FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS
Economic development is necessary if1 we want to improve society. There comes a time2 when3 the old must give way to the new, and4 it5 is not possible to preserve everything from our past as6 we move towards the future. Finding and keeping the right balance7 between progress and the protection of cultural sites8 can be a big challenge.
Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam9 across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and10 supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that11 were an important part of Egypt's cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who12 lived near the dam, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.
A committee was established to limit13 damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments14 and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and15 then made a proposal for how16 the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.

The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down17 piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where18 they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and19 countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project.

When20 the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only21 had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that22 it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow.
The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. Many of China's ancient buildings were in danger of being destroyed before Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng started to document them in the 1930s. The husband and wife team were among the first people to work on preserving these buildings in China, and they are also the most wellknown. Their efforts have inspired generations of people to speak out for architecture that is threatened by rapid development.
Becoming China's best architectural historians was not an easy task. The buildings they wanted to save were centuries old and often located in distant parts of the country. In many cases, they had to travel through dangerous areas in the Chinese countryside to reach them. During the 1930s, exploring remote areas in China meant traveling on muddy, poorly maintained roads by mule or on foot. Inns were often dirty, food could be polluted, and there was always a risk of violence from rebels, soldiers, and robbers.
Their greatest discovery was the Temple of Buddha's Light in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The breathtaking wooden temple was rebuilt in 857 AD, making it the oldest building known in China at the time.
Liang and Lin crawled into the temple's most forbidding, forgotten areas to determine its age. One area they explored was inhabited by thousands of bats and millions of bedbugs, covered in dust and littered with dead bats. “In complete darkness and among awful smell, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our noses and mouths, we measured, drew, and took pictures with flashlights for several hours. When we finally came out to take a breath of fresh air, we found hundreds of bedbugs in our bags. We ourselves had been badly bitten. However, the importance and unexpectedness of our find made those hours the happiest of my years hunting for ancient architecture,” Liang wrote about this experience in a book called Liang and Lin: Partners in Exploring China's Architectural Past.

In some parts of China, mainly in Anhui Province and Zhejiang Province, spread groups of greytiled and whitewalled houses, forming one of the most typical scenes captured in traditional Chinese landscape paintings. It is Huistyle architecture, one of the major Chinese architectural styles of ancient times.
Huistyle architecture developed into a significant building school in the Song Dynasty. In the midMing Dynasty, gardens and houses constructed with Hui styles developed very quickly along with the success of Hui commerce. Huistyle architecture soon stepped out from Huizhou and was introduced to big towns.
Huistyle architecture is characterized by the arrangement of villages together with nature, and a simple and beautiful exterior (外观).
Huistyle houses are usually ones with skylights (天井). With a square skylight surrounded by houses from four sides or from left, right and backside, these houses can reduce the beat of sunshine and enjoy ventilation (通风). All the houses gathers water from the skylight which means fortune will not run off outside.
In ancient times, the colors used for buildings were very strict. Bright colors could only be used in palaces, temples and official buildings. So people in Huizhou chose the black and white colors to paint their houses.
Generally speaking, the exterior appearance of Huistyle buildings differs little while their interior can vary a lot based on the wishes of the owners. Home decoration is characterized by three types of Hui carving: stone carving, wood carving and brick carving.
To take a look at the Huistyle architecture, Xidi Village in Yixian County, Anhui Province, is the best place to go. It is a site of typical Huistyle houses, and one of the “Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui” that have been collectively listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Have you heard of shikumen houses (石库门) in Shanghai? It is a type of architecture that combines Western culture and traditional Chinese residential characteristics. It uses stone as door frames (门框) and solid wood in black lacquer (漆) as door leaves (门扇). Over the past 100 years, many significant historical events have been seen in shikumen houses, such as the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 1921.

The students opened accounts on WeChat and Instagram to share information about shikumen houses, such as the significance of their architectural design and how they reflect Shanghai culture. To draw more young people's attention to shikumen houses, they also created original IP figures called “Kuku” and “Tiantian”. The students even created a series of WeChat stickers of Kuku and Tiantian, which now have been used by more than 10,000 people.

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.
As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.
“I am no longer a kid; I won't play around trees anymore,” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”
“Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.
The tree was upset.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. “Come and play with me,” the tree said.
“I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, I don't have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.
The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn't appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree requested.
“I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my trunk to build the boat and you can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Many years later, the boy finally returned. Tired, he returned to the apple tree. Seeing him, the tree said, “I'm sorry, boy, but now I have nothing for you.” “I don't intend to get anything from you. With time going by, I come to realize nothing is better than a comfortable place to rest.” said the boy. Hearing this, the tree smiled with relief, adding, “My dying trunk is suitable for you. Please come here and rest.” The boy did as told and the tree smiled heartily.
The apple tree is our mother. When we are young, she tries to attend to and play with us. After growing up, we leave her for some reasons and only come back when in trouble. But she is always out there, devoting whatever she owns without complaint. It is our happiness, rather than rewards, that she desires for. Therefore, try to put ourselves in her situation and show concern for her.

The structure protects the site from the weather, including heavy wind, snow and hail, and its design fits in with the surrounding environment, Qin Changwei, secretary-general of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, said at the 2nd World Cultural and Natural Heritage Forum in Beijing on Nov.17 and 18. “It provides a reference for the protection of precious cultural relics, and suggests measures for helping heritage sites respond to the influence of climate change.”
Organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the Auspices of UNESCO (Beijing), and the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation among others, the forum brought together some 50 professionals to discuss the protection and sustainable development of heritage sites. Scholars stressed the influence of climate change on heritage sites, and offered suggestions for how to solve the problem.
“Entering the 21st century, climate change has been the subject of in-depth discussion by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Questions like how to balance between humans and nature, how to respond to natural disasters caused by climate change, and what new challenges this brings to World Heritage Sites, are worth consideration,” says Qin. “Solving the problem requires us to unify, making full use of advanced technology, such as space and digital technologies, and jointly developing risk prevention and response plans,” he adds.
