It's a tradition that started with a historic event. For over 400 years, on 5 November, people in Britain have had bonfires and fireworks to remember a historic event. The history In 1605, some English Catholics were angry because King James Ⅰ was treating them badly. James Ⅰ was a Protestant, and many Catholics wanted a Catholic country. In November of that year, a group of Catholic men made a plan to blow up the government buildings in London, the Houses of Parliament. An enormous explosion was planned for 5 November, when the king was going to open Parliament. The men put 36 barrels of gunpowder below the Houses of Parliament and waited for the king to arrive. The group decided that one of them, named Guy Fawkes, should light the gunpowder and cause the explosion. Their plan didn't succeed. The police found the gunpowder before it exploded and they caught all the men involved in the plot. The men were tortured and killed. To celebrate his survival, King James ordered the people of England to have a bonfire on the night of 5 November. Bonfires, guys and fireworks These days, Bonfire Night is a fun tradition with a festive atmosphere, and people don't connect it to religion or politics. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires, with models of Guy Fawkes, which are burned on the fire. The guy is made of old clothes, and the clothes are filled with newspaper. The fireworks are a reminder of the gunpowder that Guy Fawkes hid in the Houses of Parliament. Some people have a small bonfire in their garden, while in main towns and cities there are big bonfires and firework displays. Food It's normally quite cold in November in Britain, so on Bonfire Night people wear hats, scarves and gloves to spend the evening outside. Traditional Bonfire Night food includes hot dogs, burgers and hot baked potatoes. The potatoes are cooked on the bonfire and filled with butter and cheese. There are also toffee apples, which are apples on a stick, covered in sweet toffee, and in the north of England there is a special type of cake called parkin. Toasting marshmallows on the bonfire is also popular. Firework safety Fireworks in the night sky are beautiful to watch. But fireworks are dangerous and they can hurt people and damage things, so you should always be careful around them. Never light fireworks inside or near other people or buildings, and never hold lit fireworks in your hands. Also, keep your pets inside because they can be scared by the loud bangs. I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I'm watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn't like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed. When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go doortodoor on Chinese New Year's Eve to check out what every family was making. I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, readymade dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then. I don't think it's right to criticize (批评) one's choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem. It's not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it's delicious, and it's connected to their certain culture. I think it's a wonderful tradition. 24.Why can the British friend not understand when he found Chinese love eating sunflower seeds? A.Because the seeds are too hard to crack. B.Because he thinks they are harmful to teeth. C.Because he doesn't think the seeds are worth eating. D.Because he doesn't think the seeds are good. 根据第二段中的“My friend doesn't like sunflower seeds ... get one small seed.” C。 25.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year? A.The families get together for it. B.Children can eat delicious food on that day. C.The traditions of celebrating it disappear. D.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it. 根据第四段中的“Out in the living room ... sunflower seeds back then.” D。 26.What's the writer's attitude to Denmark's way of eating bread? A.Uncaring. B.Negative. C.Understandable. D.Doubtful. 根据最后一段中的“I think it's a wonderful tradition.” C。 27.What idea does the writer want to express in this passage? A.Eating habits come from a certain culture. B.It is good to form healthy eating habits. C.Changing your eating habits will change your life. D.One kind of food doesn't necessarily suit everyone. 根据最后一段中的“They think it's delicious, and it's connected to their certain culture.” A。 C The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole. The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles. When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't have much difference from the European culture. At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形文字的) language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what's more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicated until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference (干预) from the other. The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people's ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural difference should not be the obstacle to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther. 28.What does the underlined word “civilization” refer to in Paragraph 3? A.A particular ability or type of ability. B.A society with its culture and its way of life. C.The process of teaching, training and learning. D.The art of planning, designing, and constructing buildings. B。 29.Why did the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries? A.People ate different kinds of food. B.There were two language systems. C.The East and the West are too far away. D.People's habits and traditions are not similar. 根据倒数第二段中的“But what's more, due to ... communicated until recent centuries.” C。 30.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A.Benefits of cultural differences. B.Disadvantages of cultural differences. C.Driving force of people's going farther. D.Waves to make the world more colorful. 根据最后一段中的“But different cultures make ... driving force of our going farther.(但是不同的文化使21世纪的世界更加丰富多彩。文化差异不应该成为人类文明的障碍。它应该成为我们前进的动力。)”可知,最后一段主要讲文化差异的好处。故选A。 31.What can be the best title for the text? A.What causes different life between East and West B.What causes diet differences between East and West C.What causes different views between East and West D.What causes cultural differences between East and West 答案:D 解析:标题判断题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“The cultures of the East and ... on the whole.(东西方的文化的确有很大不同。这是因为文化系统在整体上是两个独立的系统。)”可知,本文主要介绍了东西方文化不同的原因,D项(是什么导致了东西方的文化差异)最适合作为文章标题。故选D。 D This year I did something I'd never done—shopping at midnight on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. After all, you can get great deals online from the comfort of your bed over a hot cup of coffee. So why would I stand traffic, cold weather and crowds for a few bargains? For my teenagers, spending time with Mom is usually down on their list next to homework and picking up the dog waste. So, when they asked me to take them shopping at the mall at midnight on Black Friday, my first reaction was definitely no! But my son, who usually runs the other way if I mention shopping, wanted me to take him shopping. I felt needed, though I knew it was my wallet and a ride, not quality time with Mom that they wanted. Then the hourlong car ride. We followed songs on the radio and talked about the deals we hoped to get. I had opportunities to give them lessons on what not to do when driving, but I had to keep the peace. And we all connected as we sat with crazed smiles at midnight. The kids scanned for a spot once we finally reached the busy parking lot. There was something about standing in a line that snakes around the building in the freezing cold that brings people together. Once inside, we had to work as a team, hoping to come together with just the right size and color. As I dug through mountains of clothing for a particular shirt for my husband and gave up, my daughter came toward me, shirt in hand and victory on her face. “I got the last one!” So we ended up at 3 am with some bargains. Nothing we couldn't have found online or in stores at a reasonable hour. But for me, I got quality time with my kids. A thirdgrade class knows exactly what will brighten an older neighbor's holiday meal—and it isn't a roast turkey. In October, I told the eightyearolds I taught in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my Thanksgiving plan. “I'd like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we'll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.” I wanted the children to experience that it's more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that love of society and love of life is not just lip service; that people somehow have to make it come alive. Early in the Thanksgiving week, the boys and the girls arrived in class with their hardearned pocket money and couldn't wait to go shopping. After pacing up and down in the supermarket, we put a turkey and decorations in the shopping cart (购物车). At last we headed toward the checkout, and then someone found a “necessity”—flowers. It was more reasonable to use any extra money to buy food. I pronounced, “You can't eat flowers.” “But Mrs Sherlock,” the group replied, “we want flowers.” I was defeated, and the children put a bunch of pink roses into the cart. An organization had given us the name and address of Maria, a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. Soon we were driving along a rough road to her house. We finally pulled up in front of a small house in the woods. A thin woman with a tired face came to the door to welcome us. My little group hurried to get the food. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept saying “Thanks”—much to the visitors' pleasure. When kids put the pink roses on the table, the woman seemed surprised. “She was wishing it was a bag of flour (面粉),” I thought. Having talked for a while, we returned to the car. As we fastened (系上) our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. Upon seeing the moving scene, the children became quiet. [精彩范文] As we fastened (系上) our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. Maria waved goodbye to us, then turned around and walked across the room, past the roast turkey, past the decorations, straight to the flowers. She put her face in the flowers. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her face, which brightened up the whole room all of a sudden. The old lady was transformed before our eyes. She seemed to become energetic and young again, and a tired face disappeared completely. Upon seeing the moving scene, the children became quiet. At that very brief moment, the children saw the power to make others' life better by giving. They sensed that sometimes a person needs a bunch of pretty flowers on a dark November day. And they did make the right choice for what could cheer up an old lonely lady's Thanksgiving holiday—just something simple but surprising as well as beautiful. We indeed made the idea come alive.
