At the age of 16, Lasse Stolley from Germany went out for a change after graduation from junior high school. Little did he know that this change would take him farther than 500,000 kilometers—all on trains.
Inspired by a movie he had watched online, Stolley bought a BahnCard 100, a ticket that allows unlimited travel on all Deutsche Bahn trains in Germany for a year. But Stolley didn't just travel on those trains. He made his home on trains, living there fulltime. During the day, he took trips and at night, he slept across the seats on highspeed trains.
“I can decide every day where I want to go, whether to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea,” Stolley said.
Each morning, Stolley would check the train connections for the day, and decide what journeys he would take based on the weather and his mood. He might stop off at a swimming pool for a shower, or enjoy the views with a hike between train rides.
While he didn't pay rent, Stolley said that he spent around $10,000 a year on living expenses, including his $6,400 train pass and entry costs to things like swimming pools. But since Stolley was a “Platinum” Deutsche Bahn customer, he could eat from Deutsche Bahn for free.
To cover his extra cost, he made a__buck on the move by working as a programmer using his laptop (手提电脑). In 2023 alone, Stolley spent over 3,700 hours on trains. He also took trains across Europe with an Interrail Pass, and travelled as far as Ankara in Turkey. All of his adventures were recorded on his online blog, named “Life on the Train”.

Travelling plays an important part in making us feel relaxed and happy. It also brings good changes in our life and keeps us alive and active. Travelling gives us practical experience of things we have studied in books. So a person who does not travel at all does not find any meaning in the name of Ganga River. However, if he has travelled to this place, he can truly relate everything he has studied and will always remember each and every detail of that place.
Nowadays, many people like travelling as they want to explore the world and see everything they have read about. And this seems to be quite true as practical knowledge is more important and effective (有效的). People like to visit historical places in different parts of the world and collect information to write books and stories.
Travelling has become easier due to advancement in technology and transportation (交通). Earlier people used to travel by road or sea and it took many days to travel from one place to another. However, now the situation has changed and people travel to far off places within hours and minutes—thanks to well-built roads and airplanes.
People travel for different purposes. Some travel for further education while others travel to relax and enjoy. Many people take a break from their busy schedule and go for a vacation, which makes them feel pleased and energetic (充满活力的).
Many writers and painters travel to different places to experience some of the best things in nature and express them in the form of paintings or books. People also travel for business purposes so as to make money from their business. Students travel for educational purposes. Everyone has a unique reason to travel. Therefore, travelling is an important part of human life and it provides knowledge and offers all kinds of benefits to mankind.

You may have heard of Niagara Falls, one of the biggest waterfalls in the world. But do you know about the Niagara Escarpment? __1__.
Earlier this month, our school went on a hiking trip to this beautiful place. The weather was cold, cloudy and windy, so we wore many layers to stay warm. We were separated into two groups and went on different routes. The whole escarpment is 725 kilometers long. __2__.
My favorite part of the routes was the cave. The cave was formed from many differently shaped rocks. __3__. We climbed down into the rocks with the help of our teachers. The rocks were steep and slippery because they were covered with wet leaves. It was a fun and exciting experience for all of us.
__4__. After walking 5 km without any rest, we were hungry and tired. When our teacher finally said we could stop to have lunch, we were thrilled. After all, this route was a little different from the ones we were used to. It was more rugged, with lots of rocks on the path, which made it harder to walk. But it was great exercise.
