Marilla: I saw the doctor. But it’s no good talking about it, Anne. Can you get me a cup of tea?
Anne: Could you tell me what the doctor said?
Marilla: He said I must give up all reading, sewing, and farming, or I will go blind.
Anne: Marilla, don’t think of it. There is still hope.
Marilla: I don’t know. I’m afraid I have to sell Green Gables.
Anne : Oh, Marilla, you can’t! It’s our home!
Marilla(cry): What else can I do, Anne? I’m sorry you won’t have a home to come to during your university holidays.
(After a while)
Anne (smile): You mustn’t sell Green Gables. I’m going to teach here. I can’t leave you alone, Marilla. I’ll read to you.
We’ll be happy together.
Read the story and find out what Anne's decision is.
1
Anne's decision is to stay at Green Gables to look after Marilla and teach there.
Discuss the questions.
2
1. What is the problem at the beginning of the story?
2. What are Anne’s two dreams?
3. Why does Anne make her decision?
4. Why doesn’t Mrs. Lynde think Anne is foolish?
5. What do you think will happen next?
The problem at the beginning is that Marilla is sick and so
she will have to sell their home, Green Gables.
Anne's two dreams are to be a good teacher and to help Marilla stay healthy.
Anne makes her decision because she can't leave Marilla alone and can't let her home be sold.
Mrs Lynde doesn't think Anne is foolish because she can see how happy they are there together and how important their home is to Anne.
Marilla will stay healthy and they will live happily together. Anne will become a great teacher.
