”的状态,Wallman补充道。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; greater connection with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social position.(根据Wallman的说法,这种积极反馈的例子包括:一个你可以与他人分享的难忘故事;一种新的技能或不同的世界观;与现实世界的联系更紧密;改善人际关系或提高社会地位。)”
通读全文,尤其是倒数第三段“A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life and knows how to keep a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and more cheerful. A research shows that people with high LQ feel more pleased and generally avoid mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.(高玩商(LQ)通常意味着一个人能很好地掌控自己的生活,并且知道如何保持一种平衡的生活方式,这种生活方式能让他们更健康、更快乐。一项研究表明,玩商高的人会感到更愉悦,而且一般不会患上精神疾病。与此同时,日本管理专家大前研一(Kenichi Ohmae)指出,那些会玩的人将会取得成功。)”可知,本文主要讲的是玩商(LQ)的概念,高玩商对生活质量的提升作用,以及高玩商与健康之间的联系(如使人更健康、更快乐,避免精神疾病等),因此主旨是D选项“Links between LQ and health.(玩商(LQ)与健康之间的关联)”。故选D。

根据第三段“However, instead of absorbing (吸收) into the corners of walls like regular paint, Unpaint dries into a film that only stays on the surface that it is being applied to. (然而,与普通油漆不同,Unpaint不会像普通油漆那样被吸收到墙角,而是会干燥成一层只停留在涂抹表面的薄膜)”可知,Unpaint与普通油漆的不同之处在于它干燥后会形成一层可去除的薄膜。故选B。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Currently, Unpaint comes in 5,000 colors, and could be a boon for renters who want to change the color of their living space, but do not want to have to repaint when they leave the house. Beyond home walls, Unpaint opens up possibilities for seasonal decorations. For those who love to change their decoration for holidays, they can use Unpaint to turn their kid’ s room into a seasonal wonderland. Walls, furniture, and even windows can be painted for the season and effortlessly returned to their original state.(目前,Unpaint有5000种颜色,对于那些想要改变居住空间颜色,但又不想在离开房子时重新粉刷的租户来说,这可能是一个boon。
根据第二段“This new type of paint, called Unpaint, was created by the Colombian company Glasst Innovation by mistake. (这种新型油漆被称为Unpaint,是哥伦比亚公司Glasst Innovation偶然创造的)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了Unpaint这种偶然创造的伟大油漆,所以“Unpaint,一个伟大的意外创造”适合作为文章标题。故选A。

由上文“Remember the last time you spent some time alone? And it doesn’t include the time when you are sending a written message on your smart phone or checking out someone’s pictures on any social networking site. (还记得你上一次独处的时光吗?这里的独处不包括你在智能手机上发信息或在社交网站上浏览别人照片的时间)”及下文“It’s hard, isn’t it? (这很难,对吧?)”可知,上文明确了“独处”的定义,空处需承接该定义,进一步强调符合要求的独处状态,引出下文“这样的独处很难”的感慨。B选项“Just being alone, not lonely but alone. (仅仅是独处,不是孤独,而是独自相处)”精准呼应上文对“独处”的限定,明确了讨论的核心是纯粹的独处而非孤独,符合语境。故选B。
【17题详解】

由下文“Do you feel puzzled about what to do? It’s good to ask people for advice, but finally it’s going to be your decision. (你是否对该做什么感到困惑?向别人征求意见是好的,但最终还是要你自己做决定)”可知,下文围绕“对问题感到困惑、需要自己做决定”展开,空处需提出与“陷入问题、感到困惑”相关的疑问,引出下文的内容。A选项“Is your mind caught up in a problem? (你的思绪是否被某个问题困住了?)”中的caught up in a problem与下文的feel puzzled about what to do相呼应,符合语境。故选A。
由上文“Take some time off, go for a long walk or a run, and you’ll find the answer you’ve been looking for. (抽出一些时间,去散散步或跑跑步,你会找到你一直在寻找的答案)”及下文“More importantly, it will help you enjoy the little things that you never realized mattered. (更重要的是,它会帮助你享受那些你从未意识到的重要小事)”可知,上文建议通过独处(散步、跑步)寻找答案,下文进一步说明独处的另一个好处,空处需承接上文,说明独处(散步、跑步)的直接作用。E选项“So staying alone can help you clear your head. (所以独处可以帮助你理清思绪)”中的clear your head与上文find the answer相呼应,解释了独处能找到答案的原因,同时为下文的“享受小事”做铺垫,符合语境。故选E。
【20题详解】
由上文“When you’ re alone, you can do what you want to do as you won’t be afraid of being judged by someone else. (当你独处时,你可以做你想做的事,因为你不会害怕被别人评判)”及下文“Actually, happiness starts with YOU, (事实上,幸福始于你自己)”可知,上文说明独处时可以自由做想做的事,下文提及“幸福”,空处需连接“自由做想做的事”和“幸福”,说明这种状态带来的积极感受。C选项“And this will make you feel very happy.
