The neighbourhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, highrise buildings have appeared. If we continue in this way, nothing will remain of our heritage; soon I will no longer recognize my city. What is left of the city's traditional buildings and neighbourhoods must be preserved and it is important to begin this process now. Historic preservation has become popular all over the world in recent years, but many countries have chosen new construction over preservation. There is good reason for this. As the population has become larger, people want the usefulness of modern living. However, the built environment should be more than shiny new buildings with air conditioning and washing machines; it should also show the beauty of our culture and heritage. How can our children understand our culture if we erase so much of the physical evidence (物证) of it? The reasons for preserving historic buildings are not simply about an emotional connection to the past. There are also good economic reasons in favour of preservation. The repair and preservation of historic sites can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. There are several good examples of this in the Middle East. In Dubai, the historic AI Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local people, eager to learn about their city's past. Those who are against historic preservation think that it is too expensive. But many recent projects all over the world have told us that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation (翻新) of an existing building can cost about $40 per square metre less than even the most basic new building, while preserving the beauty of the original building. What is more, environmental experts believe that the greenest building is the one that is already built. New building almost always has a more serious environmental influence because it requires the use of allnew materials that must be transported, often over long distances, instead of recycled materials that are already on site. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too. 1.How does the author feel about his neighbourhood? A.Unsafe. B.Confused. C.Bored. To an extent, it rests in the copyists' intention—they are trying to fool you and knowingly missell their copy as an original, or they are openly presenting it as a replica (复制品). Adam Lowe—a trained artist in the copying business—has kept strictly to the wellintentioned camp. For a quarter of a century Lowe has spent his considerable energy producing highquality reproductions of paintings and sculptures for museums and galleries around the world. He describes his digital scanning technique as being closer to drawing than to photography, as four cameras are suspended above a painting's surface taking pictures from every perceived angle to create a single composite image. From this data a precise mould (模具) of the picture surface is made, with which the highresolution digital photograph is then printed. The Prado Museum in Madrid appointed Lowe's company, Factum Arte, to scan its collection of Black Paintings by Francisco de Goya. Lowe produced a highresolution closeup crop of the Spanish artist's famous The Dog, a framed copy of which you can buy in the museum's shop for about 990 euros. He has taken the idea of copying even further through his Spanish Gallery where “nothing is real”—from the decorated ceiling to the paintings hanging on the walls. He declares it his “greatest achievement”. Lowe sees his creations as the 21stcentury version of “cultural preservation” and thinks it ought to be funded by governments and universities. He has spoken to the mayor of Madrid about setting up a global arts center for cuttingedge digital technologies, but that ambition remains in the hands of the politicians. I went to visit Lowe at his artmaking HQ, located on the edge of Madrid. Topoftherange digital printers, complex cameras and virtual reality headsets dotted the 3Dprinted Greek sculptures. An army of computer scientists were busy with their works. As he sat down with a cool glass of early evening wine he seemed worn down by decades of skepticism. “People call us Factum, the factory of fakes,” he complained. “What we are doing is scientific recording to give accurate information about the artwork's surface that allows you to understand it better and more deeply.” 4.What is the primary purpose of Adam Lowe's work? A.To create exact fakes of famous artworks. B.To replace original artworks with replicas. C.To sell copies of masterpieces to private collectors. D.To produce highquality reproductions for museums. 根据第二段中的“For a quarter ... around the world. (25年来,Lowe花费了大量精力为世界各地的博物馆和画廊制作高质量的绘画和雕塑复制品。)”可知,Adam Lowe工作的主要目的是为博物馆制作高质量的复制品。故选D。 5.What's special about Lowe's technique? A.It uses a single camera to capture the entire image. B.It involves drawing each part of the painting by hand. C.It relies on computergenerated imageries to create the artwork. D.It uses multiple (多个的) cameras to take pictures from different angles. 根据第二段中的“He describes his ... a single composite image. (他将他的数字扫描技术描述为更接近绘画而不是摄影,因为四台相机悬挂在一幅画作表面上方,从各个可感知的角度拍照,以生成一个单一的合成图像。)”可知,Lowe的技术的特别之处是使用多台相机从不同角度拍摄照片。故选D。 6.How do people think of Lowe's work? A.They think his work is overpriced. B.They consider his replicas to be fakes. C.They believe his technique is outdated. D.They doubt the accuracy of his reproductions. 根据最后一段中Lowe说的话“People call us Factum, the factory of fakes (人们称我们Factum公司为赝品工厂)”可知,人们认为Lowe的作品是赝品。故选B。 7.What is the best title for the passage? A.The Innovative Technique of Adam Lowe B.The Debate over Fake Artworks in Museums C.The Challenges of Running a Copying Business D.Preserving Art Through HighQuality Reproductions 答案:D 解析:标题判断题。 Traditional tea processing techniques and social practices in China were added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List The project to deal with about 8 million objects will take five years. The reason for this is that the museum said in August that about 2,000 objects had been stolen or missing. The museum is one of the busiest in the world. It holds objects such as the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon Marbles—known as the Elgin Marbles and ancient stones and jewelry. The leader, or chair of the museum, is George Osborne. He recently told the Culture, Media and Sport Committee of Parliament that he believed a person who worked at the museum was responsible. Osborne called it “an inside job by someone who the museum had put trust in”. He said the person took objects from the museum little by little. The museum's manager at the time was German art historian Hartwig Fischer. Fischer left the job in August after serving since 2016. He said he must be responsible for the thefts in the end. He added the museum did not react as it should have when concerns first came up that someone had been stealing. The museum head said about 350 of the 2,000 objects have been found and are in the process of being returned. Stolen objects included gold rings, earrings and other jewelry from the ancient Greek and Roman times. The manager of the museum at present is Mark Jones. He said the museum is confident “that a theft of this kind can never happen again.” Jones added that one way to improve the museum's safety is to show more objects to the public instead of, as he said, “simply locking objects away.” In September, the museum asked for help in finding the missing objects. The organization offered a phone number for people to call if they had information. 1.Who stole the objects according to George Osborne? A.A visitor. B.An artist. C.An art dealer. D.A museum worker. D。 2.Why did Hartwig Fischer feel sorry about the missing objects? A.He shouldn't have trusted any worker. B.He didn't deal with the stealing in time. C.He did not notice objects were missing. D.He shouldn't have shown valuable objects. 根据第四段中的“He said he ... someone had been stealing.(他说他最终必须对这些盗窃负责。他补充说,当最初有人提出存在盗窃疑虑时,博物馆没有做出应有的反应。)”可知,Hartwig Fischer (哈特威格·费舍尔)对丢失的物品感到抱歉是因为他没有及时处理盗窃案。故选B。 3.What does Mark Jones want to do to protect their objects?
