A.Listening and speaking
A1. Lucy Cross, a fashion expert, is talking about the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Listen to the presentation (讲座) and choose the best answer. Circle the letters of the correct options.
to reduce
1. What is the dirty secret behind the fashion industry?
a. Pollution. b. Water shortage. c. Loss of land.
2. What is the amount of water an average adult drinks in ten years?
a. 1,000 litres. b. 2,500 litres. c. 10,000 litres.
3. How many pieces of clothing do companies make every year?
a. About 15 billion.
b. About 100 billion.
c. About 350 billion.
4. In which country do women wear a piece of clothing an average of seven times before getting rid of it?
a. In the UK. b. In the US. c. In Japan.
5. How much textile waste is reused or recycled in the US every year?
a. 2.25 million tons.
b. 9.75 million tons.
c. 15 million tons.
Tapescript
Lucy Cross: Behind the bright colours and eye-catching prints of new clothes lies a dirty secret. The fashion industry is one of the world’s most polluting industries. From polluted soil and rivers to tons of textile waste, fashion comes at a high cost to the environment.
cost(为做某事涉及的)努力,代价,损失
come at a high cost to使...
Added to this, the process of making new clothes consumes large amounts of natural resources.
The raw materials that make up fabric, such as cotton, require a huge amount of space to grow. Land which is used to grow cotton for clothing can’t be used to grow food. Moreover, farmers usually use vast amounts of water to grow the fibre crops. To grow enough cotton
for one pair of jeans requires about 10 square metres of land and more than 10,000 litres of water.
make sth up形成;构成 fab·ric /ˈfæbrɪk/ 织物;布料
That’s the amount of water an average adult drinks in ten years. Farmers also use a lot of pesticides to make
cotton grow better. When these poisonous chemicals escape into the environment, they pollute land and waterways and harm the health of people who live nearby.
Every year, companies make about 100 billion new pieces of clothing,a number that continues to grow. We are buying more and more clothes but wearing them fewer times.
escape(气体、液体等 )漏出;泄漏;渗出
One survey found that women in the UK wear a piece of clothing an average of seven times before getting rid of it. In the US, the amount of textile waste reaches about
15 million tons per year. Only 15 per cent of this waste is reused or recycled. Around 65 per cent ends up in landfills.
To conclude, the fashion industry causes serious harm to the environment, and we all need to do whatever we can to reduce its negative impact.
A2.A host is interviewing Lucy Cross about how people can reduce their fashion footprint. Listen to the interview and complete the notes below.
Tips on eco-conscious fashion
Buy less and choose well
• We (1) ___________________ resources consumed and generate less clothing waste by buying less.
• We should think twice before buying a new clothing item[

natural materials
Visit clothing libraries
Exchange clothes with
in a new way
Host: The clothes we buy have an enormous impact on the environment, and now it’s more important than ever to be careful about what we buy. With me in the studio is Lucy Cross, who’s written a book about eco-conscious fashion.Lucy, you mention several ways to make a difference in your book.
Lucy:Yes. First, we should buy less and choose well. By buying less, we reduce the number of resources we consume as well as the massive amount of clothing
waste we generate.
Also, we should think twice and ask ourselves if we really
need a new clothing item. And we need to look at the label before we buy something: it’s best to buy clothes made of recycled materials, which save natural resources and reduce waste, or those made of natural materials like
silk.
Host:These ideas are really inspiring. In your book, you also give a lot of advice on where to find great second
-hand clothing. I was really surprised by your next tip: “Don’t buy it—borrow it.” How does this work in practice?
Lucy:There are two ways of doing it. One way is to visit clothing libraries, where we can borrow outfits instead of books. We can also exchange clothes with friends. Either way, we can get access to great clothes without the need to buy something new.
Host: Finally, you mention that we can upcycle our favourite items.
Lucy: Yes. “Upcycling” means making something new and exciting from old items, for instance, by making a scarf from an old dress. Upcycling lets us keep an item we treasure, and at the same time we get to use it in a new way.
A3.In pairs, role-play a conversation in which you try to persuade a fashion-crazy friend to reduce his/her fashion footprint. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the expressions in bold. Switch roles after you finish. Page 65
-crazy…
A: Do you want to go shopping with me on Saturday? There’s a big sale in that shop you like.
B: I don’t know ... I watched a documentary about the fashion industry’s negative impact on the environment last night. Do you have any idea how much new clothes
cost the environment? It takes about 10 square metres of land and more than 10,000 litres of water to grow enough cotton for a pair of jeans!
A: Wow, that’s a lot! I think I should cut down on shopping, but I just love keeping up to date with the latest fashion trends.
B: But you don’t have to buy something new to look good. All I’m saying is that we need to think twice before we buy a new clothing item. People buy a lot of things they don’t really need.
cut sth down (to...)/cut down (on sth)削减,缩小(尺寸、数量或数目)
A: I’m definitely guilty about that myself! In my wardrobe, there are a lot of clothes that I almost never wear. I guess I’m just bored with them.
B: In that case, you should try upcycling them. Turn them into something new and exciting like making a scarf from an old dress. And if there are things you still don’t want, you should give them away to charity shops. It’s such a waste to throw away clothes that aren’t damaged.
A: That’s true! We should also make a point of buying environmentally sustainable clothing. For instance, there’s a shoe brand that makes shoes from recycled plastic.
B: Recycled plastic? I think I know which brand you’re talking about—I’ll be sure to check it out!
make a point of doing sth(因重要或必要)保证做,必定做
B.Reading and writing
B1.School is a great place to learn not only from books but also by practical experience.Read the magazine article below and complete it with the correct sentences in the box. There are two sentences you do NOT need to use. Write the letters in the blanks.

b. High school students from around the world spend a term learning without classroom walls.
c. No food is wasted at the Island School.
d. When farmers don’t have enough buyers, harvested crops can go to waste.
e. The school also helps local farms grow more food, which reduces the need for imports.
f. The plants filter the water, which is then returned to the tanks.(人工)水池,湖,水库
g. They leave as confident teen leaders, sowing seeds to live an eco-aware life at home.
Farm to dining hall table
No Internet, no cell phones, no grades. At the Island School on the small Bahamian island of Eleuthera, environmental sustainability is a way of life.(1) _________

b. High school students from around the world spend a term learning without classroom walls.
Going green starts with breakfast. Students, teachers and visiting researchers share meals in the open-air dining hall. At the Island School, food travels just steps from the gardens to the plates. The breakfast eggs come straight from the henhouse, the daily salad bar overflows with just-picked leafy green vegetables, and every bite into a ripe, juicy mango is a reason to smile. a.Pork chops and pulled pork sandwiches are served in the days following the pig harvest.
Learning is all about hands-on experience. Working the land and eating fresh food, students learn to live a healthy, eco-friendly life. All the fruits, vegetables, fish and pork that are produced on campus stay on campus. The leftovers from the kitchen are recycled: they are used to feed the pigs or as fertilizer in the gardens.
to work the land耕种土地
You do not need soil to grow vegetables or herbs. The school uses aquaponics,a food production system for farming fish and growing leafy greens and herbs.Dirty water from the fish tanks is pumped into the plant “grow beds”, providing plants with nutrients. (3) ______________

e. The school also helps local farms grow more food, which reduces the need for imports.
Furthermore, it provides students with an opportunity to
learn about the island’s agriculture. They help the farmers in the fields with seeding, weeding and harvesting.
At the end of the term, students pack their bags.
(5)_______________________________________________
____________________________ “Aquaponics is one of the easiest research projects to bring home. I ended up really getting into it and I’m now involved with an aquaponics farm,” says a student.
get into sth.
involved (in/with sth/sb)耗费很多时间;关注
g. They leave as confident teen leaders, sowing seeds to live an eco-aware life at home.
Students at the Island School are helping change the planet by living what they have learnt and reducing their food miles, one meal at a time.
B2.Suppose you are a student at the Island School. Write a letter to your friend and tell him/her what you have learnt at this school and what else you want to do to be
environmentally sustainable.
Dear Kate,
How are things back home? How was your football training camp?
I’m sorry I haven’t written to you earlier—my schedule has been packed with different activities! I’ve been studying at the Island School for two weeks now. Life here is really exciting and the days pass by very quickly, but it’s a lot of hard work.
training camp训练营
packed with sth/ -packed有大量…的;…极多的
We get up at 6:15 every morning to make the most of daylight hours, and at the end of the day, I’m so tired that I fall asleep as soon as I close my eyes.
Many of the classes at the school focus on practical knowledge. I have to admit that I didn’t know a lot about plants before I came here, so this exchange programme has already been a real eye-opener for me.
I’ve been learning so much about growing crops and looking after animals, and when I get back home, I’ll definitely try out some of the new skills I’ve acquired. For example, I want to start growing some simple vegetables like spring onions(大葱) on my balcony.
I also have classes about ecology where I learn how to protect the environment and live sustainably. This week, I’ve been studying aquaponics. It is a method of growing
vegetables or herbs in water instead of soil, while at the same time using the water to farm fish.
Aquaponics can save water—studies show that it uses much less water than traditional farming. It also reduces the need for fertilizer, since the waste produced by the fish provides nutrition for the plants. In other words, aquaponics is an incredibly economical way of producing food, and helps minimize the carbon footprint of our
food. I believe that aquaponics will be really useful in the fight against climate change.
Alright, I have to stop writing now because I really need to sleep. Do write back soon!
Lots of love,
Amanda
