Are you an “I person” or an “E person”? These two personality labels (个性标签) are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. “I” stands for “introverted (内向的)” and “E” refers to “extroverted”.
Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I” person can still act outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E person”. According to experts, this is called “masking”. That is hiding your true personality in some situations. Because human beings want to get the sense of belonging by pleasing others.
Using the MBTI result to identify (识别) and describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’”. “Why?” she asked back. “Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do?” It was then I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is—for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don’t define (定义) who you are.
1.What is MBTI?
2.How many personality label results were mentioned in total?
3.How does the writer identify and describe someone’s personality?
4.Why does the writer mention the conversation with his sister?
5.What do you think of the MBTI personality result? (自拟一句话)
【答案】1.It is a popular personality test. 2.Sixteen/16. 3.By using the MBTI result. 4.Because he wants to tell us that he took the result too seriously. 5.It’s just for fun and doesn’t define who you are.

Growing up is not always easy. When we face difficulties, a spirit of depending on yourself is more useful than crying for help. That’s what Hong Zhanhui’s story of growing from boy to man with family suffering tells us.
Hong was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xihua County, Henan Province. When he was only 11, his father became badly ill and one day he came back with an abandoned baby girl. A year later Hong’s mother left home. She no longer wanted to live such a poor life and face her sick husband. So everything hard fell onto the young boy’s shoulders: to take care of his father and the sister Chenchen, and to go on to study.
Although his life was hard, Hong didn’t go away from his father and sister. He worked in part-time jobs to feed his family. He climbed tall trees to get bird’s eggs for his sister. He walked two hours at weekends to the market to buy different things to sell around his school. A few years later, he studied at a college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to hire a room near his college for her and sent her to school.
After Hong’s story went public, he became a hero in people’s eyes. But Hong refused offers from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work.
Hong’s story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship can knock a person down but himself.
So when facing difficulties, don’t complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society and you’ll find the world smiling back.

These years, many college students choose to join the army (军队) after graduation. Zhao Huan is one of them.
When Zhao Huan was 26 years old, he joined the army and became one of the soldiers (战士) on the top of Changbai Mountain in Jilin Province. The three-year life in the army made him really strong-willed (意志坚强的).
The weather on the mountain is terrible in winter. The snow can reach as deep as 2 metres. The lowest temperature can be -40℃. There are over 200 days a year when the wind speed is nearly 12 metres per second. “It is very difficult to fall asleep with the wind outside crying like a wolf,” Zhao said. To save water, they only took a bath once a month.
Even so, Zhao and his team did not give up. Whatever difficulties they met, they tried their best to finish their tasks. Especially when they were on duty outside in winter, snow hit their faces and they were frozen because of the low temperature. But they put their duty before anything and stood like a statue without a slight move.

“We see colours everywhere; we use them a lot and sometimes our life may be changed because of them,” said Verity Allen. In a new programme “Colour Me Healthy”, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make. They can change our feelings and even influence how healthy we are.
“Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things?” says Verity. “Our toothpaste (牙膏) is always white or blue. It’s seldom grey. Why not? For some reason we think that blue and white are clean, while we usually think of grey products (产品) as being a bit dirty and unpleasant. It’s the same for business. We respect a company which writes its name in blue or black more than other colours. People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy.”
There are also some other interesting facts about colours in our life. We use red, yellow and green as the traffic lights because they are most easily seen. The environmental protection colour is usually “green” because it lets us think of the green trees, grasses and mountains.
1.What colour is our toothpaste?
2.Why are traffic lights red, yellow and green?
3.What do we usually think of grey products?

Chinese people like the red colour a lot. Even now, Chinese people like to refer to ourselves as Chizi, meaning the red descendant (子孙).
Red represents the motherland and authority. Official uniforms of the Tang Dynasty were red. In the Qing Dynasty, red was used on official caps to show different rankings. As we know, the Five-starred Red Flag was first raised on October 1st, 1949. Even nowadays, headlines of official documents (文件) are painted red. This is why they are called red-head documents.
For ordinary people, red stands for happiness. For example, the word “double happiness” used for weddings is red. The bride (新娘) wears red clothes which are different from the white gowns of the west. During the Chinese Spring Festival, people will give red packets with money inside to the children as good wishes. Couplets (对联) hanging on both sides of the doors are written in red. The word red equals prettiness. The expression “hongyan” meaning red colour is a synonym (同义词) of a beautiful girl. Red is also one of the most popular words used in the names of Chinese women. But in traffic lights red means stop driving. This is how the westerners like to use the red colour. It is because red is very bright, and is good for warning purposes. In China, people think different colors have different meanings. Here are three colors and their meanings in Chinese culture.
Red
Red is considered as one of the luckiest colors in Chinese culture. In ancient China, the royal (皇室的) family wore bright red. In modern China, red is often seen at celebrations like weddings and festivals. Red also describes someone who is very popular, like a star. You will say “He is red.”
Yellow
In ancient China, yellow represented power. Only the emperor (皇帝) could wear this color. Yellow was also a natural color. The Yellow River, the second longest river in China, got its name from the yellowish soil in it. Now, when yellow is used in a sentence, it means someone fails and that something doesn’t go as planned. For example, when you ask people how their relationship is going, they might say “huáng le”. It means they’ve broken up.
White
In ancient China, white was considered as common people’s color. Back then, only the rich could afford to make colorful clothes. Common people couldn’t afford that, so most of their clothes were white. Now people still enjoy white clothes, but they sometimes connect white with bad things. It is connected with scary things like death.

3.What colour do you like best? Why?

What is it like to grow up?
As you grow older, there will be certain events that will mark your growth. Graduating from high school and getting your first job are just a few of these. What are some other ways in which we mark our journey toward adulthood?
In the US, getting your driver’s license (执照) at the age of 16 is seen as a major coming-of-age (成人) ritual (仪式). You may have seen kids celebrating their first car in movies and TV shows. It is the first true taste of independence for most teenagers. But not every teenager gets a car right away. Usually, their parents will buy a second-hand car for them as their first car.
Another big coming-of-age event is the prom (毕业舞会). Held at the end of the year the prom is a graduation celebration for senior high school students. Teenagers wear fancy clothing, ask each other to dance and vote (投票) for a prom “king” and “queen”. For many teenagers, prom is the biggest social event of the year. It’s a time for them to dress and act like an adult.
And there’s still more. At the age of 18, we can vote in the US and at 21, we can drink alcohol (酒). This is also the time when most children move out of their parents’ home for college or work.
It is around this age that society starts to consider us to be adults. But what does it really mean to be an adult?
Psychologist Jeffrey Arnett surveyed young adults and found three common adulthood goals: taking responsibility for yourself, making independent decisions, and being financially (经济上) independent.
I agree with Arnett. Being an adult has more to do with one’s maturity (成熟). If you want to drive, vote, drink, leave home or even start a romantic relationship, you have to make sure that you’re ready to be responsible.
1.What can be seen as a major coming-of-age ritual in the US?
2.What do parents usually buy for their kids as their first car?
3.When is the prom held?
4.At what age can one vote in the US?
5.In your opinion, what’s the true meaning of growing up?
【答案】1.Getting a driver’s license at the age of 16 can be seen as a major coming-of-age ritual in the US. 2.Parents usually buy a second-hand car for their kids as their first car. 3.The prom is held at the end of the year. 4.One can vote at the age of 18 in the US. 5.In my opinion, the true meaning of growing up is taking responsibility for yourself, making independent decisions, and being financially independent.(答案不唯一,合理即可)

Nowadays, there has always been a problem between young people and their parents. Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents, because they think their parents don’t understand them. They often say their parents are too strict with them, and their parents give them too many rules. Parents often find it difficult to get their children’s trust (信任). They seem to forget how they felt when they were young.
For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can deal with difficult things. Older people are different from them. They plan things ahead and don’t easily change their plans.
Young people often make their parents angry, but they don’t mean to cause any trouble. On one hand, the young want to keep themselves from the old people’s world. On the other hand, they want to make a new culture of their own. But if their parents don’t understand what they like, young people will feel lonely.
If you plan to do what you like, you’d better win your parents’ support and try to make them understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility (责任感), they will certainly give you the right (权利) to do what you want to do.
1.Do parents often find it difficult to get their children’s trust?

Le’ Ann Solmonson, a counselor (咨询师) in Texas, has seen many families meet problems when children reach adolescence (青春期). The teenagers begin to think more differently than their parents and they want more independence so they began to push against their parents’ rules. To deal with the problem, the parents tighten (加紧) their control of their children or even punish them, which makes their children push back harder and break more rules, leading to more problems and disagreements.
In counseling, Solmonson often asks a teenager and his or her parents to talk about one of their disagreements. Usually, the parents will directly complain (抱怨) that their kid’s opinion is wrong. If this happens, Solmonson will remind them that she wants to hear what they think their child’s opinion is, not whether it’s right or wrong. She explains that the purpose is to develop understanding between them. When problems appear, she advises parents to use supportive and positive sentences like “I know how you feel about it. How can we stop that from happening again?”
Moreover, Solmonson reminds parents that if they want respect (尊重) from their child during disagreements, they’ll need to show it themselves. If a teenager answers impolitely, Solmonson tells parents to respond by saying, “I’m going to give you another chance. Do you need a minute to think about how to say that?”

(自拟一句话)

Life was hard because of the weather. When the snow cut off the roads, the soldiers needed water most. They had to heat the snow to get water to drink, cook and wash with.
Zhao said, “Life is not easy on the top of Changbai Mountain. Thinking of the lights of thousands of homes, I think my efforts pay off. For me, all the difficulties can be overcome in the future. The experience of being a soldier here really means a lot to me.”
1.How old was Zhao Huan when he joined the army?
2.How is the weather on the mountain in winter?
3.What did the soldiers need most when the snow cut off the roads?
4.Did Zhao and his team give up when they met difficulties?
5.Why did Zhao say that the experience meant a lot to him?

4.What’s Verity’s opinion (观点) about colours?
5.What else do you know about the use of colours in daily life? (Please give an example)
But it doesn’t really have any negative meanings.
1.What does Chizi mean?
2.When was the Five-starred Red Flag first raised?
3.Why are official documents called red-head documents?
4.Where are couplets hung?
5.What do you think of the red colour?

1.Which colour best describes a popular person?
2.What does yellow mean when it is used in a sentence?

2.How do young people show that they have grown up?
3.Why do young people make their parents angry?
4.Are you happy when you are with your parents? Why or why not?

1.What is Le’ Ann Solmonson?
2.Why do children begin to push against their parents’ rules when they reach adolescence?
3.Should parents use supportive sentences when problems appear?
4.How can parents get respect from their child during disagreements?
