BS Section Ⅱ Lesson 2 & Lesson 3 Meet the New Boss: You 遇见新老板:你 Up until the 1980s, people in many countries regularly followed in their parents' footsteps by working in the family business or joining the same profession as them. You'd follow your father to sea, onto the farm or into the workshop. You'd follow your mother into the kitchen or sewing room. 脚步声 ②follow__in__one's__footsteps 继承某人的事业,步某人的后尘 ③profession n. In your grandparents' time, there was the prospect of doing the same job from graduation until retirement. How times have changed! Most people now have no intention of following in their parents' footsteps or even staying at one job for very long. In fact, planning to work in the same field or industry for your entire working life just isn't practical anymore. One reason for this is technology. The skills you have now are unlikely to remain relevant and be enough to help you through your entire career. In fact, they will probably be out of date very soon. And then what will you do? Work hard? Win the lottery? Hope for the best? You might be lucky. These strategies might bring you a nice, comfortable life: working at a job you like, earning a decent salary and retiring while you're still young and healthy. But most of us today have to look beyond the little box called “career”. If you think you can work eight hours a day and build a career, think again. •You might be able to keep your job if you finish what you are asked to do, but this is hardly a recipe for great career success. Instead, you'd better keep looking for smarter ways to do your work. (You might be ... asked to do)+but+分句(this is ... success)”。 第一个分句的主结构为“主句+条件状语从句”,what you are asked to do是宾语从句,作finish的宾语;第二个分句中for great career success是介词短语作后置定语,修饰recipe。 You'll need to be a risk taker, an innovator, a problem solver, and a hard worker. Keep doing this, and you can become an expert or a specialist in something one day. •You have a chance to choose to build a career, rather than being told to stay or to go. 专家 ⑭“主(You)谓(have)宾(a chance)”。rather than being told to stay or to go 在句中作状语, rather than意为“而不是”, being told to stay or to go作rather than的宾语。 Jobs and occupations come and go at an amazing pace these days. If you think you can't be replaced by software, or your job can't be outsourced to some robots on the moon, you are wrong. •What if your job disappears after working for 10 years in the field? You may have to go back to the classroom and be retrained in order to qualify to work in another field. Born to a Jewish family in Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and performed surgery. In 1322 she was tried for practicing unlawfully. In spite of the court hearing testimonials (证明) of her ability as a doctor, she was banned from medicine. James Barry (c.1789-1865) was born Margaret Bulkley in Ireland but, dressed as a man, she was accepted by Edinburgh University to study medicine. She qualified as a surgeon in 1813, then joined the British Army, serving overseas. Barry retired in 1859, having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a man. Tan Yunxian (1461-1554) was a Chinese physician who learned her skills from her grandparents. Chinese women at the time could not serve apprenticeships (学徒期) with doctors. However, Tan passed the official exam. Tan treated women from all walks of life. In 1511, Tan wrote a book, Sayings of a Female Doctor, describing her life as a physician. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895) worked as a nurse for eight years before studying in medical college in Boston in 1860. Four years later, she was the first African American woman to receive a medical degree. September 4 was a lucky day for Zhang Tian. On this day, Zhang Tian saw a video about patient escorts on a short video platform. The daily routine of patient escorts shown in the video fascinated her and gradually inspired her to take this on as a business. She browsed through many platforms and read much information and found there indeed exists a certain demand for patient escorts, especially for the elderly, children, and pregnant women. Since she had never engaged in this kind of work before, she spent two days in major hospitals in Wuhan, in order to familiarize herself with all the departments on different floors, as well as the processes of medical consultation and preparation for surgery. After preliminary preparatory (预备的) work, Zhang Tian posted a video of her selfintroduction on major social platforms, talking about the help and services a patient escort provides, as well as some tips for a quick and convenient medical consultation. At first, she was a little worried that her video would go unnoticed. However, after she uploaded the video, it got over 100 likes and she received her first ever offer as a patient escort. The memory of her first task is still alive and fresh in her mind. She received a phone call on September 9 from a man whose father was seriously ill and might need surgery. He wanted Zhang Tian to accompany his father through his consultation and treatment. But today, things stand differently. According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger (视频博主)”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers. This change is undoubtedly a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audiences all around the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way. In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting with their fans about everyday life. However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever. Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don't necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It's an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that's enough for him. 1.Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers? A.Vloggers can earn greater fame and more money on the Internet. A.Only a few vloggers can be famous and wealthy. B.A vlogger can not earn fame and fortune. C.People often see the bright side of being a vlogger. But in my case, while two doctors were doing the operation, I was checking my phone every 20 seconds to see how much longer until I could leave. I didn't belong there; I was only pretending to be there. The truth was, halfway through university, I knew I didn't want to be a doctor. And I had to decide whether to keep lying to myself, or change course. Before university, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I'd always wanted to major in English but my parents didn't approve, saying there was no money in it. So I figured I'd just pick a career that looked wellpaid, satisfying, and would make my parents proud. “Doctor” hit all three, so I decided to do medicine. I knew all the coursework wouldn't be easy, but didn't expect to find it as hard as I did. I spent many late nights and weekends studying my brains out, but still didn't get good grades. I just couldn't get the material to stick to my brain. By exam time, my grades were terrible and I felt like a fool, but I thought maybe a medical internship (实习医生期) would help raise my spirits. Absurdly, my internship was where I realized how little I wanted to be a doctor. Every day I'd just go into work and do exactly what I was told, go where I was told to go, and watch what I was told to watch. And then I'd go home. It was fun whenever I got to play with expensive microscopes or watch crazy surgeries, but the rest of the time I struggled to get through the day. The other interns, however, practically worked so hard. They were so driven. I thought, “Wow, these interns really want to be doctors. I obviously don't.” It was a sad realization that led to a sadder, scarier question: If I didn't want to be a doctor, what did I want to do? It wasn't an easy decision. Eventually, I changed my course to English writing and suddenly I was enjoying university. [精彩范文] It wasn't an easy decision. I had two choices—either keep lying to myself or do a different degree. Changing course would make the past two years of university a waste of time and money. But I realized that though I'd hate myself for quitting, I'd hate myself more if I ended up being a terrible doctor. I was glad to move on to something new, but I had to deal with my parents' constant disappointment and complaining about my future. Eventually, I changed my course to English writing and suddenly I was enjoying university. I was still studying my brains out writing all night and through the weekend, but, this time, enjoying the pain. I'd spend hours perfecting a single paragraph until I was happy with it. Five hours felt like 20 seconds because I was having so much fun striking my head on the keyboard until good words came out. I started looking for internships that would give me experience in professional writing. Fortunately, I made it as an editorial assistant at a website.
