In movies and books, people often describe a decisive moment when they figure out who they are. However, I never thought it actually happened in real life. I never expected to have a “moment” of my own. When it arrived, mine was much more powerful than I could have ever imagined.
During the spring of my junior year, my class watched a documentary called The Invisible Children. It was about three college students who took a trip to Africa and documented their experience. At first the film was slightly humorous. However, once the group arrived in northern Uganda, the mood changed. They learned what the consequences of a 23year war had been for thousands of children. Some had lost family and friends, others were caught by the opposing force and became child soldiers.
Before long, I was sobbing. I couldn't believe these things were happening, yet at the same time I knew they were. I just hadn't been paying attention, for in the past 17 years, I had been blessedly protected. When the movie ended, I couldn't get it out of my head. For the next week, I was not myself. Every bite of food I took made me think of Grace, the 15yearold who had little to eat. When I went to bed, I pictured Sunday, the 14yearold boy sleeping on a straw mat on the ground in a camp. My whole world shifted.
Since that day, I haven't been able to picture my future in a way that doesn't involve going to Africa and doing what I can to help. Ultimately, this is why I decided to major in engineering. With an engineering degree, my potential for change will be limitless. I will build wells and schools, and design irrigation systems. Engineering is tough, but I know—in what Yeats called “my deep heart's call”—that this is what I'm supposed to do with my life.

Teenagers always dream about becoming actors. It appears admirable to be an actor. But the fact is well beyond their expectations. A successful actor will have endless meetings to attend. Moreover, a film star will have no private space, because he has too many enthusiastic fans as well as crazy reporters to deal with. As to an unsuccessful actor, life is even tougher.
I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra money to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I took part in a lot of TV advertisements for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder.
I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put a letter in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I opened it, full of expectations. To my surprise, it was an audition for a clown for the Canadian circus. I couldn't stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film!
When I was at drama school, there was a course in clown skills. I gained top marks in this course. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I'd had in mind when I went to drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the makeup.
I had expected to prove myself in public and become the focus of the world. My dream was to be the brightest star and enjoy cheers from my fans. However, now I have the opportunity to travel around the world. I am more than an actor. Actually I am a joy postman. I have visited over 32 different countries and amused millions of people.
