Success Comes with a High EQ
Most students do an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test early in their school life.
•Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is what determines how well they are going to do in life.
When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do to change their situation.
However, new research into EQ (Emotional Quotient) suggests that success is not simply the result of a high IQ.
①intelligence n.
②determine vt.
③quotient n.
(Even if they never see their results)+主句(they feel that ... do in life)”。主句中that引导宾语从句,从句的结构为“主(their IQ)系(is)表(what determines how well they are going to do in life)”,what在表语从句中作主语,其中how引导宾语从句,在从句中作状语。
•While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence.
Professor Salovey, who invented the term EQ, gives the following description: at work, it is IQ that gets you employed, but it is EQ that gets you promoted.
•Supported by his research, Professor Salovey suggests that when predicting someone's future success, their character, as measured by EQ tests, might actually matter more than their IQ.
⑤employ vt.& n.
⑥intelligent adj.
⑦“While+分句(your IQ ... you are)+分句(your EQ ... intelligence)”。
⑧“主(Professor Salovey)谓(suggests)宾(that when predicting ... than their IQ)”。Supported by his research是过去分词短语作状语,宾语从句中when predicting someone's future success作状语;as measured by EQ tests是状语从句的省略,补充完整为as it is measured by EQ tests。
Professor Salovey may be correct.
For example, have you ever wondered why some of the smartest students in your class, who you think deserve good grades, sometimes end up failing exams?
Perhaps their failure is because of their lower EQ.
People are often mistaken in thinking that those with high IQs always have high EQs as well.
This association can exist, but it is just as possible for someone with a low IQ to have a high EQ or someone with a high IQ to have a low EQ.

It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life.
They are also less likely to be troubled by internal problems.
On the other hand, there is little doubt that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people and dealing with difficult situations; hence they have a harder time adjusting in life and in their careers.

Some are trying to study the possibility of improving a person's EQ, especially in terms of “people kills”, such as understanding and communication.
Professor Mayer, recognised by many as a leading expert in the study of changes to people's EQs, recently announced the results of a study on senior secondary school students.

Altogether, the results of studies show that EQ is as important, if not more important than IQ.

To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life requires getting on well with other people and being able to understand and react to situations in the best way possible.

solely adv.
“主(the fact)谓(means)宾(that schools need to ... the entire character)”。that it ... raise EQs是that引导的同位语从句,解释说明主语the fact;宾语从句的结构为“主(schools)谓(need)宾(to make sure that their students ... the entire character)”,其中they really need是定语从句,修饰先行词education;not solely based on ... entire character是过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰education。

be动词:is/am/are/was/were

如:left(剩余的),given(所给的),concerned(有关的)等。

Do first impressions matter? A colleague thinks so. As each semester (学期) begins, he greets his students wearing a jacket and tie.
“You make only one first impression,” he says. So while the rest of the semester he teaches class in his usual, more casual clothes, during the first week he presents a different image.
Looking professional and trustworthy on the first day, he believes, will carry over through the rest of the semester, when he goes back to the work clothes until he meets new students.
His thought is that students will remember their first meet positively and more willingly give__him__the__benefit__of__the__doubt as the semester goes on because they have been prepared to respect him through that pleasing first impression.
The effect of first impression is related to the halo effect (光环效应), by which the belief in positive qualities in one thing or part leads to the belief in similar qualities in related things or in the whole.
Here is an example: You meet a friendly person at a party and later are asked to get support from others for a worthy career. You contact that person because you think he or she will make a contribution. In reality, there is no inbuilt connection between being pleasant and being generous. Yet the halo effect leads you to believe that the two are related. Most conclude that if she was good in one kind (sociable), she will also be positive in another (generous).
First impressions matter, for good and bad. They are fine when you like someone on first meeting; they are not so fine when the first meeting is unpleasant. Good first impressions lead to social connection; bad first impressions lead to social prejudice (偏见).

B
By my mid20s, I'd finished my master's in psychology, and I was working in Dublin as a health researcher. It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning more than most of my friends, living a city life, going out at weekends. I had a good pension (养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry. I was really unhappy.
I wanted to get back to feeling passionate about something so I started thinking about the things I used to love. As a child, I'd always been involved in the outdoors, and I used to love hiking but all that had stopped after secondary school. I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I'd gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it. It__was__like__switching__on_
_a__lightbulb. This was what I'd been missing.
I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I was working my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I loved connecting with nature, connecting with other people.
Through all this, I learnt about the whole field of naturebased therapies (疗法). It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology. I left my government job and in July 2020 I launched my business Nature Therapy Ireland, which is booming now.
I'd thought I'd always live in a city but last year, I moved to Tipperary to live at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by nature. If I'm feeling stressed, I can step outside in my bare feet and stand on the grass to ground myself. In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier—I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I've adjusted. I've never looked back.

根据最后一段中的“In Dublin, the front door ... I've never looked back.”

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy: working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road face down and rolled over. He lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus drove away quickly. The cars directly behind the bus braked to avoid the boy, but none stopped. I knew that if the boy was bleeding into his brain, he could die soon. I stopped my car. I lifted his unconscious body into my car with the help of some passersby, and then raced back to the hospital. Since I wasn't allowed into the operation room, I drove home.
The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands and started weeping. “Son, you are an angel,” she repeated over and over again. After comforting her, I went over to the boy. He managed to smile and squeezed my hand. No words were spoken between us—none were needed. I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement, the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
