A As for long-distance travel, there are some wonderful destinations that actually offer you great value for your money, especially for those who do not hope to empty their pockets after a holiday. Tokyo, Japan Food lovers should go to this busy city which has the lowest cost of eating out — you can even buy two evening meals (three dishes for each), with a bottle of wine, for just under £34. For sightseeing there are plenty of free museums and attractions, while tour bus ticket prices start from as little as £11.56. Bangkok, Thailand Thailand’s capital is second to none as the best value long-distance city. Although there isn’t a big difference in all prices compared to the other cities, it is accommodation that really makes it stand out. If you’re only stopping for a long weekend, then be sure to pay a visit to the breathtaking temples. Beijing, China The Chinese capital stands out with the total price of £337.49. If you only have one cultural day out during your stay, make it a trip to the Forbidden City. There are some beautiful buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. At the same time they’re home to priceless artificial objects from ancient Chinese emperors’ families. Dubai, UAE Although Dubai does have a reputation for being quite the splurge (挥霍) when it comes to holidays and if you’re going to enjoy shopping or experience the roller-coasters, it is in fact quite worth the money. The city also offers some cheaper prices across its museums, galleries and attractions as well as airport transfers. 1. What can you enjoy in Tokyo, Japan? A. Free bus rides. B. Eating out cheap. C. Visiting galleries free. D. Priceless man-made objects. 2. Which one tops the list of the best value long-distance cities? A. Tokyo. B. Bangkok. C. Beijing. D. Dubai. 3. What is people’s common idea about Dubai? A. Dubai is not a good place for shopping. B. Historical buildings spread everywhere in Dubai. C. Being on vacation in Dubai costs tons of money. D. The roller-coasters there are the best in the world. B The moment I stepped into the Marrakech souk (露天市场) in Morocco, I was swallowed by a world of strong smells and sounds. The air was full of the smell of spices (香料) and food. My ears were filled with a constant soundtrack of shopkeepers’ calls, customer bargaining, and the distant sound of traditional music. The streets were lined with shops that sell everything from colorful lamps to beautiful carpets. It was fascinating and overwhelming. My plan was simple: follow the main path, do some sightseeing, and return to my hotel before sunset. However, the souk is a designed maze. Drawn by a unique blue door, I turned down a narrow path, then another, and soon, I was completely lost. Every corner looked the same. The once fascinating noises now felt confusing. I tried to ask for directions, but my limited French and the locals’ rapid Arabic meant I couldn’t make myself understood. A sense of panic began to rise inside me. Just as I was considering giving up and sitting in a corner, an elderly shopkeeper who was sitting in front of his carpet store noticed my confused look. He gestured for me to come over. Instead of giving me complex directions, he offered me a cup of mint (薄荷) tea. Using simple words, hand gestures, and by drawing a rough map on a piece of paper, he patiently showed me the way. Following his guidance, I finally saw the familiar main square. This experience has taught me that getting lost isn’t always a bad thing. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and led to a genuine connection with a local. The kindness of that old man is the most valuable memory I have brought back from Morocco. Sometimes, the wrong turn can lead to the most right moment. 4. Which of the following best shows the author’s first feeling in the souk? A. Bored and disappointed. B. Fascinated yet overwhelmed. C. Frightened but curious. D. Relaxed and at home. 5 What caused the author to get lost? A. He was attracted by a blue door and left the main path. B. He was purposely misled by a local shopkeeper. C. He followed a tour group who suddenly changed routes. D. He was too busy bargaining for a carpet. 6. How did the old shopkeeper help the author? A. He drew a simple map and used gestures. B. He sold him a detailed tourist map. C. He called an English-speaking guide. D. He walked the author back to the hotel. 7. What can be learned from the author’s story? A. Always buy a souvenir to remember a trip. B. Stay on the main path to avoid any trouble. C. Getting lost may bring unexpected kindness. D. Tea culture is the highlight of Morocco. C While picking up a new language is challenging at any age, however, it seems to be especially difficult to master a foreign tongue as we age. When we are growing up, we are building a language system in our mind, which allows us to communicate freely. If we start a new language after youth, however, we are adding a new set of rules to our mind. That is why we find it difficult to learn a new language — we’re building a new speech system when we are not young any more. Why is it easier for kids to learn a new language? Children are relatively more active, open-minded and their language system is not fixed, meaning it is less work for them to pick up new things. The good news is that learning a language isn’t really that hard if you’re opening your mind. But it does take hard work and motivation(动力) to achieve your goals. It’s important to remember what you’re actually learning is how to communicate in a new way with other human beings. If you often share your daily experience with others in that language, what you’re learning is related to you. For example, if I’m learning Italian, I would never remember how to say “Dov’è la biblioteca?” or “Where is the library?” but I will always remember how to say “Ti piace il caffè?” or “Do you like some coffee?” In addition, TV shows, films and video games in foreign languages are all great forms of entertainment (娱乐) for learning a new language. Anything that relates you to the language and culture is great, so long as you find it enjoyable. Adding a single new word to your vocabulary can be interesting and rewarding. The road to fluency can be hard, but the view along the way is really amazing, so it’s OK if you are driving slowly. 8. What affects language learning according to the first two paragraphs? A. Money. B. Sex C. Age. D. Work. 9. What can we infer about language learning from paragraph 2? A. Adults can pick up new things quickly. B. Children can do better than adults in language learning. C. Adults find the new rules easy to remember. D. Children have a fixed language system. 10 What is helpful for learning a language according to paragraphs 4 and 5? A. Taking down its rules. B. Playing video games. C. Going to the library. D. Using it in daily life. 11. What may be the best title for the passage? A. Is It too Late to Master a Foreign Language? B. Language Learning: Chance or Challenge? C. Why do Children Learn Faster Than Adults? D. How to Build up Your Vocabulary? D The Yellow River is the cradle where China’s civilization first came into being. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin. The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Instruments set up along the river collect and transfer information to the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions. One big breakthrough in the river’s digital management is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River in Henan Province, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped instrument with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said. “In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao, an official from the Information Center of Yellow River in Henan Province. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.” And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert monitors of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪),” said Shen. Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river. 12. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River? A. To conduct historical research. B. To create a virtual tourist attraction. C. To raise public awareness of river protection. D. To improve flood control and prevention efforts. 13. How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance? A. They record water quality. B. They improve the river’s beauty. C. They monitor and report dike movements. D. They serve as markers for important locations. 14. What does the underlined word “comprehensive” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Complete. B. Basic. C. Beautiful. D. Natural. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. The digital twin of the Yellow River. B. The drones have an important influence on flood prevention. C. How to control and prevent flood of the Yellow River. D. How to make the people living along the Yellow River richer. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you are someone who struggles with exam anxiety, know that you aren’t alone.
