Coconut Paintings Bring Happiness to Tourists C Amsterdam is well-known for its network of canals (运河), but many may not know that its waterways have become a danger for the cats in the city. They are endangered together by its commonly-seen canals, high walls, and narrow streets. Now, Amsterdam is trying to build mini wooden staircases (楼梯) leading out of the water and onto the banks to help the cats if they fall in the water. For this project, over 100,000 euros will be spent to build the tiny staircases at various points along its waterways as part of a cat safety drive. Euro News details that cats accidentally fall into canals when something scares them. While they are able to swim, they quickly run out of energy as the water weighs down their fur (毛). This creative plan to give cats and other small animals a way out of the city’s canals which can endanger them was developed after 19 cats died in the city’s canals in the last six months. It was presented by Judith Krom of the Party for the Animals. Krom, who has called this a simple move that can prevent animal suffering, says this shows the city’s wish to take responsibility for protecting the lives of animals. It turns out that the city’s animal welfare chief, Zita Pels, had previously supported this step, but she had put the idea aside because there had not been enough money. Krom, however, found out unused 100,000 euros in her biodiversity budget for wildlife, giving this project the green light. Today, the city’s Dierenambulance Amsterdam animal welfare organization is on call to provide an ambulance (救护车) service around the clock to help animals in medical need. It has been tasked with working with the city to choose sites where the most accidental cat falls have happened. 8. Why is Amsterdam trying to build staircases along its waterways? A. To protect cats. B. To make money. C. To attract tourists. D. To beautify the canals. 9. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 3? A. To show the weakness of local tourism. B. To tell the reason for driving cats away. C. To prove the risk of swimming in canals. D. To stress the necessity of building staircases. 10. What made Zita Pels fail to take the step? A. Having little time. B. Shortage of money. C. Her dislike for the idea. D. Failing to find suitable sites. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. A study on cats. B. A city project. C. A safe home for animals. D. A travel destination. D A study showed when children who were picky (挑剔的) eaters got to choose their own food (school dinners)at lunchtime, they were less picky in what they ate, compared with a packed lunch. This is the first time that lunchtime food behaviors in picky children have been studied outside of the home, and away from family influence. In the study, picky children were less likely than non-picky eaters to have meat or fish sandwich fillings in packed lunches, and more likely to have fillings such as marmite, peanut butter or cheese spread in packed lunches. They were also less likely to eat fruit or salad in packed lunches. However, when picky children ate school dinners, they did not avoid meat, fish or fruit anymore. They ate different kinds of foods and made more similar choices to those non-picky eaters. It is well-known that picky children eat fewer vegetables and fruits than others. But they are crucial for children to get the fibre, vitamins and minerals that they require for healthy development and to avoid long-term health problems. Therefore, ways to encourage children to eat more vegetables and fruits are favored. “Every child is different, and what works for some won’t work for others. We found that school dinners could be a good choice to increase variety (多样化) in the diets of picky teens,” said Dr Caroline Taylor, lead researcher and Associate Professor in Nutrition at the University of Bristol. “We know that most picky children eat enough, but they sometimes don’t have a good balance of foods. It’s important to encourage all children to eat enough fruits and vegetables to help them grow and develop, whether that’s at home or at school.” Of course, there are many things parents can do to encourage a healthy diet. Whether that is enjoying family meals together, modelling a balanced diet themselves, or allowing children to prepare meals, it all helps. 12. What can we learn about the study from paragraph l? A. It is led by picky eaters. B. It is of pioneering value. C. It focuses on family meals. D. It is against eating at school. 13. What were the picky children likely to do when eating school dinners? A. Avoid meat, fish or fruit. B. Influence non-picky eaters. C. Eat a wider variety of foods. D. Enjoy packed lunches as well. 14. What does the underlined word “crucial” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Expensive. B. Important. C. Delicious. D. Meaningless. 15. What does the author try to do in the last paragraph? A. Offer advice. B. Give a warning. C. Raise questions. D. Make guesses. Changing schools means leaving behind your old school, friends, and neighborhood. Simple tasks like shopping became a challenge for him. He lived alone in an apartment overlooking a park, where a group of three teenagers from a local school gathered(聚集)each afternoon. Usually, they would just share snacks and exchange some jokes. But sometimes they would run after each other or loudly play some light jokes on people walking through the park. Most people chose to stay away from them, and so did Richard. He had the impression that those teenagers were impolite and noisy. But when he realized that he had to crutch his way to the corner store for his daily milk—right through the same park, Richard felt uneasy. The first time Richard walked past, the teenagers were looking toward him and said something secretly. “They must be making fun of me,” Richard thought. He could feel their eyes following him until he walked out of the park. The next afternoon, Richard bought a bag of food, including his daily milk. Then he walked slowly on crutches back home carrying the heavy bag. When he was trying to cross the park, he caught sight of the teenagers again. He was hoping that they wouldn’t notice him. However, things didn’t go as planned. One of the teenagers called something out to Richard which he didn’t quite catch. He thought the teenager was laughing at him, but he didn’t want to get himself into any trouble, so he kept walking. But then, to Richard’s surprise, the teenager and two others ran up to him. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ However, the three teenagers’ kindness didn’t end on that day. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025~2026学年度第一学期高一10月联考 英 语 考生注意: l. 1. They are endangered together by its commonly-seen canals, high walls, and narrow streets. Now Amsterdam is trying to build mini wooden staircases (楼梯) leading out of the water and onto the banks to help the cats if they fall in the water. 8. A 9. D 10. B 11. A It is led by picky eaters. B. It is of pioneering value. C. It focuses on family meals. D. It is against eating at school. 13. What were the picky children likely to do when eating school dinners? A. Avoid meat, fish or fruit. B. Influence non-picky eaters. C. Eat a wider variety of foods. D. Enjoy packed lunches as well. 14. What does the underlined word “crucial” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Expensive. B. Important. C. Delicious. D. Meaningless. 15. What does the author try to do in the last paragraph? A. Offer advice. B. Give a warning. C. Raise questions. D. Make guesses. B 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第三段“But they are crucial for children to get the fibre, vitamins and minerals that they require for healthy development and to avoid long-term health problems. Therefore, ways to encourage children to eat more vegetables and fruits are favored. 根据最后一段“Of course, there are many things parents can do to encourage a healthy diet. If it doesn’t help, you might consider speaking privately with your teacher, asking if a seat change could be arranged. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: But then, to Richard’s surprise, the teenager and two others ran up to him. Shocked by their sudden approach, Richard stopped in his tracks. Sensing Richard’s confusion, one teenager said, “Sir, need any help? You are struggling!” Before Richard could respond, one of them had already taken the bag while another two offered to support Richard’s arms. They walked slowly beside him, ensuring Richard walked safely across the park and finally to his apartment. Richard expressed his sincere thanks before the teenagers left. However, the three teenagers’ kindness didn’t end on that day. Over the next few months, they became a great help to Richard. They went grocery shopping for him, took his rubbish out and even aided him in doing some exercise for recovery. Whenever he walked past them, they would ask how he was and offer necessary help. Gradually, with the help of the three teenagers, whom had been mistakenly considered unfriendly, Richard fully recovered. 词汇激活 行为类 ①提供帮助:offer help / give a hand ②搀扶:support / assist ③康复:recover / get well 情绪类 ①困惑:confusion / bewilderment ②挣扎:struggle / strive 【点睛】[高分句型1] Shocked by their sudden approach, Richard stopped in his tracks.(使用了过去分词短语作状语) [高分句型2] Gradually, with the help of the three teenagers, whom had been mistakenly considered unfriendly, Richard fully recovered.(使用了关系代词whom引导的非限定性定语从句,先行词为teenagers) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
