It’s not hard to see how welcoming Berlin is to families. There are kid-orientated (儿童导向的) cafes and imaginatively themed playgrounds. Parks and woodlands provide plentiful picnicking opportunities and, in hot weather, lakes offer sunbathing.
Getting around is easy, too. The city’s neighborhoods are walkable, and its public transport network efficient and cheap. Its wide, flat streets, bike lanes and family-friendly cycle hire make two wheels a great way to explore while taking in the city's impressive sights—all of which make Berlin a memorable family destination.
What to do with toddlers
A popular neighbourhood with families, Prenzlauer Berg has playgrounds, parks and pretty streets with shops selling kids’ clothes and toys, as well as family-friendly cafes. For those gifted in music, the Frank Gehry-designed concert hall at the Barenboim-Said Academy hosts morning concerts for babies under 12 months and afternoon concerts for one-to-five-year-olds. Meanwhile, central Tiergarten is a wonderful spot for walking, picnicking or kicking a ball in the grass; wander through the woods, spotting cultural sights. Of the park’s six playgrounds, the one close to Thomas-Dehler-Strasse is best equipped for toddlers.
What to do with tweens and teenagers
The Deutsches Technik museum will absorb transport and technology fans for hours. For those ready to learn about the darkest chapter of German history, the Topography of Terror museum is located on the site of the former SS and Gestapo (盖世太保) headquarters. Checkpoint Charlie is a few minutes walk away and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe can be reached in around 20 minutes on foot. To experience a little of Berlin's alternative side, Bearpit Karaoke is held on Sundays at Mauer park.
1. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a family-friendly activity in Berlin?
A. Visiting kid-oriented cafes.
B. Enjoying concerts at the Barenboim-Said Academy.
C. Shopping for kids’ toys in stores.
D. Swimming and surfing in lakes.
2. Which activity is recommended for families with toddlers in Tiergarten?
A. Visiting museums. B. Picnicking and walking.
C. Riding bikes. D. Shopping for toys.
3. For teenagers interested in German history, which place would be most suitable to visit?
A. Deutsches Technik museum B. Prenzlauer Berg
C. Topography of Terror museum D. Mauer park

When Tina Farr visits the year 2 classroom at her Oxford primary school, she can feel the changed atmosphere since play was put firmly back on the curriculum (课程). “The children come running up with things they have made. There is always a shop on the go so they will be pricing up something or finding change.” the headteacher says.
Play-based learning — letting children move around, make up games and explore within loosely guided activities — usually stops when they attend primary school. Lessons then become desk-based, focused on reading and writing.
Farr had long championed the value of play, working hard to bring it into breaktimes. “Teachers would recognise what we do and it doesn’t take any more planning than the standard approach.” With play-based learning in place for her year 1 and 2 children, Farr then looked at where else she could change any practices that weren’t working. “If a practice isn’t in line with healthy child development, why are we doing it?”
The school’s year 5 children — aged nine and 10 — were struggling to sit still in a tight space so she removed all the furniture. “The impact was immediate and impressive. Children now choose where and how to learn. A class once struggling with attention is now calm and engaged.” A teacher noted: “Their self-regulation has improved greatly. They settle down to work much more readily.”
Farr believes the outdated system needs urgent change. “We have neuroscience (神经科学) to know children learn through play.” In June the school sailed through its Ofsted inspection. “The inspector really understood our play-based learning.” Farr’s message is that her approach can be rolled out. “It’s blown my mind how engaged the children are. It’s phenomenal,” she says.
4. What change does Farr bring to her school?
A. Additional income. B. Flexible environments.
C. Upgraded equipment. D. Diverse outdoor games.
5. What is the main reason for Farr to introduce play-based learning?
A. To reduce teacher’s workload.
B. To enhance the school’s reputation.
C. To improve students’ academic results.
D. To promote kids’ well-being and growth.
6. Which best describes the students with the new seating arrangement?
A. More focused. B. More energetic.
C. More self-centred. D. More courageous.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning Farr’s approach?
A. Its theory. B. Its challenge.
C. Its purpose. D. Its effectiveness.
B 5. D 6. A 7. D

Scientists have created a full map of an adult brain for the first time. The 3D model of all of the neurons (神经元) of a fruit fly, and the 50 million connections between them, is the first time that scientists have been able to see the full brain of an adult that can walk and fly. It represents a major breakthrough compared to previous efforts, which for instance recorded the early growth stage of a fruit fly and its much smaller 3,016 neurons.
Researchers hope that the work can be a step towards producing similar studies of larger brains — including, eventually, those of humans. It might also help us gain a better understanding of how brains actually function. Already, it suggests that brains might be more similar than we might think. By comparing the newly mapped brain to previous, smaller studies, researchers saw that the pictures had significant similarities — and that brains themselves are not necessarily a unique structure. “If we want to understand how the brain works, we need a systematic understanding of how all the neurons fit together and let you think. For most brains we have no idea how these networks function,” said Gregory Jefferis, from the University of Cambridge. “Flies can do all kinds of complicated things like walk and fly, and the males sing to the females. Brain wiring diagrams are a first step towards understanding everything we’re interested in — how we control our movement, answer the telephone, or recognize a friend.”
The map was produced by taking the brain of a fly, itself less than 1 millimeter (微米) wide, and cutting it into 7,000 thin sections and then scanning them. Researchers used AI to scan those images to build up a map of the 140,000 neurons and 50 million connections.
Researchers have made the full database open and free to all researchers, in the hope of better understanding all brains. By understanding how a healthy brain works, we might be better able to see what happens when brains function differently, as in the case of mental health conditions.
8. What have researchers found by comparing studies of fruit fly brains?
A. Brains are unique and complex. B. Brains may be structurally similar.
C. Brains need to function through neurons. D. Brains have different stages of development.
9. According to Gregory Jefferis, why have researchers chosen to study fruit flies?
A. Their ability to perform complex tasks. B. Their excellent communication skills.
C. Their ability to control their movement. D. Their complicated problem-solving skills.
10. The 3D model of the fruit fly brain was created by ________.
A. scanning the brain as a whole B. drawing pictures of the neurons
C. taking images of thinly cut pieces D. recording the brain activity over time
11. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. researchers need to study more kinds of animals
B. a comprehensive database is needed for research
C. medical treatment will need better technologies
D. more studies are needed to understand the brain
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

Tourism is a leisure activity, whose prework means just the opposite. Acting as a tourist is one of the clear characteristics of being “modern” and the popular concept of tourism is that, it is organized within particular place and occurs for a period of time, which is arranged beforehand. Tourist relationships arise from a movement of people to, and their stay in, various destinations. This necessarily involves some movement, that is the journey, and a period of stay in a new place or places. The journey and the stay are by definition outside the normal places, of residence and work, and are of a short-term and temporary nature, and there is a clear intention to return home within a relatively short period of time.
Modern societies engage in such tourist practices. New socialized forms of transportation and hotel facilities have developed in order to cope with the mass character of the gazes (凝视) of tourists, as opposed to the individual character of travel. Places are chosen to be visited and be gazed upon because there is an anticipation (期望) especially through daydreaming and fantasy of intense pleasures, either on a different scale or involving different senses from those who have been there. Such anticipation is also constructed and stays through a variety of non-tourist practices, such as films, TV, literature, magazines, records and videos which construct and reinforce (强化) this daydreaming.
Tourists tend to visit features of landscape and townscape which separate them off from everyday experience. Such aspects are viewed because they are thought to be in some sense out of the ordinary. The viewing of these tourist sights often involves different forms of social patterning with a much greater sensitivity to visual elements of landscape or townscape than is normally found in everyday life. People hang around these sights in a way that they would not normally do in their home environment and the vision is objectified (物化) or captured through photographs, postcards films and so on which enable the memory to be endlessly reproduced and recaptured.
One of the earliest research papers on the subject of tourism is Boorstin’s analysis of the “pseudo-event” (1964) where he argues that contemporary Americans cannot experience “reality” directly but are happy with “pseudo-event”. Isolated from the host environment and the local people, the mass tourist travels in guided groups and finds pleasure in fake or man-made attractions, and is cheated into enjoying the pseudo-events and ignoring the real world outside. Over time, the images generated of different tourist sights lead to a closed self-perpetuating (自我延续的) system of a false belief that provides the tourist with the basis for selecting or deciding potential places to visit. Such visits are made, says Boorstin, within the“environmental bubble”of the familiar American style hotel which keeps the tourist from the strangely of the host environment.
12. What does the author want to tell us in the 1st paragraph?
A. Making a careful travel plan is necessary.
B. Planning travel involves time and thought.
C. Getting travel tips from your friends may save time.
D. Choosing unusual tourist attractions makes a trip memorable.
13. What does the underlined part in the 3rd paragraph probably mean?
A. New environmental scenes in a different place will become more attractive.
B. Traveling to an unfamiliar place is a pleasant change from everyday routine.
C. Travelling is to see landmarks and discover unknown ways of life and values.
D. Tourists should find the native people and share with them ideas and experience.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Visiting popular tourist attractions is only a waste of time.
B. When travelling, many tourists will miss their homes and friends.
C. American tourists like to visit familiar places when they travel outside.
D. The advantage of travel is to interact with a culture different from your own.
15. Which of the following can serve as the best title of the passage?
A. Tourism, a Direct Hug of Nature
B. Tourism, an Outlook on Different Life
C. Tourism, a False Belief about the World
D. Tourism, a New Relation to Familiar Sights
B 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第一段中的“Acting as a tourist is one of the clear characteristics of being “modern” and the popular concept of tourism is that, it is organized within particular place and occurs for a period of time, which is arranged beforehand. (作为游客是“现代”的一个明显特征,而普遍的旅游概念是,旅游在特定地点内组织,且在预先安排好的一段时间内进行。)”可知,作者在第一段中想要告诉我们的是旅游是“在特定地点、特定时间段内进行的提前规划活动”,涉及行程与停留安排,即“规划旅行需要时间与思考”。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Tourists tend to visit features of landscape and townscape which separate them off from everyday experience. Such aspects are viewed because they are thought to be in some sense out of the ordinary. (游客倾向于参观那些使他们与日常体验不同的自然景观和城市风貌。这些方面被观看是因为它们在某种程度上被认为是不寻常的。)”可知,游客参观的是一些与日常体验不同的景观和城市景观,因此划线部分“ The viewing of these tourist sights often involves different forms of social patterning(观赏这些旅游景点往往涉及不同形式的社会模式)”应是指旅行是为了参观标志性景观,发现与日常不同的生活方式和价值。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“One of the earliest research papers on the subject of tourism is Boorstin’s analysis of the “pseudo-event” (1964) where he argues that contemporary Americans cannot experience “reality” directly but are happy with “pseudo-event”. Isolated from the host environment and the local people, the mass tourist travels in guided groups and finds pleasure in fake or man-made attractions, and is cheated into enjoying the pseudo-events and ignoring the real world outside.
Three Ways For Children to Learn From The Land This Earth Month
Even if you live in a big city, you can still experience nature firsthand. ____16____ It’s all that we experience with our senses when we go outside. Here are three ways to introduce the concept of climate change to kids while encouraging a connection with the environment.
Keep a climate journal.
____17____ However, you can explain that climate is simply the pattern of weather in a certain place over time. Have them keep a weather journal of the local weather day to day to get a sense of the climate in their area. For the older kids, discuss different weather measurement tools that are used by meteorologists (气象学家), such as barometers and hygrometers.
____18____
Kids can help take care of plants, like vegetables in a garden or flowering plants in pots. Growing and nurturing plants helps children understand that living things have needs and that people have a role to play in helping living things meet those needs. Make connections between climate change and the needs of plants; for example, how hotter temperatures may mean that a plant needs more water.
Build an outdoor play tool kit.
Put together an outdoor tool kit with a magnifying glass (放大镜), a pair of binoculars, a shovel, and a clear container with a lid or a bucket. These items can help kids find and collect natural specimens (标本) to examine. If they need ideas for how to bring nature into their outdoor games, try starting with something they are already interested in. ____19____
It doesn’t take much to strengthen a lifelong relationship between children and the natural world, but it helps to start early and be consistent. ____20____ With a little guidance from parents and educators, children who care about the environment will grow into adults who care about the environment.
A. Get in the dirt.
B. Develop interest in plants.
C. Nature isn’t just wilderness.
D. Climate change is a tough subject for younger kids.
E. Their desire to protect the planet will naturally grow.
F. Connecting with nature requires no special destination.
G. This could mean building a mini amusement park using natural materials.
C 17. D 18. A 19. G 20. E
根据上文“Even if you live in a big city, you can still experience nature firsthand.(即使你住在大城市,你仍然可以亲身体验大自然)”以及后文“It’s all that we experience with our senses when we go outside.(这是我们外出时用感官体验到的一切)”可知,前文提到在城市中也可以亲身感受自然,后一句提到只要走出家门就可以感知自然。
根据后文“However, you can explain that climate is simply the pattern of weather in a certain place over time. Have them keep a weather journal of the local weather day to day to get a sense of the climate in their area. For the older kids, discuss different weather measurement tools that are used by meteorologists (气象学家), such as barometers and hygrometers.(然而,你可以解释说,气候只是某一地区一段时间内的天气模式。让他们每天记录当地天气的天气日志,以了解他们所在地区的气候。对于年龄较大的孩子,讨论气象学家使用的不同天气测量工具,如气压计和湿度计)”可知,下句“however”表明填空句与之构成转折关系。刚好D项中的 tough和下句的“simply”构成转折。同时本段后面提到了“older kids”与D项中的“younger kids"呼应。故D选项“气候变化对小孩子来说是一个很难的话题”符合语境,故选D。
【18题详解】
根据本段内容“Kids can help take care of plants, like vegetables in a garden or flowering plants in pots. Growing and nurturing plants helps children understand that living things have needs and that people have a role to play in helping living things meet those needs. Make connections between climate change and the needs of plants; for example, how hotter temperatures may mean that a plant needs more water.(孩子们可以帮忙照顾植物,比如花园里的蔬菜或花盆里的开花植物。种植和培育植物可以帮助孩子们理解生物有需求,人们在帮助生物满足这些需求方面扮演着重要的角色。在气候变化和植物需求之间建立联系;例如,温度越高意味着植物需要更多的水)”可知,本段提到通过孩子亲自去种植植物而加强他们对于这片土地的认识。A选项dirt指泥土。就是让孩子们进入泥土中,亲自种植的意思。故A选项“进入泥土”符合语境,故选A。
【19题详解】
根据上文“If they need ideas for how to bring nature into their outdoor games, try starting with something they are already interested in.(如果他们需要关于如何将自然带入户外游戏的想法,试着从他们已经感兴趣的东西开始)”可知,上句提到把“nature”带进孩子们的户外活动, G选项中用自然界找到的东西来搭建孩子们的迷你游乐园。
根据上文“It doesn’t take much to strengthen a lifelong relationship between children and the natural world, but it helps to start early and be consistent.(加强儿童与自然世界之间的终身关系并不需要太多的努力,但它有助于及早开始并保持一致)”可知,上句提到尽早培养孩子们和自然的关系,并且要连贯。下句“With a little guidance from parents and educators, children who care about the environment will grow into adults who care about the environment.(在父母和教育工作者的一点点引导下,关心环境的孩子将成长为关心环境的成年人)”提到这样的话孩子们就会成长为关心环境的成年人。

There was a little boy named Johnson, who lived with his father in their attractive little cottage near a forest. They didn’t have much but were content with the little they had. Every day after he came home from school, Johnson would accompany his father to the forest to collect firewood.
One day, when Johnson was in the forest collecting wood, he came across a puppy (幼犬) which seemed to be all alone. Johnson looked here and there for his owner but in vain. So he picked him up, put him under his shirt and carried him home. Having reached home, he said to his father, “Dad, I found a little puppy alone in the forest! Can we keep him, please?” Feeling Johnson’s happiness, his father couldn’t decide whether to keep the puppy or not at the time. He told him, “Oh, Johnson, that’s the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen! But we don’t have much. What will we do about his food and sleeping arrangement?” Johnson replied, “It’s OK. I’ll give him half of my meals and let him sleep with me in my bedroom.” Hearing this, Johnson’s father just nodded. Johnson was wild with joy, and he named the puppy Rigo.
From that day onwards, Johnson and Rigo became the best friends. Rigo followed Johnson wherever he went. When Johnson went to school, Rigo would patiently wait outside the classroom till the classes ended. At night, Rigo slept next to Johnson on his tiny bed and dreamed sweet dreams.
On one particular day, Rigo was sick, unable to follow Johnson so he stayed at home. That day it rained heavily, and the roads everywhere turned slippery (湿滑的). On his way home, Johnson was trying to reach home as soon as possible as he imagined Rigo waiting for him and keeping him warm. Unfortunately, Johnson missed seeing a hole at the side of the road and fell down the hole! He cried for help, hoping to be heard by passers-by. But due to the loud thundering and noise of the heavy rain, no one heard him.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Johnson was trapped in the hole, not knowing whether he could be rescued. It had become very late, and Johnson’s mother was worried at home. She called the neighbors, and they formed a search party to find Johnson. Rigo too, was worried, and so he joined them all. They searched high and low but still couldn’t find Johnson. Rigo used his keen sense of smell and went sniffing everywhere. Then Rigo came closer to the hole.
Rigo barked and ran around the hole anxiously. Rigo’s behavior drew the search party’s attention, and they ran towards the hole. When they looked into it, they found Johnson sitting and shivering in the darkness, wet and cold. Some people comforted Johnson gently while others fetched a rope quickly and dropped it down to Johnson. He held onto one end and then they pulled him up. Everyone cheered, Rigo jumping around happily. Johnson’s mother hugged him tightly. Johnson thanked everyone for helping him and hugged Rigo lovingly for being his best friend and hero.

A. Visiting popular tourist attractions is only a waste of time.
B. When travelling, many tourists will miss their homes and friends.
