Jasper National Park saw an act of heroism on July 22. Colleen Knull, a kind volunteer firefighter, quickly jumped into action to save people from a wildfire.
As a volunteer firefighter, Knull was well-trained and experienced. When Knull noticed thick smoke rising from the mountainside, she knew what was happening. “My first thought was that there was a fire, so I used my experience to read the smoke, which way the wind blew and how close it was,” she later said.
Before all the people were ordered to evacuate (撤离), Knull was already in action. She rushed to a nearby hotel and knocked on doors one by one to warn the visitors. “Please be careful! There’s a fire coming. Get ready to evacuate,” she told each person she met. Then, Knull remembered that there was a hiker campground not far away. Those hikers might have no idea about the danger. Without thinking twice, she set off on foot. The path was dusty, and the air was getting hotter as she got closer to the campground. When she arrived, she started searching for the hikers and guided them to safety.
Rebecca Tocher, one of the hikers in Knull’s group, later described the terrible conditions. “It was really scary. Smoke was everywhere, and ash (灰) was falling all the time like a dark, dirty snow. It was hard to see clearly,” she said. “But luckily, we had Knull. She was an excellent leader and made sure that everyone was working together. She kept us calm and organized.”
Knull kept in touch with the search team and police all the time to help with the evacuation. She knew the roads well, so she could pick the fastest way. At last, she saved all 16 tourists. No one was seriously hurt.
This experience left a deep impression on Knull. She said, “This event made me truly eager to become a full-time firefighter. I want to be able to help more people in the future. I saw how much of a difference I could make, and I want to keep doing that.”

①China is making great efforts to help people manage their weight and live healthier lives. The government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” programme from 2024 to 2027 to fight against obesity (肥胖). Obesity can cause serious health problems, like diabetes and heart disease. Here’s what you should know about the new guidelines (指南):
②Firstly, it’s important to check your BMI (Body Mass Index). For adults, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is from 24 to 28, you’re overweight. A BMI of 28 or higher means you’re obese. Also, doctors suggest measuring your waist: men should keep it under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
③Eating right is very important, and exercise is too! When it comes to eating, choose whole grains like brown rice, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins such as fish, chicken, or beans. Stay away from fried foods and sugary snacks. And don’t eat too much salt and oil. Interestingly, the guidelines even include some delicious regional dishes (地方菜), like “stewed fish” from Northeast China or “noodles with chili oil” from Northwest China. This makes healthy eating both tasty and full of local flavors.
④For exercise, try to do 150—300 minutes of activities like walking, cycling or dancing every week. Do strength exercises twice a week. If you sit for hours when studying, stand up and stretch for 3—5 minutes every hour.
⑤Besides diet and exercise, small daily habits can also make a big difference. Teens should sleep for 7 hours every night. Bad sleep can make you gain weight. When eating, try to eat vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread to control how much you eat.
⑥Schools and communities are also helping. For example, schools in Shanghai make sure students exercise for at least two hours every day. Hospitals have “weight clinics” that offer diet plans, exercise advice, and even traditional Chinese treatments like acupuncture (针灸). By 2030, China hopes to slow down the increase of obesity through education and support.
⑦Remember, losing weight isn’t about being perfect. Just start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. With these easy steps, everyone can have a healthier future!
36.Why does the government start the “Weight Management Year” programme?
A.To encourage people to exercise.
B.To promote healthier eating habits.
C.To make people pay more attention to their appearance.
D.To work against obesity and its related health problems.
37.What do you know about the man if his waist measurement is 92 cm?
A.He is within the healthy range. B.He needs to lose some weight.
C.He has a perfect body shape. D.He should do more strength exercises.
38.What does “This” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Not eating too much salt and oil.

39.How can we divide the passage properly?

It was a Monday morning in April. Tina was sitting on a train to school, feeling a bit sleepy. She was reading a book when a voice came from the speaker. Usually, train announcements (通告) were boring, but this one made her look up.
“Good morning, everyone!” said the trainman. “It’s 7:35 a. m., and I’m happy to tell you we’ll arrive right on time. Look at Sydney today! The sun is shining brightly, like a big golden apple in the sky. The temperature is 21 degrees—just perfect for a walk in the park. Listen! Can you hear the birds singing outside? They sound like a little band welcoming the day. Thank you for choosing our train. I hope you have a wonderful day ahead!”
Around her, people were smiling! A lady next to her said, “What a nice way to start the day!” A boy in a school uniform turned to his friend and laughed, “Did he just call the sun a golden apple?” An old grandpa said, “Young people today need more kindness like this.” Even strangers started chatting about the beautiful words.
When the train stopped, Tina saw a young man with a uniform standing by the door. She realized it was him—the trainman! His name tag said “Tom”. Tina walked up to him shyly. “Hi, Tom! I just wanted to say thank you for your announcement. It made everyone so happy,” she said. Tom looked surprised at first, then his face turned red. “Oh, really? That’s nice to hear. I just thought... mornings can be hard, so why not add some sunshine?” he replied, smiling nervously.
That day, Tina learned two important lessons. First, when people love their jobs, their happiness shows in small, kind actions—like a trainman’s warm words. Second, saying “thank you” can make someone’s day great, especially when they don’t expect it. She wondered if Tom would go home and tell his family, “A girl thanked me today! Can you believe it?”
Years later, Tina still remembers that morning. A simple, kind message had turned a usual train ride into a heartwarming story.

B.Staying away from fried foods and sugary snacks.

45.What did Tina learn from the trip?
