There is, however, a more humble exercise that might not be so attractive, but has all the benefits—walking. Certified fitness professional Jolynn Jaekel explains, “What I love about walking is that anyone can do it at any age and any fitness level. Plus, it is good for your heart, your head and your wallet.” A recent report details the health benefits of walking. The report found that walking regularly to fulfill the 150 minutes of moderate physical exercise every week, recommended by the UK's chief medical officer, could save 37,000 lives each year. Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that quick walking reduces the risk of heart disease more effectively than running. They observed participants aged between 18 and 80 over a sixyear period and found that walking reduced the risk of heart disease by 9.3%, while running reduced it by 4.5%. And there is even more good news:30 minutes of quick walking over five days could help you sleep easily, according to research by Oregon State University. The study by the university showed that walking helped participants sleep better and feel more alert during the day. The sooner you get started, the sooner you'll notice the differences in your mind and body. So, go out for your 30minute walk in a nearby park or green space. 1.The underlined word “humble” in the first paragraph probably means “________”. I imagined that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections with it. Many people with weight problems also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cared for. We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there. But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally bring us happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love. It took me a long time to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Different cultures have different standards (标准) of beauty. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it's happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us struggle hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and care for ourselves. When we change our attitudes towards ourselves, the whole world changes. 5.What does the underlined word “everything” in Paragraph 2 mean? It is even more dangerous if you happen to be a blind climber, as Jesse Dufton is. The 34yearold was born with a rare genetic disease (遗传病) that left him with less than 20 percent of his vision (视觉), which then kept dropping over the years. He chooses to climb, because “it's better than sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself, right? Climbing is not the most dangerous thing I do on an average day; crossing the road on the way to work is far more risky than Hoy.” Dufton has been climbing mountains since childhood. As a skilled climber, his father would take him out at weekends. He was always physical then, always up for adventure. He played sports at school, though quickly grew frustrated (沮丧) with many of them. “Badminton was a joke for someone like me, and even blind cricket—with a ball with a bell in it—annoyed me.” Instead he was attracted to climbing and skiing, and insists that climbing is one of the safer activities for a blind person to undertake. “True, you can't see the handholds, or the footholds. You can't see where the opportunities are, or where to place your hands and your gear (设备), so you just have to take it slowly. You search around until you can feel for something to hold onto, and then basically repeat the process over and over again. To keep calm in these situations helps.” It was Jesse himself who made a documentary happen. He told the filmmaker Alistair Lee about his pastime, believing it might be worth capturing on film. “I realized my story was quite unusual,” he says, adding that he felt almost dutybound to share it. “If somebody like me watches it, and they find it inspirational, then it wouldn't be right for me to keep that from them, wouldn't it?” 9.What is more dangerous in Jesse Dufton's eyes? D.Staying at home all day. 根据第一段中的“crossing the road on the way to work is far more risky than Hoy”可知,Jesse Dufton认为在上班的路上过马路比攀登危险得多,即他的日常活动更危险。故选B。 10.What's the second paragraph mainly about? A.Dufton's passion for climbing. B.Skills needed for climbing. C.Father's influence on Dufton. D.The limited choice for disabled people. 根据第二段中的“Dufton has been climbing mountains since childhood.(Dufton从小就一直爬山。)” A。 11.Jesse persuaded Alistair Lee to make a documentary to ________. A.show his unique talent for climbing B.inspire more people with disability C.give credit to the brave climbers D.educate people about risky sports 答案:B 解析:细节理解题。 B。 12.From the story, we may infer Jesse Dufton is ________. A.responsible and helpful B.caring and careful C.patient and brave D.adventurous and optimistic 答案:D 解析:推理判断题。 D。 D My first goal: try not to look so scared. It sounds easy, but it actually took quite a few tries before I could relax from the mouth open, eyes wide expression that being on roller skates gave me. But not looking scared was something I knew I could achieve and helped me stick with the painfully embarrassing and exciting process of trying to learn to roller skate. I picked up roller skating at the end of 2021. I have thrown myself into this hobby wholeheartedly, in a way that surprises me sometimes. It feels a lot like love. That said, it did take me a while to get comfortable on skates, and as an adult, I'm not used to feeling that awkward in my body. I got really familiar with picking myself off the floor. I skated a few times as a kid, but never enough to get good. So starting as a grownup, with grownup knees, I was very careful. I signed up for online classes. In skate class, they taught me to wear protective gear (用具), to clap when someone falls, and to encourage them. Falling means you're trying, and everyone falls in skating. That possible danger almost makes it more fun, the little thrill of possibility that you might fall, a likelihood when you first start out that gradually decreases the more you practice—but never to zero. After I've been skating for almost a year, I don't look so scared on wheels anymore. I've made a lot of progress. The other day I joyfully skated past an older woman on the rink and she said, almost under her breath, “My goal is to skate like you.” I tried to contain my pride. “Keep at it!” I yelled over my shoulder. A few minutes later, I tripped,__fell, quickly picked myself up, and then kept at it. 13.How did the author feel when she roller skated at first? A.Surprised. B.Confident. C.Scared. D.Relaxed. 根据第一段中的“My first goal: try not to look so scared.” C。 14.What makes roller skating feel like love? A.You get familiar with it. B.It takes a while to get comfortable. C.It makes you feel awkward. D.You throw yourself into it wholeheartedly. 根据第二段中的“I have thrown myself ... It feels a lot like love.” D。 15.What did the author learn from skate class? A.Encourage people when they fall. B.Keep practicing and you will not fall. C.Falling makes people make fun of you. D.Be careful before you sign up for any classes. 根据第三段中的“In skate class ... and to encourage them.” A。 16.Which of the following can replace “tripped” in the last paragraph? A.Made a trip. B.Moved fast. C.Lost my balance. D.Kept skating. 根据画线词后文“fell, quickly picked myself up, and then kept at it(摔倒了,很快爬起来,然后继续坚持)”可推知,作者先失去了平衡,然后摔倒了。 My grandfather and parents all showed us the value of hard work. I think it is not only a sport but also an art, because it is a game that needs strength and skill. Some people think that playing table tennis needs little strength, but I don't think so. When playing table tennis, we should judge the direction of the ball, and hit it back with great strength so that we can win the game. So after one game you will be very tired if you have tried your best. However, as a sport, I think it more like an art. In the game, you can often find the ball moving quickly, and the players' movements are very beautiful. Though I can't play table tennis very well, I show great interest in it. I think playing table tennis can build up our bodies, keep us healthy and train our brains.
