The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members. Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 old Americans concluded that gender (性别) is one of the most important things that decide whether or not people will actively care for their elderly parents. 9 In a paper presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men likely provide less care. Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been recording those people over 50s for the last decade, she analyzed the data and found that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours. “Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.” 10 “This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsibilities to their sisters.”In the UK, the census showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade. But many are doing so at the risk of their health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a fulltime job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts who are not carers. 11 4.According to the passage, what's the key factor to decide if people will actively care for the old? She's now 96 years old, so every time I visit her, the two of us are very aware that it might be the last time we see each other. Last time, I visited her, I did some short video interviews about her life. I asked her about her greatest memories and life learnings so far, her favourite books, foods and stories. I learned a lot of amazing new things about her I had never known before. These were very close conversations, and a very special time for both of us. 16 This year, I did not really have questions, only a great desire to make her know how much I loved her. I cooked for her and read her stories. Before leaving, I was looking for a way to leave something meaningful behind besides the memory of our time together. Therefore, I wrote five different love and appreciation notes to her to let her know how much she means to me, and hid them in different places where I knew she would finally find them. One under her pillow. Another one hanging from the lamp cover by which she reads in the evening. Another one by her toothbrush. One in her mailbox which she eagerly checks every day. And the last one was on her car's steering wheel. 17 I left really joyously knowing that these cards would surely cheer her up after I left. She called me as I was departing__for Paris to catch my plane back to the US and said, “I found your cards! By the time I discovered the third, I was laughing out loud! They did me so much good. Thank you so much, my sweetheart!” I smiled to myself, knowing she still had two more to go! 18 8.Why did the author cherish the chance to see his grandma? However, do you really know what each letter of the word “family” stands for? Obviously, F stands for Father; A is And; M means Mother; I, L and Y are short for “I Love You”! Now, it's quite easy for you to know how to deal with the tensions between you and your parents. __1__ However, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. 23 Here are some ways to love your parents. __2__ A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world. Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them, preparing yourself for when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. __3__ 24 Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through a hard time when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings who will make mistakes as well. __4__ Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents? Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or going somewhere with them. __5__ Listen to their old stories, which might help you find they are your tutors in this way or another. 25 A.Forgiveness is the key. B.Tell them you love them every morning. C.Parents will in turn express their love to you. D.After this, share your feelings with your parents. E.Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can. F.Please remember parents are as important as friends. G.You may think that your parents are meanspirited at times. 2.答案:B 解析:根据下文“A gentle ‘good morning’ and ‘I love you’ will warm a coldest heart.” 27 3.答案:D 解析:根据上文“It's OK to get angry ... or talk to a friend.” 4.答案:A 解析:根据下文“Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?” 故选A。 28 5.答案:E 解析:根据本段首句“Keep company with them.” When our first grandchild, Noah, was born, we didn't know what to expect.
