IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Ordinary people trying to make a difference in the world.
This week, we speak to John Harrison, a volunteer at the Queensland Animal Shelter
Have you ever volunteered at an animal shelter before?
No, but I have had many years’ experience with animals. I 1 with animals. At one time my family had between five and eight dogs in the house, with four cats. I have many happy memories and many not so happy memories. I try to advise people on the care of their animals. I don’t tell people what to do. I just suggest to them and give them some new ideas.
How long have you been a volunteer at the Queensland Shelter?
I’ve been a volunteer for five years now.
What are your 2 there?
Well, I’m a bank manager, so I know my way around financial matters. At the shelter, I 3 organize events to raise money.
So, you have quite an important position. What do other volunteers at the shelter do? Each year we find thousands of animals that need our help. This means a lot of work in many different areas. Some volunteers help out with the 4 of the animals. They feed and exercise them and make sure their cages are clean. Others help owners find their lost pets or sort out animal adoptions (领养).
Can you give our readers some information about adoption?
Before adoption, a vet checks the animal and vaccinates (注射疫苗) it. It 5 $200 to adopt an animal, but that also includes the vet services. Since the shelter opened in 2003, we have found homes for 3,166 dogs and 1,930 cats.
That’s very impressive!
Well, down at the shelter, we’re all 6 the work we’re doing and we hope to improve our services in the future.

Cormorant fishing is a Chinese traditional skill. Traditional skills are those 1 that have been passed down from generation to generation. These skills can include things like weaving, pottery making, or woodworking. They are often 2 rural areas (农村) and small communities where people have been able to keep these skills over time.
Traditional skills are important because they help to protect cultural heritage (遗产). By passing on these skills, we are able to keep alive the knowledge and skills that have been used for centuries. This not only enables these traditions to continue, but also makes us interested in the history and culture of different communities around the world.
Another reason why traditional skills are valuable is that they 3 a way for people to protect their environment. Many traditional skills use natural materials such as wood, clay, or wool. By working with these materials, people are able to develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and the resources that 4 to them.
Although there are many benefits of traditional skills, they are becoming less popular in today’s world. As technology advances and our lives become more fast-paced, many people 5 have the time or desire to learn these skills. Besides, some traditional skills are replaced by modern ones that are faster or easier to use.
However, there are still many people who value traditional skills and are working hard to keep them alive. Making Healthy Comparisons
Do you often compare yourself to other people? Comparisons can help to make decisions and inspire (激励) you, but they can also pull you into a comparison trap (陷阱).
Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read, it’s easy to compare yourself to someone else. Scientists say it’s a(an) 1 behavior that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more.
Becky Goddard is a child therapist (someone who helps children understand feelings). She believes that “comparisons can make us feel good and bad about ourselves.”
“Comparing up” means seeing someone doing better than you and using that to inspire yourself to 2 and try harder. However, Goddard says, “Sometimes it can make you feel bad about yourself and make you feel less 3 ”.
“Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you’re doing well, but it can also 4 you from wanting to improve.
So, what should you do if you often find yourself caught up in the comparison trap? One piece of advice from Goddard is to be with cheerleaders, or supportive friends. Spend time with people who 5 our strengths rather than compare themselves to you. Above all, remember that the most important competition is with yourself. Focus on your own 6 and how you can become better and better.

Teachers and schools are always focused(聚焦) on getting the best out of each student. They provide lessons, homework and extra help 3 all students can pass exams and get the education they need. But not all can be top students. Some students are just smarter than others, and some students just work harder than others. So, does ranking 4 matter?

The Letter That Changed a Life
A letter changed Levi Strauss’s life. In 1849 gold was discovered in California. Thousands of people rushed to California in 1 of finding gold and becoming wealthy. The people hoping to find gold were foolish and greedy. One of those who headed for California was Levi Strauss. Strauss was different. Strauss was a clever, hard-working man. He was 2 a new start in life. Up to this time, Strauss had worked for his two brothers in New York City. The brothers sold clothes and blankets and other goods. Strauss planned to set up a 3 business to his brothers’ in California.
Over the years, Strauss’s business grew. In 1872 he got a letter from one of his customers, a tailor (裁缝) in Nevada. The tailor, Jacob Davis, had an idea for making better work pants. The pockets on work pants often tore. Jacob Davis 4 metal rivets (铆钉) to the pockets. Rivets are pieces of metal used to join things together. The rivets worked well, and the miners liked them. Davis didn’t have enough money to get a patent for his invention. He also needed help making the pants. In his 5 , Davis said that if they worked together, the two of them ‘‘could make a very large amount of money’’.
Strauss could see that riveted work pants were a good idea. He agreed to help Davis. The two decided to make the pants. They decided to use denim cloth because it is a strong cloth that doesn’t tear easily and is long lasting. 6 , the riveted denims were called ‘‘dungarees’’. Dungarees is a word from the Hindi language of India that means “rough cloth”. Because they were tough and durable, dungarees were worn by thousands of farmers, miners, builders, and other workers. Later, dungarees came to be called “jeans”. “Jeans” is a better name for the pants than “dungarees”.

Xiaoman: The Special Solar Term (节气)
The traditional Chinese solar calendar divided the year into 24 solar terms. Xiaoman, or Grain Buds, the eighth solar term of the year, begins this year on May 21 and ends on June 5.
The ancient Chinese liked things to be balanced. In the 24 solar terms, we can find many pairs with similar names. For example: “Small Heat” (Xiaoshu) and “Great Heat” (Dashu), “Small Snow” (Xiaoxue) and “Great Snow” (Daxue). But Xiaoman is one 1 —there isn’t “Great Full” (Daman) matching it.
The name “Xiaoman” 2 describes the natural changes happening during this solar term. In northern China, Xiaoman describes the stage when summer crops like wheat are beginning to plump but aren’t fully ripe yet. In southern China, it refers to rising river levels. As rainfall 3 , rivers become “a little full”—this is the literal meaning of “Xiaoman”.
The heavy rainfall makes rivers full of water during this period, helping fish and shrimp grow big and fat. It is also harvest season for 4 .
During Xiaoman, people eat bitter vegetables like bitter melon to 5 the body for summer. These special foods help reduce internal heat and improve digestion.
Xiaoman also has cultural importance. It is a time for people to enjoy the beauty of nature and 6 the hard work of farmers. By understanding and celebrating Xiaoman, we can better connect with nature and the changing seasons.

Archaeology (考古学) is the study of the past—but it’s so much more than history! And it isn’t just about digging and finding things underground. Archaeology uses a huge range of evidence to help us tell stories about our ancestors (祖先) and find out about their 1 lives.
Humankind is almost 4 million years old, but written records have only been made by people for about the last 5,000 years. Archaeology helps to fill in the huge gaps in human history 2 writing, and it can add more details to historical records even after writing was invented.
Archaeology is about questions. Where did people live? What did they wear? What did they eat? How did they die? What were their beliefs? What tools did they use?
The evidence that archaeologists use to answer these questions is often found through digging. That evidence can include objects like pottery, jewellery, building materials, coins, weapons and tools. Soil samples (泥土样本) from archaeological sites can reveal (揭示) information about past 3 , like what kinds of plants were growing. Features like holes and the remains of walls can help archaeologists piece together what buildings looked like and what they were made of. The ways that people were buried tell us about past beliefs, and the skeletons (骸骨) themselves 4 information about people’s health in the past and the types of diseases and injuries that killed them. Teeth can even show where people came from!
Archaeology is also about answering questions. But it is important to remember that the answers are not always obvious, and 5 , there can be several different opinions about the same evidence. Archaeologists are a bit like 6 . They use the evidence to try to work out the most likely answers and then try to explain why they think their answers are right!

A Wonderful World of P’s and J’s
Are you more of a “P” person or a “J” person? You might be wondering what I’m talking about. These two labels have their roots in the popular Myers & Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test. The test produces a four-letter result. The last letter is either “P” for Perceiving (感知) or “J” for Judging. It divides people into two camps 1 how they prefer to organize their outside world.
Many people around me have described me as a classic “Judging” type. I am, after all, keen on plans and schedules. For example, I even time my walk from the office to the nearest metro station and keep a record of when trains usually roll in. On most days, a train arrives just as I hit the platform, and this brings me a great deal of 2 .
I appreciate those who share my preference for planning, but I’ve also met many “Perceiving” types. Years ago, I went to climb Mount Hua in Shanxi with some friends. As a “Judging” person, I planned carefully beforehand. I thought about what to do if it rained. What if there were no snacks available and what if my phone and camera ran out quickly? I 3 packing my backpack with ten bottles of water, plenty of mini-bread, five raincoats and as many as three power banks. On the day of the hike, two of my friends set out, to my surprise, 4 . Halfway through the journey, they got thirsty and hungry and had to rely on me for food and water. “Thanks, mate, you’re a lifesaver,” one of them said between bites of my mini-bread.
Working and traveling with people of different personality types can be challenging at times. But leaving complaints aside, I have to admit that those with a “P” on their MBTI test are not without advantages. They are often more creative and resourceful (善于随机应变的). While I would often 5 when things don’t go according to plan, these people are usually cool as cucumbers. And just imagine a world where everyone fell neatly into either the “Judging” or “Perceiving” camp. 6 truly is the spice (趣味) of life. The mix of different personalities certainly adds to it.

Sports are the base of my life.
I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches, but they usually focus on drills (演练) to improve my skills and reach the next level of play.
When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. Soon something strange happened. Our school needed a new basketball team. I thought I was 1 to be chosen for the school team because I had been in it the year before. So I just show up the tryouts and put about 90% effort into the match because I thought I’d make it with no problem. Actually, it turned out to be a big 2 . I wasn’t chosen for the team at first.
For the following months, I spent a lot of time practising and finally passed the test. During the practice, Brian Pawloski is the strictest coach I have ever met. He didn’t expect 100% effort, while he expected 200% effort. I still remember once we 3 40 lay ups (投篮) in a game, then he made us do 40 suicide drills (自杀式训练) instead. Some thought this was crazy, but it was useful for me. After this practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “Coach, that was the 4 practice I ever had.” I was completely serious and Brian Pawloski smiled. Unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how we did off the court. He always made sure I 5 my studies and was able to be trusted. We were lucky to have such a great person to teach and coach us. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He always tried his best to let us know 6 we were good at and how to put all the energy in a match. He expected us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. When I was not working on basketball, I was studying or reading some useful books instead.
I will never forget my coach as well as my high school basketball days in my life.

Xiaoman: The Special Solar Term (节气)

When I was not working on basketball, I was studying or reading some useful books instead.
