You may not know their name, but you’ve probably seen photos of them swimming in hot springs online. They’re called capybaras (水豚), a kind of cute animals with some amazing facts.
They are big. As the world’s largest rodents (啮齿动物), adult capybaras can weigh up to 50 kg. They are as heavy as some humans! They can be up to 130 cm tall. Although they are fat, they can swim fast at a speed of up to 35 km/h.
They love water. Capybaras spend a lot of time in water. Their special feet help them move quickly through water, and they can also stay underwater for up to five minutes at a time. Capybaras like to sleep in water to avoid (避免) getting sunburnt.
They have an unusual diet. Capybaras love to eat hard grasses, which need to be chewed (咀嚼) many times. To finish the long chewing, capybaras’ teeth never stop growing. Capybaras also eat their own waste. They do this because the grasses they eat are too hard to digest (消化). By eating its waste, a capybara can get useful bacteria (细菌) into its stomach to help it digest food.
It’s clear that capybaras are valuable to humans. Whether they’re online or at your local zoo, these cute friends are sure to make you smile at them.

Bamboo is one of the most interesting and useful plants in the world. It belongs to the grass family and grows in many places, such as Asia and Africa. Bamboo loves warm and rainy climates, but some kinds can even grow in cold areas.
Bamboo can grow to over 30 metres tall—that’s as tall as a tree! What makes bamboo special is its growth speed. It can grow by up to 30cm in just one day, making it one of the fastest-growing plants on earth. In perfect conditions, certain kinds of bamboo can even grow by 1 metre in 24 hours.
People use bamboo in many ways. In some countries, people use bamboo to build houses, bridges, and furniture because it is strong and lasts a long time. It’s also turned into everyday things like chopsticks, baskets, and even musical instruments like flutes. It can also be cooked and eaten!
Bamboo is also good for the environment. It gives out more oxygen (氧气) than many trees and helps to clean the air. Many people call it “green gold” because it is eco-friendly and can replace plastic or wood in many things.
In China, bamboo is a symbol of strength and good luck. Artists often paint bamboo to show its beauty, and it’s a popular theme in poems and stories.
In short, bamboo is not just a plant—it’s a gift from nature. It gives us food, materials, and a healthier planet.

Dolphins are smart animals. They make different sounds to talk to each other. This makes some scientists very interested. They want to use computers to understand dolphin sounds better. These computers use artificial intelligence (AI). The scientists now hope to “talk” with dolphins in the sea.
One group called the Wild Dolphin Project has studied dolphins for many years. They have watched dolphins and listened to their sounds under the water. They learned that some sounds happen during certain actions. For example, dolphins may make a loud “squawk” when they are fighting. They may make a fast “buzz” when they like another dolphin.
Now, Google engineers are using the dolphin sound information. They made a smart computer program called Dolphin Gemma. It listens to the dolphin sounds and finds patterns (模式). The goal is to guess what sounds a dolphin might make next, just like how some phones guess what word you want to type.
The team also made a new system called CHAT. It uses special speakers in the ocean. These speakers play new whistle sounds that sound like dolphins’. The scientists try to teach dolphins that each sound means a kind of toy. If a dolphin makes the same sound back, it can get the toy. Dolphin Gemma helps the scientists know when the dolphin is asking for a toy.
Google wants to share Dolphin Gemma so other people can use it. Maybe they can study other animals too. This is just the beginning of learning how animals talk.
1.What did scientists of the Wild Dolphin Project find?
A.All dolphin sounds mean the same thing.
B.Dolphins can learn human speech patterns fast.
C.Dolphins only make sounds when they eat.
D.Different dolphin sounds happen during different activities.
2.What is the main goal of the CHAT system?
A.To help dolphins find food more easily.
B.To make dolphins know human words.
C.To let it help humans catch dolphins.
D.To test whether dolphins can connect sounds with things.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Google wants computers to do all the studies instead of people.
B.Google won’t let others use Dolphin-Gemma to do their studies.
C.There is still long way to go before scientists can know how animals talk exactly.
D.It’s more important for scientists to study other animals than dolphins.

Our earth has two very cold areas at its ends: the Arctic and the Antarctic (北极地区和南极地区). The Arctic is the area around the North Pole, while the Antarctic is the area around the South Pole. They have a lot in common, but they are also different in many ways.
The two places are very cold and covered with ice. Much of the ice there never melts (融化). Heavy snowstorms are common in both places.
One big difference is what is under the ice. Water is under most of the ice in the Arctic. However, land is under most of the ice in the Antarctic. Antarctica is a large continent (大陆). It has mountains, valleys and plains (山谷和平原). They are covered with ice.
The Arctic is warmer than the Antarctic. Plants grow in the Arctic in summer. The Antarctic has almost no plants because it is too cold. Only a few small plants grow there each summer.
Animals live in both places. Polar bears, for example, live in the Arctic. So do some foxes and wolves. Most animals cannot live in Antarctica because it is too cold. However, penguins can live there. Some animals, such as whales, can live in both places.
Many people live in the Arctic. There are towns and small cities in the land areas. However, the Antarctic is so cold that nobody can live there for long. Scientists who study the continent only stay there while they are working. They live in special buildings and don’t spend much time outside.

From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors? Fruit colors actually come from their different pigments (色素), such as red or yellow carotenoid (类胡萝卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin (花青素). These pigments appear in different numbers, depending on the fruit’s environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
To find out how environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. They found that red fruit likes to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warmer places. These fruits tend to grow a lot in just one special area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator (赤道), the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an influence on the evolution (演变) of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds (种子) in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruits develop (呈现出) colors that are easy for animals to see.
However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colors that are suited to animals’ visual abilities. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there tends to be more red fruit in areas where birds live. The lemurs (狐猴) of Madagascar are red-green color-blind. Many yellow fruit can be found in their living areas, as they can easily see this color.
1.According to paragraph 1, fruit colors depend on ________.
A.red carotenoid B.blue anthocyanin C.their numbers D.their environment
2.You are more likely to find blue and purple fruit in ________ places.
A.cooler B.warmer C.higher D.lower
3.Some fruits develop certain colors to ________.
A.frighten animals away B.get more sunlight
C.attract animals to eat them D.protect themselves
4.What do we know from the text?
A.Dark fruit enjoys growing close to the equator.
B.Green fruit is fond of growing in cool places.
C.Humans can see red more easily than birds.
D.Lemurs are color-blind and can’t see any colors.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A

Have you heard of a cloud forest? Is it the same as a rainforest? Actually, it’s a very special kind of forest in cloudy mountains. There, clouds brush through trees and wet their leaves. Rain falls almost every day. Hundreds of mosses (苔藓) grow and cover everything like a soft, green coat.
Plants in cloud forests live in an unusual way. They grow on the branches of trees instead of on the ground. The air is very damp, so plants can get all the water they need from the fog and rain. They live on the high parts of trees so that they can get more light to be stronger.
There are many kinds of special animals in cloud forests. For example, tree kangaroos live in trees like monkeys. They use their long tails to keep balance just as monkeys do. Some frogs have suckers (吸盘) on their toes so they can climb up trees and cross leaves easily. Many other special animals are waiting for us to discover, aren’t they?
Cloud forests are important to people. They give us healthy food crops, such as wild beans, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and strawberries. Furthermore, they offer new medicine to treat cancer. Unluckily, the beautiful forests are in danger now. Why? Firstly, the climate is getting warmer, but plants and animals in cloud forests like to live where it’s cool. It’s difficult for them to find a proper place to live. Secondly, people cut down many trees to plant crops or feed cows. The animals are losing their home.
Once cloud forests are gone, there must be a huge loss to humans. Save the cloud forests before it’s too late!

India is the home of tigers. Every year, many people are killed by tigers. Tiger, however, does not always eat men. It likes wild animals better. It is only when the tiger is old or wounded that it eats men. But once it has tasted the flesh of men, it goes on killing men for food. When a man-eater such as this is discovered, people are much afraid and they have to stop working in the fields. There are many ways to put an end to such dangerous animals. One way is that some men with long guns sit on elephants while other men drive the tiger towards them. Another way is for a hunter to sit on a tree near the place where a tiger has eaten somebody. If the tiger returns for another meal, the hunter will kill it in the hiding place. A goat may be tied to the tree for the tiger to kill. The most dangerous way is to hunt a tiger on foot, but the man must be brave and can shoot well or he would be killed by the tiger.

People know animals have feelings, but can we understand them? In order to find out, scientists studied dogs’ tails (尾巴). ________ It says that humans can tell if a dog is happy or sad by watching its tail.
First of all, the researchers showed dogs different things. Sometimes they gave the dogs their favorite toys or food. Sometimes there was nothing. When dogs saw something they liked, they wagged (摇动) their tails fast and high. When there was nothing, their tails moved slowly and low. During the whole process, the scientists used a camera to record these movements.
Then the researchers showed 10 videos of dog tail movements to 100 volunteers. Half of the videos showed happy tails, and the other half showed sad tails. About 70% of the volunteers correctly guessed the dogs’ true feelings, although some of them had never kept a dog before.
The result shows humans can naturally understand dogs’ feelings through their tails. Scientists hope that the study will help people take better care of pets. Now, some are working on a special machine (机器) to detect dogs’ feelings automatically. This could make dogs’ lives happier.

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s dark. Most of us go for our work and study in the daytime. We almost never see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there is always some type of artwork or story that includes an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s books, etc. So what makes owls so popular?
Some bird researchers believe owls’ popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. In order to see clearly in the dark, owls have evolved (进化) to have large eyes. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical (圆筒状的). So owls cannot roll (翻转) their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided (不平衡)—the left ear is a little higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s whole face acts like a satellite dish (圆盘式卫星接收器) for sound waves. Their beaks (鸟喙) are very small so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as strange and wonderful animals. For a long time, people made up lots of myths (神话) about them. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some say owls are witches (女巫) in disguise (伪装). These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made them become more popular!
1.According to Paragraph 2, owls cannot roll their eyes because ________.
A.their eyes are too large B.their heads are too big
C.their necks are too short D.their eyes are cylindrical
2.According to Paragraph 3, where are owl’s ears usually located (位于)?
A.①② B.③④ C.①④ D.②③
3.Which of the following is NOT the reason that owls have a good sense of hearing?
A.Their ears are lopsided. B.Their beaks are very small.
C.Their faces are like satellite dishes. D.They turn their heads almost around on their necks.
4.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.It tells us some information about owls’ look.
B.It tells us why owls are so popular.
C.It tells us some myths about owls.
D.It tells us the special abilities of owls.

The she-wolf and One-Eye walked for two days. The she-wolf was still searching for something. One-Eye knew what she was looking for. They came to the opening of a cave (洞穴). The she-wolf went inside. One-Eye waited at the mouth of the cave and lay in the sun.
The she-wolf walked deeper into the cave. It was larger inside than at the opening. It was warm and dry. The opening was small enough for her to stop anything dangerous from coming inside. She found what she needed.
One-Eye entered the cave, but the she-wolf growled at him, and he quickly backed out. He was hungry, so he decided to hunt. He found wild animals, but he could not catch them. He got back to the opening of the cave and tried to enter the cave, but the she-wolf growled at him again angrily. She gave birth to five wolf cubs (幼崽). She knew that male (雄性的) wolves sometimes ate their cubs.
One-Eye was not that kind of wolf. He knew he had to find food for his mate and cubs. He set off to hunt again. Soon, he saw an animal. But as he walked toward it, it rolled (卷) itself into a ball. One-Eye knew it was a porcupine (豪猪), an animal with sharp spines (刺). When it was attacked, it shot these spines at its attacker. He had to give up. He came to the riverside and caught a bird. He was hungry and began to eat the bird. He remembered the she-wolf and cubs in the cave and stopped eating. He picked up the dead bird and began to carry it back to the cave.
One-Eye saw the porcupine again. A lynx (山猫) was watching secretly. The lynx was waiting for the right moment to attack the porcupine. The porcupine thought it was safe and began to unroll. When it unrolled, the lynx ran to the porcupine and tried to bite it. The porcupine quickly rolled itself up again and shot sharp spines into the lynx. The lynx jumped into the air in great pain and then ran away quickly.
The porcupine was badly hurt and half rolled up. One-Eye could see a good place to bite it, but he waited until he was sure the porcupine was dead. Then he picked it up. He quickly ate the bird and carried the dead porcupine back to the cave.
The she-wolf let him come in with the food. She knew now that he was not the kind of mate who would eat the cubs. She knew he would take care of her and wolf cubs.

Cats love fish, but they hate water—these two commonly believed ideas seem to contradict (与……矛盾) each other. But do cats really hate water?
Although furry cats at home can enjoy fish while staying clean and dry, wild cats are willing to get their paws wet to catch a tasty treat. This shows that it is a mistake to believe that all cats hate water, says Wailani Sung, a veterinary behaviorist (动物行为学家) from California. She explains that each cat is different—some cats like water, while others don’t. This is similar to dogs, according to Carlo Siracusa, another veterinary behaviorist. He points out that though many dogs like water, some dogs dislike water, just like cats.
One reason why people think cats dislike water is that most pet cats live indoors, while dogs are often taken outside. This gives dogs more chances to get used to water. Another reason is that most pet dogs are regularly washed, but cats usually clean themselves with their tongues—no water needed.
Though cats may avoid water, they have good reasons for doing so. Cats have special hairs on their bodies that help them feel the world around them, and getting these hairs wet may disturb (干扰) how they sense the environment. Wet fur can also make cats feel cold, as their fur helps keep them warm by trapping (锁住) air.
Cats, as prey animals, also avoid situations that seem dangerous or unpredictable. Even though they are skilled hunters, they can be vulnerable to other animals. This makes them uncomfortable in situations where they feel unsafe. Siracusa explains that cats usually dislike new things they cannot control. Being in water could be one of these things.
Since cats can clean themselves with their tongues, there is usually no need to worry if your cat avoids water. Healthy cats can take care of their own fur. Siracusa suggests that if you want to wash your cat, you should let them get used to water slowly, so the cat feels safe during the process.
House cats may need more encouragement to drink water. Over time, cats get used to getting most of their water from the food they eat, rather than having to find it in the dry environments in which they grow up. Siracusa suggests providing several water bowls around the house, with at least one placed away from the feeding area.
Using water to punish cats for bad behavior is not a good idea, no matter how the animal feels about water. Sung explains that our reaction is often too late for cats to understand, which can lead them to feel scared of their owners. Instead, Sung advises people to use positive ways like a reward.
1.Why does the writer mention dogs in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain why cats tend to avoid water more often than dogs in everyday life.
B.To show animals of the same type can have different feelings towards water.
C.To suggest that dogs are usually given more chances to get used to water.
D.To tell that cats and dogs have some cleaning habits in common.
2.What does the phrase “be vulnerable to” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Be greatly supported by. B.Be deeply respected by.
C.Be easily harmed by. D.Be widely hated by.
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Owners should let their cats get used to water quickly to feel safe.
B.Owners can improve cats’ behavior by punishing them with water.
C.Cats should depend on drinking water instead of getting it from their food.
D.Cats may avoid water because getting wet makes it hard for them to stay warm.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D

Here are three amazing animals. How much do you know about them?1. Black mamba
This dangerous snake lives in Africa. In fact, it isn’t black. Its body can be grey or dark brown. The inside of its mouth is dark blue, almost black. That’s how it got its name. As one of the fastest snakes in the world, it can move at a speed of up to 16 km/h!2. Golden poison frog
Deep in the darkest Colombian rainforest sits a little killer. It feeds on many kinds of insects. Like most poison dart frogs (箭毒蛙), the golden poison frog only uses its poison as a way to protect itself instead of killing other animals. Sadly, the number of these frogs is falling because people cut down trees, clear land for farming and so on.3. Proboscis monkey
Proboscis monkeys get the name from their long nose. They live on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia and usually live in groups. They can walk upright (直立地) through water. This is what makes them special. Although people are saving proboscis monkeys, there are fewer and fewer of them.
1.What gave the black mamba its name?
A.Its living place. B.Its moving speed.
C.The color of its nose. D.The color inside its mouth.

C.To tell people not to cut down bamboo forests.
D.To show the importance and good points of bamboo.
4.What’s the best title of the text?
A.The future of studying how animals talk.

Mangroves (红树林) are important for our earth. They can take in plenty of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and make the air fresh. But around the world, the cities are developing and bringing us pollution (污染), so many mangrove forests are lost.
Shenzhen is working hard to help mangroves. The city is small and busy, but it keeps 1% of the main city part for mangroves. The city even moves the Coastal Highway to protect the mangroves. To bring back the mangroves, the city also plants more mangroves in some right places. Now, the Futian Mangrove National Nature Reserve becomes home to migratory birds.
Many people in Shenzhen like helping mangroves. They enjoy activities like planting trees and making more people know about mangroves. But there aren’t many chances (机会) for them to join in. So, the city needs to do more and gives chances to let people help.

1.What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The freezing weather in both places. B.How the ice can stay there for so long.
C.Where the ice in both places comes from. D.Reasons for the terrible weather in both places.
2.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The Arctic. B.Antarctica. C.The earth. D.The ice.

C.The summer temperatures help the Arctic plants to grow.
D.No ice melts in the Arctic or the Antarctic all year round.
4.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To explain the importance of saving water.
B.To tell us the Arctic and the Antarctic have a lot in common.
C.To help scientists learn more about the Arctic and the Antarctic.
D.To describe the similarities and differences between the Arctic and the Antarctic.

It’s June. The best time to eat lychees is coming again! Many people enjoy eating this sweet fruit. But have you found that it is hard to keep lychees fresh?
Lychees lose water quickly because of their special skin. It has many small holes that let water run out easily. Also, the inside is not connected to (连接) the skin. After picking, the skin can’t send water inside.
Like us, fruits breathe. Lychees breathe 3 times faster than other fruits! They use sugars and nutrients (营养), making them lose flavor (风味) and turn brown.
More importantly, they let out a bad gas that dries fruits fast.
Lychees are very easy to spoil, but scientists have a useful solution. They freeze fresh lychees at -35℃. This forms small ice crystals (冰晶) to protect cells, keeping flavor!
1.Why do lychees lose water quickly?
A.They grow in cold weather B.Their skin has small holes
C.They have thick skin D.People wash them too much
2.Which is NOT a reason why lychees go bad so fast?
A.Skin and fruit aren’t connected B.They let out drying gas
C.They grow only in June D.Fast breathing uses nutrients
